I have a Oppo 981 I bought several years ago refurbished. I've been happy aside from some macroblocking, usually on DVDs that are poorly mastered anyway. I watch on a Sony HS420 CRT, usually with 1080i upscaling turned on.

Recently as a "project" I've been watching nothing but Black-and-White movies. On these movies usually I notice extremely distracting and ugly moving green blotchification of the tones. This usually makes me turn the saturation on my TV all the way down, and then the blotchification goes away, but this is annoying when I want to watch something color. Plus recently I was watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, and you can't really desaturate Sepia tone.

Is there some setting that could be causing this that I can turn off? I bought it refurbished, could it be broken?

You might have better luck on the 981 thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760726

Do you have the player video settings at 0, or turned off?

Do you use a calibration disc?

You might try these tips for reducing macroblocking: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7270763&&#post7270763

I don't understand this, what do you mean by "player video settings".

I used avia only to set white and black level.

In the OPPO 981 SETUP menu there is a screen for video settings. Start with these set to 0 of Off.
