Just bought Taking Lives on ebay at $59. There are a few more by the looks of it. Don't know how long this ultra rare title will be up for the TAKING...

Well, since 70 lots of 30 were just sold in the last two days (40 lots at $199/lot and 30 lots at $299 each), it's obviously not going to be a rare title anymore. Anybody who wants it will be able to get it pretty cheap going forward (especially in about a week or two, as everyone receives their lots and starts reselling them as individuals), with over 2000 copies suddenly out there. That's 100 times more copies than was previously known to exist.

What's the HD-DVD have that the BD doesn't? Or why would one pay $60 instead of $14? Just as a collectible?

To think that I seriously considered paying hundreds of dollars more for what was, at that time, a very rare title..Still, at a little over 2000 copies (at this point in time) of this disc in circulation, it is a fairly rare disc! I guess this one will be like P2 in the actual amount of discs out there. To answer your question Pooper, yes, it's one of those discs that is a must have for those that have near-complete collections.

Anywhere from 1,500-2,5000 were produced. This is how many copies Warner would make for HD DVD catalog titles back in 2006 when this was pressed and packaged. It was not allowed to be sold until the Blu-ray version came out but of course a few leaked out. There is no more "surprise" titles that I know of. We might see more copies of Sublime, PS I Love You, August Rush etc. though (late Warner titles).

For me it works great just as a collectible: I would have paid $15(+$6shipping)= about $21 for the BD. Yesterday I paid $25 (incl. shipping) for the HD DVD I only could dream about before that. :)

I can see buying it if you're trying to get all HD-DVDs. Anybody here have all HD-DVDs?

Well, I'm sure someone somewhere has all the HD-DVD's, but collectors of all sorts of different items (baseball cards, stamps, etc...) hardly ever collect every item, they are interested in rare items. In the case of HD-DVD, this might qualify, so the interest. If you just want a copy of the movie at the highest home quality at the lowest prices, then you find that, in this case may the the bluray; of course this only applies if you own a bluray player.

If you're only interested in seeing the movie once or twice, then Netflix is for you. Anyone who buys the movie is a collector of a kind.

I find it hilarious how many people must have lost big time money speculating on such a crappy disc. I'm glad a bunch of them were dumped on the market.

There were less than 20 known to exist before last week....so that's not "many people". Its been pretty much offered by the same seller for the past year on and off on eBay for various prices.

Just because there were 20 copies out there doesn't mean several of them were not flipped many times over and over. Nobody who bought this disc cared about the movie, they were all speculating on value. I'm sorry if people got burned, but come on... they did it to themselves.

Nearly every copy (20ish) offered on eBay was done so by the same seller for the past year or so.

Most people who bought it were HD DVD collectors, not speculators.

I disagree. It was sought after for being rare, not for being an HD DVD that people wanted to unwrap and watch immediately due to a love for the film. The value was nothing more than a perceived value based on limited numbers. You can argue that these people were collectors, fine, but they all got caught up in huge big time speculation over a disc with an IMDB rating of 5.8/10. If Warner had released 100k of these discs back in the day, I wonder how many of those collectors would care? Maybe they would just save up their money for some awful crap like Zombie Farm....which of course will be worth millions one day...

Like I said, most of those bought those 20 copies (a few were sold around $25, and most of the rest, around $200), were HD DVD collectors, buying it for that sole reason, in the quest to get the complete collection. There were a few speculator/resale sales, but most were from bonafide collectors. Or do you consider collectors and speculators one and the same?

Glad I held off. I knew there would be more copies available. After all, the early ones offered on eBay, showed they were packaged (factory sealed with security stickers) for retail sale, so unless Warner destroyed most other copies they were bound to be available at a later date.

Just thought I would give a quick video review of the HD DVD version of Taking Lives since reviews on this version are slim to none. I thought the video actually looks pretty good, enough to warrant an upgrade if you like the film at all. The detail on the corpses is especially gruesome! I recently scanned through the dvd to compare before I bought the hd dvd, so I'm going off recent memory. Not sure about the audio, just headphones these days(18mo baby). Now that it can be had for under $20 I'd say it is a keeper. I own about 150 hd dvd's and about 100 bluray's; I would say this is a 7 on 10 scale for video; most of the movies I buy are a 9/10. Better than Superman the movie, not as good as King Kong (video quality)....hope this helps someone who is on the fence as I was. I only made it through the first hour so far as well. Any video compare ideas feel free to chime in!

Still haven't watched my copy. I got it cheap enough I can't complain. It might be somewhat more rare than your average HD DVD title, but for $10 thats cheaper than the Blu-ray last I saw.
