Any of you science nuts heard about micro cavity plasma displays? I'm trying to find more info on it. Let me know if you've read anything. It is not the same as the plasma tube tech you've heard about. On that subject, I'm not sure Shinoda is going to go far with plasma tube tech but it is interesting for signage and other applications.

Now I remember. This micro-cavity plasma design I first layed eyes on in the "future looks bright" white paper by display search (see Figure 11)

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/consumer_electronics/whitepapers/Future_Looks_Bright_for_Plasma_TVs.pdf

Looks like they have made good progress. Some designs even incorporate an SED type approach it seems.

I say "bring it on"! You can't have too many technologies to choose from. If it can be better than current display tech (PDP, LCD which disappoint me) I am all for it.

Could Auditor 55 handle a display that was a cross between plasma and SED?

I don't think so--I believe he worships at the altar of SED 100% purity!

I agree with the first part of this, however I do find that the best plasmas and LCD's today are excellent.

How can the TV's of today disappoint anyone? They are better than yesterdays TV's and definitely better than those before them. Can they improve? sure and they have been, but learn to enjoy what's available today rather than always wanting what's not yet available.

Todays TVs--even the best Kuros are not better than the best Direct-view CRT monitors when it comes to blacks and shadow detail.

Not really. A *good* big DV CRT has better blacks than both PDP and LCD. They have no plasma dither, or LCD off-axis problems either. They view well in lit rooms and have smooth color reproduction. Yes the geometry and blooming can be a bit of a problem on a CRT in some cases but still the picture quality was better than many of today's fixed pixel sets.

It just seems like we keep trading one flaw for a different one. So that is why I say NEXT! try again, better luck next time. Micro-cavity plasma? Ok, I will give it a look, it does sound promising. I hope something becomes of it and it doesn't end up like SED.

Never Give Up On SED/Micro Cavity Plasma Displays!

Seriously, bring it on. My 2005 Plasma can't last forever, and I'm still not a fan of the LCD picture quality, in spite of the fact that they are improving enough to at least consider if I ever need to buy before this new technology get's produced at an affordible price. (less expensive than a car).

and do you want to go back to viewing sub 40" sets again? Not me. Before HD came along I had a top of the line 31" Mitsubishi CRT and then went to a 51" Pioneer Elite RPTV. There was no comparison to the viewing experience just because of size along and the picture was pretty fantastic also. It appears you concentrate on the flaws while I concentrate on the positives a TV provides as today's flat panels at sizes form 50" to 65" are far better for watching movies and sporting events than any CRT in my opinion.

and what size were those TV's? Is that what you want to go back to? Not me.

Every display technology has advantages and disadvantages in comparison with the other technologies. Of the currently available ones, I prefer the plasma. If the local-dimming LED-lit LCDs could fix the off-axis viewing problem, then I might change my mind.

No I don't want to go back to the size of direct view CRTS--I do want to go back to their black level and shadow detail performance.

I can honestly say that BOTH LCD and Plasma SUCK in that one picture parameter.

Plasma fans shouldn't be satisfied until KUROs look like crap compared to all other plasmas--then we will be getting somewhere when it comes to picture quality.

We need SED for uncompromised, no holds barred, picture quality excellence. SED, four years ago, surpassed regular CRT in all areas. I say regular CRT, because I like to consider SED as flat panel CRT.

I wish audio mfgs could cure the off axis surround sound problem as well.
