Hi Everyone,
I just plugged in a Motorola DCH6416, and I was getting analog out to my monitor. I was also searching for a code that would allow my Sony RMAV-3000 to control the 6414. After finding a code that worked I was moving through the 19 various menu items to find out what they did and what they would allow me to control, for example testing the internal hard drive. As I marched down the list of items, I selected one that caused the 6416 to flash off and then power up, then display 8888 on the numeric display on the front of the device. I also lost all video output, component, S-video and RF out. It also stopped responding to the remote.

By holding the "menu" button on the unit, I can get it display "boot" and then using the either the channel buttons, or the arrow buttons get the display to shift to "Subd", or "Enet" or "displ" but nothing seems to happen. Any suggestions, or method to force a reset?

All I want to do is use the unit to tune in digital off air broadcast, and to record same. I live in an area where cable is not available.

I don't understand if you are using a Motorola DCH (digtal channel) 6416 cable box which only receives QAM protocol digital channels form a cable company why you think it can also receive digital OTA 8VSB channels if connected to an antenna.

Good question. There was no mention in the product spec that suggested the DCH 6416 would not accept OTA digital signals. Because it was passing through OTA analog, I felt it was worth taking the next few steps to see if I could get to right menu selection to program the channel selection. Which is where I apparently upset the functionality of the unit.

With that said, does your question imply that I am wasting my time, even if I did get the unit to properly boot? Regardless, I would still like to get the unit back to its original configuration.

Yes I think you are wasting your time. Your cable provider obtains OTA 8vsb digital signals from your local broadcatsers and converts them to QAM digital for output to your DCH 6416 you think they are analog since they have the have the analog channel numbers in their guide which are just an alias for the true QAM channel number.

Thank you for your thoughts. Actually I was connected to rooftop antenna. I don't have cable in my area at all. My hope was to be able to use the device to record OTA broadcasts. When the device displayed two channels that were (3, 5 on the VHF band.) that when I started looking for a programming method for the digital channels. Does your opinion change?

I think that the cable from your STB is just picking up the 2 OTA analog channels due to the quality of the shielding in the box and on the cable. This is a fairly common occurance.
