Do you think that as the chips get faster the processing for the upscalers will get better? or are they at the best they will get now?

For deinterlacing and scaling I suspect it is a matter of knowing how to do it; additional power not required. There may be enhancement techniques that require fast processors, but so far these have not been well reviewed for producing natural looking images. So again, perhaps it is a matter of knowing how.

I would be surprised if anyone can get much more out of 720x480 SD-DVD than we are seeing now.

What are some of the newer ones doing to improve on the models before? Adding any new features or anything?

You could look at some product web sites and judge for yourself.

Why do they need to do anything new? DVD is a pretty mature technology.

I think typically they're throwing in the extra mediacenter/htpc type features like divx/xvid/mp3 and usb drives.

I had one of the first or 2nd gen jvc dvd player with divx, whatever codec they had for that was so-so but not great. Just rewatched on my new oppo 980 and can tell the divx chip had remarkable improvement. Not as drastic an update for the dvd playback.
