I've read all the previous articles found here I could but I still have a question...

I'm trying to get sound using the DVI to HDMI (PC to TV) but the computer and TV manuals confuse me (more so than usual). :) I'm getting sound on the computer but not the TV.

I have an XPS 400 PC and a 40 inch Dynex LCD. I'm gathering optical SPDIF would be best but the TV manual states "SPDIF jack works with digital TV channels only" which won't serve much of a purpose since the objective is computer to HDMI Input.

Would the only other work around be the regular red and white RCA jacks, and if so where would these go as I have no red and white color scheme on the back of the computer.

I know some of this may be repetitive but some of this is confusing to me. I thought I was all set today with the arrival of the DVI to HDMI cable and then no sound. Wonderful.

Thanks!

You won't get audio with that type of cable...(DVI-HDMI) you would need optical or red/white RCA audio to get sound.

Is optical the same as S/PDIF?

Thanks

yes. what is spdif? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spdif).

are you sure the manual is referring to the "spdif in" and not the "spdif out"?

re: "red/white"... just make sure you are connecting "left to left" and "right to right"... none of the equipment knows about the color of the jacket or connector on the cable... ;)

as far as help with the pc output, check the htpc threads... they'll be able to point you in the correct direction...

Ok, I bought the Red and White audio cables from Monoprice and bought the 3.5 mm jack. Now, here's where I am having problems...

I have tried the r/w to the TV's "out" and get some sound but very low. I've tried the "in" and get nothing at all. I would think it needs to go to the "in" but again I get nothing.

The 3.5 mm is hooked into the green on the computer which my manual says is for "line-out/ headphone. Manual states "use the green line out connector to attach headphones and most speakers with integrated amplifiers."

I get plenty of sound using headphones but I don't want to use headphones when watching TV.

Can anyone help? If this keeps up I just may have to go back to VGA to VGA cause at least that had sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which input are you plugged into on the TV? Will it accept analog audio when viewing an HDMI input? It may not. Usually TVs with this capability will have a DVI input and then an ancillar audio input, often 3.5 mm stereo that goes with the DVI input, for PC sources. Unless there is an analog input that matches an HDMI input (unlikely) you'll probably have to run analog video and audio to that input instead.

Most TVs accept HDMI from the DVI source through the HDMI port 1 if you have two or three ports look for the first one to have the HDMI to go through then look adjacent to the HDMI 1 input there will be either a 3.5 or S/PDIF input.

Hope that helps.
