So far...

Positives:
* The Tom character, played by Aziz Ansari. (Yes, I had to look that up.)
* Leslie Knope falling in the pit.

Negatives:
* Everything else.

I will give it one or two more weeks, since I like the stuff Amy Poehler has done in the past.

I was disappointed with the premiere. Amy Poehler is trying to be the female Michael Scott but only half pulls it off. The supporting cast is weak (even Rashida Jones, Karen from The Office, was uninteresting), and you can't relate to most of the situations. That's what makes The Office funny; you can relate to a sexual harassment seminar at your office (for example).

I'm going to watch a few more episodes and hope it gets better, but this wasn't a good start.

And Hollywood writers get paid to come up with this stuff and they actually think it's funny. There was not one funny or even slightly humorous moment in that show. A complete waste of time and shows how little talent there really is in Hollywood.

I kinda like SNL. Some sketches are painful of course but I like Kristen Wiig a lot. She's hot and funny in my opinion, but Amy Poehler not sooo much. But I agree I don't see how there is a team of writers and that's the best they can come up with after a huge brainstorm.

Wow, some harsh critics on this one. I didn't think it was that bad. I'll definitely watch the next episode to see how it goes. There were some things that were blatantly from The Office and, as much as I love that show, they should try and be different.

I don't see how someone couldn't find at least ONE thing to laugh at during this entire episode.

I'm up for watching at least the second episode this evening, even after not finding the first episode all that funny. But, being a City Planner, I appreciate at least someone on T.V. representing our profession even if it is only satire. Being a City Planner in a small town is not really all that much fun so at least the character playing the role is close to real life!

I do not think the main character is a Mike Scott clone. Scott is the Ultimate Gladhander whereas the Parks & Rec lady is a True Believer. Mike wants you to like him. Leslie Knope knows you love her, but you are afraid to admit it, but someday you will.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it took me about 3 episodes before The Office clicked with me. I needed some familiarity with the characters, and I disagree with scowl, I think there's potential for the characters on this show. Quite frankly, there's not a lot to choose from when it comes to sitcoms on Network TV. I'm more than happy to give this show a chance.

Watched the pilot last night - hated the show. Killed the series recording and deleted episode #2 w/o watching. Felt/Feel the same way about The Office. Not funny, not realistic, not well acted. The BBC version of The Office was classic British dry humor that only Ricky Gervais could pull off. These American knockoffs are just awful.

i'm really liking this show...Tom (Aziz Ansari) was intern Ed on Scrubs and was hysterical...i find him just as funny on P & R and am really liking the show. everyone needs to remember that The Office didn't really pick up steam until season 2 and it took 30 Rock ~6 episodes to find itself...the turning point for me was season 1, ep 6, "Jack Meets Dennis"...still my fav 30 Rock ep of all time (sans the Josh + Liz Taylor storyline).

I don't want to say it "sucks". To be fair I only watched it once and it might have been an early one. There are folks I see in the cast that I've liked on other shows, so I should probably give it another try. I hate it when fans of the show creep into threads on other shows to tell you how "superior" it is. Kinda like when Scrubs fans used to post in Arrested Development threads. Just don't understand being so much a fan boy to tear down other shows to build the one you love up. And the fact is not everyone is going to like every TV show and I can understand not everyone can/will be patient with every show. I see enough with P&R that I'm willing to invest the time and I've enjoyed every ep I've seen.

I think P & R will surivive. It is doing OK in the ratings with 5 million+ viewers and leads in 18-34 demo for the timeslot. Its ratings aren't very far behind 30 Rock, which has a much stronger lead in (The Office). I think the show is moderately entertaining, I thought the dog poop fight was funny. But, what do I know, I also like "Earl". The funniest sitcom episode of the season for me was the 4/23 episode of Earl, "the bully" episode. I LOL numerous times during it. I DVR all 4 NBC shows on Thursday.

I think The Office is as funny as its ever been, I look forward to it each week. Also, count me in on the camp that likes Parks. It's starting to really grow on me, I've liked each episode better than the last. Her Indian co-worker is a trip.

A couple of moments that made me laugh:
- her boyfriend "running" down the street on crutches - naked
- her over-reaction to her own rule-breaking, sending e-mails to the whole city government confessing
- the fight in the park with the teenagers - what was that stuff anyway, dog poop?
- the house cleaning efforts. I thought he was a nice guy, but really just looking for a sure fire way to get some action

Like The Office, the show should get even better as the characters get more depth.

My wife watches this show and will probably watch it all the way to a bitter end. I end up seeing eps when she watches it, and I have to say, Aziz Ansari is the funniest part of the show. Combine that with Human Giant and his minor but hysterical role in Observe & Report, it's about time people learn his name and associate his face with his name:

Yeah, dog owners will "bag" Fido's droppings and that's what the gangs had pilfered from the trash cans. It killed me how Amy's character got at flinging them so quickly.

On a sidenote, I've heard folks refer to the droppings as 30 Rocks. :D

Decent episode this week. Finding out she was on a date with the old guy was amusing. Her coworker Tom was funny as usual:
"Hey, I had a friend that went to that school, when did you graduate"?
"1968"
"Well, he was 2005, so I'm guessing you missed each other"
and, "This is my wife, isn't she hot? She's a surgeon so she makes a lot of money, too"

But I think the funniest scene of the series so far was the opening scene where they cut Andy's cast off and it was like under a sofa cushion - loose change, chip bags and an Ipod.

As I said before, the funniest lines go to Aziz Ansari week in and week out. Either that, or it's his delivery of the lines.

What a shame this nightmare got a second season while "My Name Is Earl" is gone.

This show didn't even deserve a first season and if Amy Poehler wasn't who she is, this disaster would have never been greenlit.

And of course, as always, Aziz Ansari has the best lines like the gay cowboy line and reference to another bar, "Pitchers & Catchers."

We watched the show last night but aside from some individual moments, it felt like an SNL skit that loses itself after a few minutes and then goes on for what seems an eternity. Amy Pohler is always good but the snarky character that she plays need better lines. If you saw her in Hamlet II as the ACLU attorney, you know what I mean.

Probably everybody who finds the show objectionable has stopped even following the threads, but last night's episode was particularly funny. The show seems to have re-evaluated a lot of things since last year and moving in a different sort of direction, with lots more character development of the rest of the cast, and lots less about urban development of the pit.

It's one show I really look forward to.

I actually enjoyed this episode. Rashida Jones as the bad date was very amusing. And the embarrasing tidbit competition was cute. Would love to know how the intern ended up riding a lawnmower through Nordstroms. Definately need to see more of her character.

Was thinking that we had a continuity glitch with Tom. Last week they had him giving copies of his house key to any attractive woman he meets. This week we find out he's married. But then it is revealed to be a fake marriage, so I guess they don't live together.

They actually revealed that last season. My reaction then was "why is he on the make when he has such a hot wife?" much as was Ron's rating decision. Now all is revealed.

Glad Amy is allowing the center of attention to shift towards others. She has always been a little ham, but has always allowed others to shine as well. It can only help the show.

I don't particularly have any issues with Amy. For me, she's like Micheal Scott in the office I prefere to see her character in shorter, funnier bits and see more of the fantastic supporting cast getting their chance to shine. When the balance goes too far to Amy's character, it isn't as funny.

They are on at different times so it is not that complicated to watch one or the other or record one or the other or record both or watch both. Then again why do you even bother with the Office since you say it stinks like many other shows you say do but still always watch!

For me it's not matter of both my tuners being occupied at the time but rather too many things I want during the winter and having my Tivo HDD fill up. While I have far less time for TV in the summer I record very little, so a new Office would be a welcome and not a burden. TV on DVD is also a great idea but with a Tivo commercials are quite easy to skip and also TV would be HD while DVD would be SD, unless the Office is available on BR.

Something really changed between the writing of last year's show and this year's, and lots of people may not have checked it out this year. Plus, though each show is pretty self-contained, there is a definite sequence to the gags requiring keeping up with past shows.

Ditto better than 30 Rock, though the last couple of their episodes have been an improvement on what has gone on before. Lorne has a long track record of letting things go off the rails on his shows and then whipping things back into shape.

Yes, it was, and pretty funny at that. You may want to check your On-Demand for NBC. I have FIOS and am able to watch several popular prime time shows, including P&R, in HD for free when my DVR has a conflict. Thurs is a busy night.

One of the funniest shows of the season. It is really packed with hilarious lines throughout and you have to stay on top of your toes to catch them all. This show kills me.

Leslie : Ron wake up! Are you having a nightmare?
Ron: No, I have a habit of sleep fighting

Great show. Most underrated on TV. LoL many times. Agree about Ron Swanson, love that smirk he uses but then how serious he got when told they were laying-off Leslie which would mean him doing some work. The whole Andy-April bit is hilarious, can't wait for next season.

I watched the last two episodes of this season only because Adam Scott of Party Down joined the cast. After viewing these two episodes I will say I don't find this show all that humorous, no where near as funny as Party Down (imo), but I did chuckle a few times and as long as Adam is with the show I will continue to watch. Perhaps I will come to enjoy the Parks & Rec as much as you all.

Finally got around to watching the last few eps of the Thursday night lineup

i really don't understand the viewing audience. both community and the office have higher ratings than parks and rec if my info is correct. yet there it sits sandwiched between the 2. how can people watch these 2 and then skip the show that is the best of the 3.

Why anyone would switch to something else on Thurs. night is beyond me. I do know this show has had sand kicked in it's face, completely unjustifiably. There were a lot of times when it would be the funniest show that evening.

Parks and Rec is infinitely more funny to me than the Office. But I'm going to assume that many people interested in Parks and Rec tuned in for its initial 6 ep run a year ago and were as completely turned off by it as I was. I gave it two episodes to sway me in this latest season and found myself pleasantly surprised at how much improved it was.

I believe Parks and Rec is gone until mid-season, because NBC thinks Americans want to watch a comedy about people that were given jobs previously held by Americans...in this economy. And they say NBC are stupid?!

Not exactly. In the fall 30 Rock moves to 8:30pm and Outsourced at 9:30pm. No matter what I suspect Outsourced won't last (even if it's good), although it's based on a movie which isn't half bad (but most people have never heard of it, but you can get it on Netflix).

And then Parks & Rec will be back, maybe at 9:30, or maybe back at 8:30.

Well I'm very disappointed to hear this.

I loved nbc's thursday night lineup from last year. Sounds like
they're breaking and splintering it apart to try and shore up
all the other garbage they program. Don't think this will help
nbc's ratings, and certainly won't enhance these great 3 thursday
night comedies.

Parks and Rec may not surivive this insult.

Considering that now CBS is going go with comedy from 8-9pm this fall (8pm: Big Bang Theory, 8:30pm, Sh** my dad says), CBS is poised to hurt Community's 8pm audience, but with 30 Rock at 8:30pm, it's a formidable ratings competitor to the new CBS show (Which i don't think will do great).

And then with 9:30pm, NBC wants to pump up a new show that could benefit from a post-Office time slot. I personally can't blame them, but turning an existing show into a mid-season replacement is never a good thing.

no wonder nbc has the worst ratings of any network. they have a gold
lineup on thursdays and they're going to mess around with it and probably have
worse ratings than they did last season.

and what does a mid-season replacement mean in terms of time

are we looking at november or february.

can't believe they're pulling this show just as it hits its prime

For mid-season replacements, I assume we are looking at two scenarios:

1.) Parks and Rec takes over a show that gets canned early (maybe Outsourced, or even a show not on Thursdays).

or

2.) Parks and Rec has new episodes shown when the network is usually showing repeats or puts in a hiatus for a show. That would be the more typical Jan/Feb debut.

The thing is, before the announcement came that Parks and Rec would be a mid-season replacement, the producers thought the show was going to be on in the fall and in light of Poehler's pregnancy, they scrambled to film episodes for next season (not sure how many). So once a spot opens up, they'll be ready to start airing new Parks and Rec in the fall/winter.

Read back through this thread. The baby is not the reason. In fact before NBC announced the fall lineup, they rushed to film a bunch of next season's eps prior to Amy giving birth.

Once NBC announced that P&R would be a mid season replacement this season, that rush was a total waste (Except that there are eps in the can so if a mid-season replacement is quickly needed, the eps will be avail)

pappy97
08-09-10, 10:57 AM
All it takes is pretty much any new show to be canned on NBC could allow P&R to run eps, doesn't have to be "Outsourced."

I don't hope "Outsourced" fails, it could be good. As I said before, the show is inspired by a movie of the same name which isn't half bad. Usually I wouldn't expect NBC to greenlight a show that on its surface may only appeal to Indo-Americans/South Asians, but I suspect NBC moved it along because the huge anti-outsourcing culture here in the US (Especially with call centers to India), that perhaps NBC thinks the masses can appreciate the humor that will come from the show.
