View Full Version : New home theater in honolulu.. HELP
puzzled 04-14-09, 03:44 PM I'm sending out an SOS to the great minds of the avs forum. I am starting framing of my house this wednesday and I am worried I have forgotten something. The plan right now is for a home theater. The dimesions are 16x20. I am planning on doing staggered studs, rsics clips with DD and GG. Suspend the ceiling(not sure how.. any advice) with a MLV layer on the floor above the home theater.
The theater borders a bedroom on the screen side and one above so I really need to do all I can to sound proof the room. I need help on should I make a fake wall to mount speakers on the front and the screen and how would I do this. I wanted can lighting but what I heard was that you can't sound proof a ceiling and then put can lighting in it so I was thinking sconces and indirect lighting in a sofit. My other question is I have a equiptment room at the back and how do you run wires into the room without breaking the sound proofing. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Also, my contractors English isn't so good so does anybody know any sites that have REALLY good pictures especially for attaching the drywall with the RSICs clips.

This statement has me puzzled. What are you planning on suspending and what do you think the MLV will do for you that DDW and GG hung on RSIC and channel won't?
puzzled 04-14-09, 06:15 PM I heard the MLV which would go under the carpet in the bedroom above helps with reducing low frequency sound transmission(bass). Thats what i read somewhere. Is that wrong or overkill.
puzzled 04-14-09, 06:17 PM oh yeah.. and you would have to bring more than just your stapler.. lol

Some instructions to have a look at.
MLV isn't the product / system of choice in this case.
You would not need staggered studs everywhere. Single stud next to foundations.
You will not need to bother with any of this unless you have a thick drywall ceiling. That can be suspended, by the way.
carboranadum 04-14-09, 06:49 PM I do tile! Will bring my own saw for a plane ticket and a porch to hang a hammock on.

single stud next to foundations? meaning? If the studs are connected directly to the foundation then a single stud is ok? Not sure where we are talking about. And I don't understand about the ceiling either. what do I need to get? Whisper clips, DD and GG and thats enough? Sorry if they sound like dumb questions. I've been through most of the forum, and I thought I understood what I needed to do, but I really don't have any construction background.... ARRRGGHHH.. HELP...

BIGmouthinDC 04-14-09, 11:24 PM Lets take it one step at a time. When people talk about foundation walls it is usually a basement wall which I suspect is NOT the case here given my experiences in Hawaii. In basements it is not necessary to stagger a wall built facing a foundation because we build the wall an inch or so away therefore technically it is already a double wall. I'm assuming you are building above ground and the walls are either exterior or face other rooms in the house. Staggered studs makes sense.
If any of these walls are NON load bearing it would be useful to use isolation clips to attach the top plate of the walls to the joists above. Assuming you can't do this all around the building it would make sense to use whisper clips and channel to mount the drywall walls to the studs.
As for the ceiling best practice, is to mount the ceiling drywall 9ddw and GG) on RSIC clips and channel or Whisper clips and channel to isolate vibrations from the floor above. Stuff the joist cavities with insulation (same for walls). On the floor above the theater you could use two layers of sub-floor sheathing with green glue between. You could also use a rubber mat it you can put it between the two layers and avoid fastening the top layer to the bottom with mechanical fasteners.
Carpet pad and carpet works a lot better than tile or hardwood floors above the theater but I suspect that is not in your plans.
I can also supervise your builder on the same trip as my fabric and acoustical treatment installation. I'll even throw in building your screen wall for you.

I have Hawaiian shirts. I can sit on a big chair, with a drink in a pineapple glass with an umbrella sticking out and heckle the workers.
Dennis Erskine 04-15-09, 11:39 AM I believe puzzled was looking for assistance, not a discourse on beer taxation. (Ahem)
nargesem 04-15-09, 01:46 PM The only way it is possible to assist, is a um site visit :)

Thanks.. thats a good place for me to start.. And yes, I don't have a basement. They don't build many basements in hawaii. So, I will go with staggered studs and go from there.
