Why were they driving through that area and what caused him to get hit?
Not sure why they were driving there but someone threw a bottle at their car, that's why they stopped and got out.

I saw the bottle, but why did he get hit with a baseball bat. I don't recall any arguments or anything to instigate the assault. It looked like the officers were walking away.

Just gang members being gang members I guess since they busted one them for the murder.
Nate's definitely dead.

Apparently this happen to a real police officer and was why there was an in memory of panel at the end of the show.
Young C 01-26-11, 02:56 PM I think he's dead.
Yup. :(

For sure.
Man.. last night was so sad. Wonder how the moral at the station will be like next week.
I agree that this week's show was very strong, especially the emotionally charged final scene. Both Sammy and the dead cop's widow are so fragile right now, I will be surprised if a relationship between them doesn't develop.
Young C 01-26-11, 04:47 PM Good point, gwsat. A relationship might spark between them.
Nice to see you still posting. :D

Also of note was that the "witness" was on the lawn watching the whole thing happen.

Wow! Was she? I'll have to re-watch. That explains why she didn't want to ID anyone.
StormCrow 01-27-11, 08:18 AM Wow! The final 10 minutes felt so real.
Not to say the rest of the ep wasn't. But I felt that the officer down sequence and then the closing hospital scene were top shelf by all involved.
For me, the movie: 'To Live and Die in L.A.' comes to mind when this scenario plays out. It happens rarely, but there is such an impact when a character who we have come to know, is killed.
This is one of the few current shows that I actually look forward to watching.

Southland seems to have broad appeal. For example, at the request of my grandson, a college student, I have been saving Southland episodes for him so he can watch them when he comes to my house. So far this season, he is only one episode behind.
I saw the bottle, but why did he get hit with a baseball bat. I don't recall any arguments or anything to instigate the assault. It looked like the officers were walking away.
The "White Hoody Gang" (I forget their real name) knew that the cops knew members form their gang killed that father. It was all elaborate ritual, like a mating dance or something. When the bottle was thrown, the remark "I , can't let that pass", was uttered. It was a strange give & take. If you ever go to S Korea & see the students riot on a Sunday then you will know what i mean.
What was really eerie about that scene was, the gang did not make a sound after the baseball bat hit. Even after having a gang member shot point blank & several shots fired, they kept approaching like zombies. It was very eerie.
Wow! Was she? I'll have to re-watch. That explains why she didn't want to ID anyone.
When they approached her the first time, she admitted that everyone knows what happens to those that rat on (the name of that White Hoody gang)
The intensity on this show is outstanding. That final scene where Nate gets killed was off the charts. The interaction between the characters and the development of the main characters, to me, is what makes the show so watchable. Sammy is trying to get his *hit together and Nate is giving him some ground to work his life out. And Cooper is all over Sherman to NOT make mistakes...because he might get someone killed in the future...and who gets it....Nate! I thought something would happen in the near future with Sammy and Nate only because of the coming attractions a few weeks ago where Sammy had blood on him...but man, that was intense.
I honestly didn't notice the girl standing on the lawn...if only because I thought she had given a witness statement and fingered the shooters when she came in with her brother the priest. Guess I'll have to re-watch that final (intense...can I say that enough) scene.
I was only hoping that Sammy had a sub machine gun on him and would take out ALL of those animals....
I love this show
jazzbass 01-27-11, 11:29 AM Yep, this show is great. This is the only cop show on right now that me and my fellow officers like and watch. We love The First 48 of course but this show is almost as real as what we actually do. It might be even closer than I think as I'm not a cop in LA and can't comment on their day to day lives. I hope this show continues on for many years.
Finally watched this week's episode and can't really add much over what's been said already, very intense final sequence, probably the most powerful scenes I've seen this TV season. The comment about To Live and Die in LA was right on the mark, the same type of emotional blow to the gut as when Chance was killed even though Nate was confirmed dead in a later scene. Quality TV, hope it has some staying power.
steverobertson 01-28-11, 07:04 AM This has become one of my favorite shows
MacAlert 02-01-11, 09:41 PM They need to get rid of Ochoa.
They need to get rid of Ochoa.
I continue to love Southland, although I agree the hard charging Ochoa can be hard to take. She reminds me of a guy who I used to work with who had a hyper-aggressive personality, coupled with remarkably bad judgment. A coworker of ours, a close friend, once said the guy's trouble was that "He's all thrust but no rudder.":)
I dig this show for its ability to be dramatic...yet funny at the same time. The scene where Cooper and Sherman show up at the Child Abuse household...with the exchange between the kid and Cooper was hysterical.
At the same time I could see Cooper's feelings building up to the ending where he was to confront his father. It almost felt like he had to keep that little kid whose parents left him at arms length..because of the internal tension Cooper was feeling between his ailing back, having to go speak AGAINST his father to keep him in prison and his pill usage/dependency. (at least that's how I took it)
And then when he arrested the guy for driving the van under the influence of pain killers---part of me wondered if he did it so he could get access to the guys pills and part of me wondered if he did it because he knew how wrong it was.
This show consistently keeps me entertained and riveted.
Can't WAIT to see if Sammy goes loco next week.....

Haven't seen this week's episode yet but look forward to doing so. I think that Southland is by far the best police procedural on TV right now and one of the best shows of any kind. It is my college student grandson's favorite show, too. You are right, though, even with much of the profanity bleeped out, Southland is gritty and is certainly inappropriate for children.
petesimac 02-09-11, 06:31 PM I think it's clear who sent those pictures in...he needed money recently...even asked his old partner...and was surprisingly at the crime scene. Great episode.
Doh! Of course. I'd forgotten all about his money issue. I was thinking maybe her mother's 'gentleman caller' had accessed her home computer or something along those lines.

I look forward to watching this show each week the same way I looked forward to LOST, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, etc...
TeeJay1952 02-10-11, 01:03 PM Right now hands down favorite show on TV.

I had forgotten that Clarke had asked Adams for a loan and she had refused. I don't want to believe Clarke would betray his old partner so profoundly but it sure likes he did.
This week's Southland was terrific. It was a dark reminder that the biggest victims of LA's celebrity obsessed tabloid journalists, and the reaction to them by elected officials, are often the celebrities themselves. I thought Sammy's learning that the baby his estranged wife is carrying is his after all was a gut shot. I really was expecting it to turn out the other way. I hope this doesn't mean we aren't going to get rid of Sammy's wife after all.
Young C 02-10-11, 03:24 PM This week's Southland was terrific
Agreed.
I'm glad that Sammy got good news. His new partner seemed to not care though.
I like that actor, Sammy's new partner.

I forgot to mention the reappearance of Sammy's wife (apparently from the preview after the show ended). I thought the way they addressed Sammy's return was pretty raw and showed how he's not the same Sammy he was before. He's Angry Sammy now. He lost his partner, he lost his wife and now the kid is his. I think we got a glimpse at how dark his character is going to become...and I think Shawn Hatosy is playing the angle well. That scene when him and his new partner went BACK to the scene of the crime at the end of the show was AWESOME and INTENSE. Shall be interesting to see what Sammy's future holds on the streets...and after he clocks out.

I'll have to re-watch, but how did he get his hands on the photos? From her work computer? Anyway, makes the comment by the Latina partner more significant -- "I don't like you ... I don't know why. " (or something to that effect).
Agreed.

How do we know for sure? Did the camera follow his every move, stuff does happen off camera that we don't see. It's totally plausible that he took his own, esp when they check Adams and the photos don't match. He even said to her, they she will be found innocent. I stand behind he took his own until proven otherwise. Why was he there in the first place?

Unless you're digging for gold in Alaska. As for Southland, I had thought that he took the pictures when no one was looking, but I suppose it's just as plausible for him to have gotten them off his former partner's computer; he does spend a lot of time at his desk these days
rharper 02-14-11, 08:37 AM I missed the last episode and have been watching TNT's site, but it isn't up yet. How long before TNT usually posts the episodes for online viewing?
Thanks,

Reminds me of that Ojays song 'For the Love of Money' in this case $500,000:D
Reminds me of that Ojays song 'For the Love of Money' in this case $500,000:D
and the murder is eerily similar to the OJ case
Fantastic episode, some very powerfull and emotional scenes.
It took me a while to figure out where I knew the actor who played the guy shot in the head, then I finally figured it out, Lem on "Better off Ted".
Young C 02-23-11, 07:52 AM wowzors.
Last night's episode was something else.
John coming down without his drugs.
Sammy going crazy.
Nate's wife leaving out of state.
John not taking drugs was something else. He was a real jerk. The way he chewed out the CPS lady was not cool. I guess his point was well made at the very ending though.
I wonder if he'll relapse on the next episode. I think he needs to get that surgery and be done with it. The LEO company does not require a annual fitness test of some sorts? I could imagine that John would fail due to his back problems.
I'm glad Sammy got his act together at the end. I would think he needed more hard copy evidence that the guy killed Nate. All he had to go by was the first page of the lady's file. He was acting crazy though. lol.
It was interesting to see that "hardcore gangster" tear in his grave. It showed that real thugs do get emotional. :p
I personally liked Sammy and Nate's wife together. Like her son mentioned, she crys less when Sammy is around. I can see her point though, she thinks of Nate when staying in that house. Time to move on from the 'horror stories'. Maybe that's better off for Sammy, one less thing on his plate to worrie about. I doubt Sammy would go back to El Paso, Texas with her.
Oh, the drunk lady who lied in court. What a weirdo :p
2 more episodes before the end of the season.
Edit: Too bad we did not see Ben and Kayla (the black waitress) hookup. I thought she was pretty.
I wonder if we (the viewers) will get to see any more of that storyline. I want to see more of her. lol.
The Sammy/Nate storyline seemed to have some closure as far as letting go. Sammy let the gang banger go, though it appears he knows he was the killer..and he's going to let Nate's wife go...because it's the right thing to do.
Cooper's pursuit of the child molester was admirable...and I could tell for him it was personal--and the fact that another layer of his onion was peeled back when he told Ben that his father molested/killed his girlfriend. I knew his father killed someone...but don't remember it being said that it was HIS girlfriend. May be a reason for the path that Cooper's life has taken. And I told my wife that I thought the gray haired guy that Cooper was talking to in the park was the molester---I thought that Ted Danson...and the voice also sounded familiar--who was that actor?
Dewey and Chickie were able to see that Cooper was strung out...so was the prisoner with the squished nose in the back of the squad car. Can't wait to see how they handle the "bottom" for Cooper when he reaches it.
The coming attractions for next week seem to lead you to believe a certain newer cast member will be shot.
steverobertson 02-24-11, 06:28 AM Another great episode and really hope this gets picked up again.
Young C 03-02-11, 11:53 AM Great episode last night.
How about John and Ben? John was out of his mind!!
John Mason 03-02-11, 12:20 PM That was one suspenseful shootout with the flipped-out assault-rifle dude, anticipated with their intro clip, plus the overheard pistol-range tip about two in the chest then one in the head. Almost topped her earlier at-home shotgun shootout. Guess, for a TV drama, we should overlook the SOP of calling in SWAT, with many of those trying to escape getting shot meanwhile. -- John
Young C 03-02-11, 12:31 PM I agree. That was a great scene.
I feel bad for the real life shoot-outs like that. School, Government, etc. shootings. Horrible stuff.
Must say I didn't see that one coming...that Rodrigo would be Ochoa's son. When he popped into the hospital room at first I was thinking he was Ochoa's BF/squeeze. Now from the coming attractions it seems that he's going to come between the 2 of them.
Ben stepping up was a development. Chicky told him he should do it...and Dewey confronted Cooper last week. Should be interesting to see how they end the season WRT his addiction/pain.
Poor Sammy. This crazy woman puts a "find a friend" app on his phone. Oi. At least he didn't melt down. Maybe he's on the way back up mentally?
Southland definitely pulls off the shootouts real well. Between the bank robbery scene earlier this year and the shootout at Lydia's house last year...this show does intense gun scenes very well. Procedurally it seemed odd that they were the only 2 cops there for the whole scene/shootout but boy was that intense.

I love Southland's dark twists. That Sammy's unborn child gives him a permanent connection to his horrible wife, or maybe ex wife by now, is heartbreaking. She is dumb and clueless but a monster nonetheless.
The weird dynamic of Lydia developing a romantic interest in Ochoa's son is another slightly creepy but interesting development, and Cooper's free fall into drug addiction is another. Anyway, Southland is one of my two favorite shows on TV right now. The only other show I think is in the same world is Justified.

dad1153 03-07-11, 04:20 PM TV Notes
Report: 'Southland' Likely to Be Renewed
By Robert Seidman, TVbytheNumbers.com - March 7th, 2011
TNT is on the verge of renewing Southland according to Variety.
The cable drama is set to end its third season Tuesday — the first 13 episodes were split into two seasons — and with stellar critical support and ratings that are nowhere near cable’s best, but solid and consistent enough for the Turner net to tolerate, all indications are the skein will be making a return engagement. TNT is likely to make an announcement in the near future.
The story notes that procedural shows are big profit generators for TNT. Southland is produced by Warner Bros, which shares a corporate parent with TNT.
NBC renewed Southland after a brief first season and then famously canceled the show before airing an episode of the second season.

Young C 03-08-11, 04:22 PM Can't wait for tonight's episode.

It would be nice to see John get the surgery he needs for his back as well.
I hope we get some "closure" with Ben and John. That is, if Ben will be on his own next year and no longer rides with John.
Well the title of tonight's episode is "Graduation Day" and John said in the last episode that Ben's probation period is almost up.
jazzbass 03-08-11, 11:11 PM Great finale! I really hope this gets at least one more season.
Definitely a lot of storylines to start a new season with...or ways to move characters off the show:
-Does Cooper kick his habit and get his back tended to and return to the job?
-Does Ochoa stay with Adams?
-Does Sammy regain his focus and can he keep it together?
-Seeing Sherman in the car with Sammy and Sherman smiling as the car drove off left me thinking that Sherman is on his way to being a solid cop--but now he's got some more baggage to deal with as far as handling Sammy
-When Dewey left the druggie on the bench---did he finally realize he can't save everyone (i.e. her, Cooper, etc...)
-Will Chickey make the move to metro?
Great finale. The car chase and the foot chase/scuffle on the roof were, once again, INTENSE...this show does it well.
Young C 03-09-11, 07:38 AM Here is my mini "write up" for the Season Finale.
The Leprechaun shoot out and how Sammy was leaning over and 'torturing' him with "Remember Nate Moretta!!"
I thought that was brutal.
Very pleased to see Lydia finally with somebody. Her luck with men isn't the best.
Her partner took is pretty well too.
The foot chase with Ben and John was very intense. I thought I heard John's back crack when he went over the security gate. I shouted out "ouch!!"
The guy they were chasing, that was crazy how he failed that jump. I also shouted out "damn!!".
I'm glad Ben did not attempt that jump.
Nice to see Sammy happy with Sal at the end.
Very nice to see Ben dropping off John at the rehab facility. John told Ben "Thank you" which is really nice.
John was on 3 types of pills! That was crazy.
petesimac 03-09-11, 08:37 AM Great SEASON finale (hopefully not series finale); hope to hell that TNT brings it back again next year; the best show on TV when Mad Men isn't on. The only downside to the ending is that unless something happens, Ben and John won't be riding together anymore. For me that was the highlight of the show, almost like a modern day Adam-12 where the seasoned cop teaches the new kid all his tricks; hate to think that is ending. Maybe John will stop being a trainer next year. And as to the fall in the chase scene, that was one hell of a stunt/CGI effect; I've never seen such a realistic fall on TV or in movies -- fantastic!
I thought Sammy was going to try and get the guy to admit he killed Nate. John saying "thank you" was a given, as it was set up a couple of times with them saying they need to have some one they arrest say thank you, which Ben effectively did to John. This was clearly written as if the show could end at this point, but fortunately that doesn't appear to be the case. Unfortunately we probably have to wait 10 months for new episodes.
bruce73 03-09-11, 11:15 AM What exactly was the dynamic between Ben and Sammy at the end? Was Sammy so ecstatic at being in uniform again he was playing at being a trainer? Ben is always so deadpan in his reactions, I didn't quite get it.
I guess having Ochoa as a partner wouldn't be half as bad as having her for a mother-in-law. ;) Something for Lydia to think about. :D
Agree on the CGI fall - really well done. In fact, that whole fight sequence was amazing.
^^^^^
Sammy asked to go back to a uniform because he feels he can make a difference. He also made it clear he could help young cops stay alive. He is a Sgt. and was assigned a rookie, in Ben, who he will try to mold even further than John.
bruce73 03-09-11, 01:16 PM @dm145: but I thought Ben had finished his training.
That body fall was crazy good. I wonder if they would have even shown it in that detail on network tv?
This show deserves a quick pickup notice.

Except for the Wilhelm scream. It's everywhere!
jazzbass 03-09-11, 04:16 PM Ben did finish his training and is released on his own. Sammy is just going to show around a pretty bad area. It's more of a mentor thing than a training officer sort of thing.
Except for the Wilhelm scream. It's everywhere!
That's a classic canned scream....and a great one.
I cringed when I heard Coopers back crack as he hopped the fence.
Very good season finale to an excellent show. Let's hope it gets picked up for another season.
Let me add to the hosannahs and agree that week's show was a great season finale. Southland's many three dimensional characters and their stories are consistently interesting. The stage is set for another great season. Now, all that's left to do is hope that the network suits decide to give Southland another year.

Young C 03-10-11, 10:10 AM In related to Southland talk, I took half a pain pill (hydrocodone) last night.
My back hurts a little from working out too much.
Don't worry, I won't get addicted. I've had the hydrocodone for 1.5 years:p
(Left over surgery pills)

Great Post -couldn't agree more. I still remember watching ADAM 12 with my two sons as they were growing up.:)
I too would like to see more of John and Ben w/o the addiction problem. But no way we get to see them play it straight. Those TV days are long gone.
I must admit I don't understand those at the networks who decide on programming. Why would you invest in a new cop show when you already have an excellent one?

Awesome news!!
Thanks for the update.
Stupid freaking show....had it on following TNT follwoing the NBA coverage, and said to myself...better turn the channel before the ear irritating bleeeeeeeps started...but wanted to watch Regina King, then the police officer says "goddammit' which was not bleeped, but enough warning for me that more was to come, so picked up the remote to turn the channel....too late, before make the channle change, there it was, Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! The TNT executives for this show should have some class - either leave out the swear words or edit them out. It's cable after all, and shown at 11:20 PDT - no needs for the ear irritating bleeeeeps.
???
So you've never seen the show then?
I think the only thing they censor is the f-word. And I'm guessing the c-word though I can't remember if they ever used it. Everything else is uncensored I believe.
And I'm fairly certain that using bleeps (as opposed to changing the words) was an artistic choice by the producers to give it a more realistic/gritty feel. If you want to hear it completely uncensored, buy it on DVD.

STUPID FREAKING SHOW!! I am watching the NBA post game and they follow with either CSI or Southland. I am at my computer and saying to myself, better turn that channel soon or the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeps are going to start flying, assualting my ears....getting ready to turn the channel.....too late, the freaking show has two ear piercing bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps in the first twenty seconds of the show. The producers of this show should be fired. Just say the MF words!!! (or edit them out altogether!)

So "Southland" will return the same date and time as "Justified" does on FX (Tuesday, January 17th at 10 ET). Good thing for DVR's.

For 'Southland,' a home of its own
Axed by NBC, the gritty cop drama was picked up by TNT
By Louisa Ada Seltzer, Media Life Magazine - Jan. 17, 2012
Two years ago it seemed highly unlikely that "Southland" would make it to a second season, let alone beyond that.
In a highly unusual move, NBC canceled the show just days before its second season was slated to begin. A few weeks later, TNT picked up the gritty cop drama.
The show, which will air its fourth-season premiere tonight at 10 p.m., has never been a huge ratings draw, but it's arguably TNT's most critically acclaimed show now that "Men of a Certain Age" is gone.
And that's helped "Southland" return year after year while shows like "Memphis Beat" and "HawthoRNe," which had stronger ratings, were canceled.
"Southland" averaged 2.9 million total viewers last season, according to Nielsen, up 8 percent from season two. That includes seven-day DVR playback, which adds a big kick to most of TNT's shows.
The audience is still less than half the 7.5 million viewers that "Southland" averaged in its one and only season on NBC. The network dropped the drama because it was too gritty, and NBC was worried about offending advertisers and viewers with frank storylines about violent crimes, drug abuse and other controversial topics.
Without any such worries, cable is a more comfortable venue for addressing such topics, and "Southland" has now matured to the point where the crew of Los Angeles cops on the show are undergoing their first shakeup.
Tonight Lucy Liu ("Ally McBeal") joins the cast as a new officer, just as partnerships among the returning policemen are changed.

Young C 01-17-12, 10:04 PM That was a tremendous season opener.
Glad it's back.
rustycruiser 01-17-12, 10:11 PM Awesome premiere. I really enjoy this show, so much so that I dvr Justified and watch Southland live. And I love Justified. The scene with the truck and the rapist. Ouch!
petesimac 01-17-12, 10:26 PM I don't think I stopped smiling throughout the entire show! Quality TV is so rare anymore, and it has been a long time since Southland finished last season. And yes, I'm a Justified fan too; can't wait to watch tonight's episode. And in March, Mad Men. I just wish TNT hadn't canceled Men of a Certain Age.
Fantastic! But what happened to Chicky?
I watched watched "Justified" first starting at 10:25 then "Southland". Was done by midnight and never saw a commercial. I love DVR's.
Fantastic! But what happened to Chicky?
I completely forgot about her. I'm guessing I wasn't the only one over that long break. lol
Southland is still fantastic. Is it just me, or did it seem a bit more colorful? Sharper even? Maybe I'm seeing things...
Ray Lucca 01-18-12, 06:18 PM Pretty aggressive episode. lots of non-stop action. The Police station scene reminded me of Terminator 1, only in the day-time...Very good, and Justified was also very good, and White Collar was also ok.
charlie460 01-18-12, 08:10 PM I really like this show...
Agreed - was looking forward to the return, and was not disappointed! They could lose the hashtag on the bug tho...
rrainwater 01-19-12, 08:17 AM They could lose the hashtag on the bug tho...
Doubtful. Some of these shows have found Twitter is helping keep them relevant. For a show like Southland that doesn't do big ratings, it is almost essential. That is why they have actors tweeting during the show.

I know - but I've come to a point where every show with a even somewhat giant bug - I don't really care how great it is, I stop watching. It's annoying as hell. I'll live with it on southland, as it still blows others away, but I'm still not happy about it.
Just wow. Layers upon layers of content touched on for multiple characters. All fit into the first 1 hour show!
The introduction of Lucy Liu's character---did she ultimately get the better of that HUGE guy? Did she shoot him? And her comment to Cooper about WANTING to ride with her because he wouldn't hit on her..does she really know he's gay? {He's spoken for}?
And Lou Diamond Phillips taking a bullet after his confrontation with Sherman in the locker room.
I could go on and on.....:D

I'm going to say she thinks he might be, but not 100% sure. I swear I heard her chuckle a little when she said "what are you going to do, grab my thighs?"
That shoot out too... AMAZING! Can't wait to see the rest of the season unfold.

Young C 01-24-12, 10:12 PM Great episode tonight.
This season has been steady with lots of action. I'm enjoying it.
That was unlike Officer Ben Sherman
I also like the two new officers on the squad. Unless if they were apart of an older casting.
It's a shame that this show has such a short season.
BIGA$$TV 01-25-12, 11:30 AM Agree, but let's just hope the seasons continue for many years!
It's a shame that this show has such a short season.
C. Thomas Howell's Duey character is a riot.
Seeing the rich guy and the staff bust out in celebration when they found out that his wife wouldn't be coming back home because she was...hit by a car and likely dead... priceless!!!
And the scenes with the new Captain...also very entertaining.
And the fact that Duey mentioned that Chickey was moved to another command/post explains where she went.
How bout Sal? Wonder if they'll touch on his whereabouts...and the litany of ex-partners that Lydia had.
I'm wondering if Lydia and her new partner are going to take their relationship off the clock next...?
bruce73 01-26-12, 08:36 PM C. Thomas Howell's Duey character is a riot.
Yeah, the line about the moped had me howling.
I'm not loving Lucy Liu's character yet. She doesn't look like a cop to me at all. And the interaction between John and her seems really flat. Not like what we saw with Ben.
And I wonder why more isn't made of John's sexuality. I appreciate that it's not being exploited, but it's kinda like the elephant in the room. As honest as this show is, I'd think they would want to address it somehow.
cwilson 01-26-12, 10:35 PM I'm watching this show, but the writing only gets a "B". Always something that is over the top or impossible to believe, or just doesn't make sense. The dialog isn't particularly clever. Could be better.

I thought "Grambo" and Dewey's porn store back and forth with Cooper and Tang was hysterical dare I say Clever?
Add to that the dialogue between Cooper and Tang with the naked guy running on the street and them telling him to take the Highway because it's not illegal to run on there.
I think there's lots of better than "B" dialogue on Southland.

I think most regular posters to this thread would agree with you that the writing in Southland, especially the dialog, rates more than a B. Count me in their number, by the way.:)
Dewey says something every week that makes me howl and I think the relationship between the wounded warriors, Cooper and Tang is going to get more and more interesting. Both have had their problems but neither of them is about to give up, either.

I strongly disagree. The show didn't last on NBC because the writing is too clever. It isn't filled with enough cliches for a major network. There are over the top moments but never does the dialog make me roll my eyes like most shows do.
cwilson 01-27-12, 03:49 PM Didn't mean to upset y'all. A "B" is pretty good, actually. Just not up there with Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, and a few others - in my opinion.

Think nothing of it. I suggest that most of us around here believe that differences of opinion are the mother's milk of lively discussions. I agree with you, by the way, that few if any shows on television these days can match the quality of the writing on Breaking Bad. I think most would agree that there is no better writing on any show.

Agreed. But at the same time, like you said, I'd still give Southland an A...definitely not B-level. Southland rings truer than any cop show I've ever seen, from the dialogue to the situations. I know people say that what they see on the show seems far-fetched, but I can tell you that just from watching the local news/reading the local paper, that a lot of crazy ish happens in LA. I've seen a lot of crazy ish happen in LA. lol It may not all happen in one day like on this show, but it happens. That naked guy running down the freeway? That happened last year.
Sure they may embellish a bit, but really, it's only just a bit.
Edit: And if you ever hear local radio shows etc. where they have the actors on and have people call in, a lot of times it's cops (LAPD/LBPD/whatever) calling in to say how much they appreciate the show's realism.

I loved the scene with the naked jogger and laughed out loud when Tang directed the naked guy to run on the freeway, thereby relieving the LAPD of the problem and making it a highway patrol matter. It's little touches like this that make Southland so much fun.

There are over the top moments but never does the dialog make me roll my eyes like most shows do.The show didn't last on NBC because they needed 10pm vacated for Leno and that's too gritty to run any earlier in the evening. That said, it might have still been pulled for the reasons you cite. It's definitely not a mainstream show. But a lot of people said that about "NYPD Blue" and it ran forever.
I still think NBC wishes they had this one back. And with the bigger budget that comes with being on the network, who knows how much better the show could have been (not that it's not great now). Or it could have been worse if they tinkered with it as networks tend to do.

Young C 01-31-12, 10:21 PM Good episode tonight.
I thought something bad was going to happen when Sammy left DayDay a lone cuffed around the pole.
John and Jessica rolling together is nice. I was surprised both of them let that guy punch the dude.
Garrett Adams 02-01-12, 07:00 PM It's a wonder they can pack so many fleshed out encounters in 42-44 minutes. Southland definitely does not drag!
mphtrilogy 02-02-12, 08:15 AM I loved the punch bit where they let the old man retaliate... just a great show...
Young C 02-07-12, 12:15 PM Looking forward to tonight's episode.
Young C 02-07-12, 10:16 PM Good episode tonight.
The camera did a good job with Lydia's facial expressions. She sure was getting feedback about having kids and parenthood. I wonder who the father is.
Sammy and the dog. It 'sort of' paid off at the end. The family was so happy that the dog was saved and had surgery. I'm sure that made Sammy happy, then again the bill
Officer Tang and Cooper went through a lot of work to get the homeless man help. It was nice of them, and shows some side of Officer Tang.

I'm still waiting for the full backstory on Tang. I don't know why but I almost expect to hear that she's a lesbian. They haven't had Cooper ask her if she's married or has a man have they?
And as for Lydia---I'm thinking it's someone she's been on screen with in the past. Could it be a former partner? Could it be that guy who she was seeing in the first season who broke up with her? And (Rose from Lost) her mom is back. Is that the first time we've seen her since she went to Europe (Paris?) a season or 2 ago?
And I still love Dewey. The way he told the story about shooting the kids thumb off...and then the card/toy dog on the roof of the patrol car...priceless....
73shark 02-12-12, 07:57 PM They haven't had Cooper ask her if she's married or has a man have they?
I seem to remember him asking about her personal life and she shut him off.
I seem to remember him [Cooper] asking about her [Tang] personal life and she shut him off.
I recall that, too. I also recall when Tang later asked Cooper a personal question of her own and Cooper reminded her of what she had told him.
Young C 02-15-12, 08:47 AM Some of those pranks were harsh. The pregnant one especially
Good episode, I still like all the fast-pace action. Many different sub-stories to each episode.
Sad about the gay teenager who killed himself. Racism and Bigotry is nasty stuff. I think Tang overheard Cooper talk about being gay?
Lydia still hasn't come clean to her partner, I would think she needs to open up to him. They're partners after all.
Still one of my favs but last nights episode was very predicitable:
The pregnant waitress gag
Copper revealing he was gay to teen jumper
They did get me with the guy in hospital, grab his hand thing, all though it was not very funny.
Young C 02-21-12, 10:08 PM wow! Did Cooper get bit in the neck? That was ruthless
Good episode.

yea, i normally don't watch previews
that one made no sense, horrible in fact
this is the one show where anyone can die
and the poster who felt the need to "spoil" Coopers condition is equally horrible (i know previews are fair game but really?)
I myself try not to watch the pre-views at all , but I was distracted by the wife complaining that the show was Too Gritty for her & me saying that's why you have a Display in the bedroom , her retorting that I play mine way too loud !
it's a nightly discussion between us ,L O L
Sounds like you need a "man cave" with a set up that includes headphones. Mine is great.

That surprised me, too. Although I am far less sensitive to spoilers than most, I, too, wish the preview hadn't revealed before we even had a chance to see next week's show that Cooper was back on the job.

bingo
Young C 02-24-12, 08:48 PM I did not like TNT disclosing that Cooper had a bandage on. It ruined the suspense to the whole scheme. I thought he could have died
Lydia has to get a hold of herself. She should admit to her partner, and take time-off to handle the baby situation. We still don't know the father of the baby? I forgot if she came clean to her mother. She should absolutely tell her mother about the situation.
Ben and Sammy
I have to admit, I was on Ben's side. I thought Sammy planted the crack pipe. Just because of Sammy's past history with gang members and 'shady' decisions.
I was just thinking about Sammy's wife Tammi. We haven't seen her (or heard about) this whole season. Somebody, I want to say gwsat, wanted her to be out of the picture. Who ever it was got their choice :p
Maybe it was a couple members ha
She was always bringing drama and bad decisions into Sammy's life.
Still loving this show. One of my favorites.
Fastslappy 02-24-12, 08:54 PM Yeah this & Justified,POI are "Must See TV " here @ the house !
Same here, quality, intelligently written and performed TV, something you don't find a lot of on the major nets anymore.

You were right that I detested the Tammi character and right again that I rejoiced when she was gone. I don't know that I was the only viewer who thought so but I may have expressed my dissatisfaction more ardently than most.:)
Like you, I continue to love Southland as does my college student grandson. I save the episodes I record on my TiVo until he visits me and has an opportunity to see them. Along with Justified, I think Southland is the best thing on TV right now.

Yep, I was thinking that too. Like others have stated, this is one of the, if not best show on TV right now.
BlueTiger 02-28-12, 05:55 PM I haven't been liking this fourth season of "Southland" as much as the previous three. That can change. Retuning Sammy from detective to police officer was a way to accommodate a changing cast: of the original eight series regulars, from its premiere in 2009, just four remain: Shawn Hatosy (Sammy), Michael Cudlitz (John), Regina King (Lydia) and Ben McKenzie (Ben). I hope it gets better. Cudlitz's storyline has been the best so far, with getting Lucy Liu as his new screen partner.
Young C 02-28-12, 10:19 PM Lydia is still keeping it a secret. Even when her superior asked her what's going on. Everybody knows, or thinks about it.
Sammy and Ben. Seems like the closing words to Sammy really meant something. How Ben told him his apologizes were coming to an end, to cherish the moment. I like it better when they get a long.
Officer Tang!
We found out some of her private life tonight, as she is getting a divorce.
Her bad day really threw her off.
Cooper, at the end, was strong. I thought he was actually buying drugs. I'm so glad he did not fall through the cracks again.
Good episode.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way. So much so I was hesitant to post it. I find this season very disappointing. I miss the personal stories that gave these guys depth. It's turning into "Cops."

seems that season 4 has lost something that the other seasons had
too much details about feelings ( touchy & feelie YUK) I guess ? & no plot arcs that were stressful like other seasons . Plus there is no real bad Cop .
Young C 03-06-12, 10:04 PM I'm proud of Cooper's decisions to call his sponsor. He's doing a good job.

We're getting caught up and this was the last episode we've seen so far. I was watching an episode of Bering Sea Gold on Discovery and one fellow was knocked overboard by a steel cable that broke free. There was a camera man right there and he held on the the wrist of the fellow who was dangling over the side in the rather "chilly" water, but he sure as hell didn't put down that camera to render real assistance with both hands

Young C 03-13-12, 09:22 AM Hopefully there's a new episode tonight. It being Spring Break and all.
Maybe dad will post "What's on TV tonight" in the HoTP thread.
Can't wait for tonight!
Hopefully there's a new episode tonight.
There is. Then next week is the season finale.
Young C 03-13-12, 09:39 AM Awesome!
Thanks for the posting.
Young C 03-14-12, 09:02 AM Where to start.
I'm glad that Lydia told her partner she is pregnant. About time!
So now Lydia has told her mother and partner. All she needs to do is "come clean" with her boss.
Those stabbings were hardcore. That gang member could have killed her (and the baby) if she wasn't wearing that vest. Actually, one of the stabbings went through the vest I think. She was bleeding at the doctor's office.
I love the coalition between Sammy and Ben. Officer Sherman is taking stuff a little too personal these days. I wonder why we did not see any "back lash" from Ben taking down that pimp. I thought he would be in trouble.
The shootout between the pimp and the black & white was a little silly. I can't see a real life police shootout like that happening :p
Officer Tang. She got promoted but has a little lie behind the scenes. I wonder if that will come out during next week's season finale. I watched the previews for next week and John definitely has something to say about it.
We still have not seen Sammy's ex-wife, Tammi this season. Or for that matter, Nate's wife and child. I vaguely remember that Sammy was helping the family out. Maybe Nate's wife and child moved away from LA?
Good episode, I wonder what type of closure we will get for the season finale next week. This season was too short for such a good show :(
Where to start.

i knew it would be handled on the streets
i am glad the previews did not revel sammy's fate
Young C 03-14-12, 10:31 AM Oh, that's right!
I forgot about that
Do you think he was shot, or just banged up from the car wreck?
To me, it seemed like the car wreck.
car wreck
and this is what i love about this show: he may very well be dead
Young C 03-14-12, 11:07 AM Yeah.
Ha, for sure. Would make a good season finale, everybody would be in shock.
I would hate for Sammy to be killed off though, he's an original cast member and all.
The shootout between the pimp and the black & white was a little silly. I can't see a real life police shootout like that happening :p
Eh...dudes randomly opening fire on cops seems to happen fairly often unfortunately. It didn't seem unbelievable to me at all.
Did the picture seem soft to anyone else (I have DirecTV)? At first I thought it was me, but then the commercials were fine.

You're right. People get into car chases and car shoot outs all the time. Crazy stuff.

Speaking of the stabbing I went and rewound the scene where Lydia's partner got the perp off of her---and it looked like her whole upper body was covered with liquid/blood--but when she got up there was none. Then when she went to the Dr she had a small stain on her abdomen. Strange inconsistency.
As far as Nate's wife and kid---I believe towards the end of last season the wife said she was moving back to live with her parents. And I believe while Tammi's voice was hear in the season premiere--I'm guessing if something bad has indeed befallen Sammy we will most likely find out where she is...or even see her.
Young C 03-20-12, 09:29 AM The Season 4 Season Finale is tonight!!
Should be a good one :D
Fastslappy 03-20-12, 10:25 AM Wonder how the Lucy Lui character will play out , think they will kill her off ?
Didn't get around to watching last week's episode until last night. As usual, it was very well done and had another wonderful Dewey Moment.:) I hope the finale lives up to the high quality we have seen in the rest of the season. I suspect it will.
Good conclusion to this short season. For a minute there I expected Tang to get shot at the car wash. So was the gun next to the pimp Ben's other gun that he was cleaning at the start of the show, or did the guy really pull on him?
The exchanges between Ben and Sammy in the hospital and John and Tang outside the bar were fantastic.

I had the same feeling when I saw the gun on the ground next to the perp...er pimp. Shiny silver gun...much like the one that Ben had on the work bench in the beginning when he was cleaning the guns.
And does this spell the end for Regina King's character? Thought it was an interesting pairing of Lou Diamond Phillips character and Ben as far as partnering up--what with the issues each had with the other earlier in the season...and then Ben POSSIBLY coming full circle and making his problem disappear by planting a gun on the pimp.
Gives you a lot to think about as the season concludes.
Someone refresh my memory---were they picked up for another season?
NetworkTV 03-21-12, 09:56 AM Someone refresh my memory---were they picked up for another season?
Last time I heard, they were still waiting to hear.

yeah, i think he planted the gun and sammy knows ben hunted and killed pimp

I'm still not sure about the gun. I would like to assume it was planted, because of Ben's aggression and involvement with the pimp and the two ladies.
I agree. Wonderful job for both Ben and Sammy and John and Tang. Even John cared about their conversation because he ended up keeping the orange cap on his key ring.
I'd like to see Officer Tang return next season.
And does this spell the end for Regina King's character?
I would doubt it. She's a lead cast member. Maybe they'll make next season (if it passes) as a year went by and she's back to work.
I've always liked her character, would hate to see her go.
I'm glad the whole pregnancy chapter came to an end. Harsh reality for the father of the baby though. Ruin his marriage or keep his new son a secret and have no visitation rights, etc.
yeah, i think he planted the gun and sammy knows ben hunted and killed pimp
The final moments of Ben and Sammy in the pool. I think this is what they were thinking. Sammy knew, and Ben felt like he gave Sammy his "wishes" as a mentor to him. The mentoring as in the conversation in the hospital.
Good season finale. Hopefully Southland returns next year.
Fastslappy 03-21-12, 03:11 PM yeah it was a Great ending ,I liked the final part with John barking @ the Rookie .
It showed to me that John finally has his MoJo back & is moving on ...
BoilerJim 03-21-12, 04:27 PM And don't forget the red tip of the toy gun (that Tang threw to him outside the bar) dangling from John's key chain in that last scene.

Yeah that's right !
Seems John , Sammy & Ben are going to be driving Drama points in the next season :D
This season showed Southland at its best. I thought it was in a class with NYPD Blue at its best and I have no higher compliment for a police procedural. There were so many great moments, most of which have been discussed by earlier posters, that I won't discuss them further here. Just let me finish by saying that Southland, along with Justified, has been the high point of my television week lately. Obviously, I really, really hope Southland is renewed.

+1100:D
I'm Glad I can record on DVR as they both are on @ the same time
Beerstalker 03-22-12, 10:37 AM I have heard that they are looking at doing 12 episodes for the next season. Haven't been picked up for 100% sure yet though. I guess they found out in June last year, and expect to find out for sure again sometime around this June.
I have a friend who works on the show. He says part of the reason they only do short seasons is the number of different locations they shoot in. Said they did over 200 locations for this last season's 10 episodes alone.

Southland Nearing Renewal
By Margaret Lyons, New York Magazine's 'Vulture' Blog - Apr. 9, 2012
Southland is on the brink of renewal, Variety reports, with TNT and the studio haggling over how many episodes the fifth season will include: Warner Bros. wants thirteen, and TNT wants ten. If we're taking polls, Vulture would like thirteen, too, please.
Southland is so good — think the pacing of an early ER with the dramatic potency of Homicide. Lucy Liu's arc last season was great, but we'd happily take double the Regina King for this go-round. Her Detective Lydia Adams is one of the most complicated, interesting characters on TV right now.

lynesjc 04-10-12, 01:18 PM Really under appreciated show. Deserves better ratings.
Southland is one of the best series going these days. There is no excuse, it seems to me, for it not be renewed for 13 new episodes.
Young C 04-10-12, 02:46 PM Hopefully it's renewed for a 13-episode season.
Love this show.
Thanks for the posting, dad.

++11oo I hope 13,but I'd settle for any !!! :)
While I was skimming the latest AdWeek I saw this in a new column their running,
RENEWALS
Southland: A reportedly excellent cop show on TNT that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves because, well, it's a cop show on the network that airs Rizzoli and Isles and The Closer and syndicated epsiodes of Law & Order and Cold Case, among others. But to the folks who love these things the heirarchy appears to go The Wire, The Shield, Southland, so this seems to be a victory for the forces of light.

I have no idea how accurate it is, but hopefully the author is right. It think the rest of his "renewals" have already been announced, so...
BIGA$$TV 04-22-12, 09:20 PM Well, I am in that group. 1. The Wire; 2. The Shield; 3. Southland. At least for shows in the last few years or so. I'd have to mention Homicide, Life on the Streets, Hill Street Blues, and NYPD Blue if going back further.
Good news on the renewal, I hope for 13 shows. A dream would be a network picking it up again with 20 shows or so and good budget.

Actually, I rather like the 10 or 13 episode seasons as it tends to concentrate the creative value of each episode over a major network 22-24 season which almost always has quite a few creatively dead episodes, basically filler just to get more ads in front of viewer's eyeballs.

+1! Too often the pressure to fill 22 episodes with story means that a few of them are just fillers and others do little if anything to move the plot along. In a well written show of 10 to 13 episodes a season something is happening all the time. In addition to Southland, Justified is a good example of the salutary effect of a shorter season.
Great News!
Southland is renewed for a fifth season - 10 episodes:

Outstanding I love this show and wish they had done the 13 but 10 is better than nothing
I'm pleased too. The 10 episode season doesn't bother me a bit. As noted in an earlier post, I think a shorter season often leads to episodes that are more entertaining overall than those of a 22 episode season.
Young C 05-05-12, 10:40 PM That is awesome news!
Thanks for the posting, CFC :D
