I just switched to the 8300HDC and I connected my external hard drive. I was asked to format it and when I go to diagnostics- I see both hard drives (internal/external). However, on my "List"- the new capacity indicator shows for example 50% full when I have only about 10 hours of HD recording. Is the indicator wrong? Should I ignore?
THanks.

I am having something similar. On the Scientific Atlanta 8300HDC, it is showing both the internal and external hard drive, plus shows the model and temperature of the drive (press Vol+ and Info buttons on the base unit at the same time), so it's reading the drive, and I did see a prompt to format, etc., but nonetheless, the drive capacity is not not included, and the drive is not getting used.
I noticed that the Western Digital DVR expander web site mentions specifically that the 8300HDC unit is not supported:
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2516&p_created=1211992029&p_sid=fCU3gACj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ 9MSwxJnBfcHJvZHM9MjA4LDIyNiZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9Mi4yMjYmcF9jdj0 mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD04MzAwSERD&p_li=&p_topview=1
So it may be that the setup I have, which is a 500GB WDC drive in a Vantec case, is too close, or perhaps that the 8300HDC with certain firmware levels plain doesn't work.

which is on essentially IOmega DVR expander also not working on 8300HDCs.

I should also note, for completeness (albeit probably too late to help the original append), that the 8300HDC had a LOT of problems trying initially to recognize the drive, and formatting it, caused reboots and various other problems. Firmware level appears to be:
ODN Version 3.1.1_sp1 2009/03/10 13:51
TWC NY (Poughkeepsie)
I will probably try to work my way through the forum some more, but it's looking like I may need to call TWC, see if they "support" anything external on the "newer" 8300HDC units.
