I am currently remodeling my home and as the framing is in progress, I want to make sure that I account for the projector screen & subwoofer placement.

As you can see in the attached pics, it is an open 30'x30' great room, and I plan to have the screen on the NW side of the room and frame the wall.

I have more or less decided on the panasonic PT-AE3000 for the PJ, and using the projectorcentral calculator (see attached) for a 16:9 screen, I have a width of 108" and Height of 61" and a gain of 1.7 (ambient light)

The question is, if I am mounting the PJ close to the ceiling (at 6" from ceiling to center of lens)

1. what is the height (from ceiling to screen edge) & width (from side wall to screen edge) clearance that I need on the wall to fit this screen (124" diagonal)?

2. If this screen will not fit the 9'w x 5'h framed space, what screen size should I be looking at?

3. I am planning on adding a pair of ACI Force subs ( I own one) in the front at one of the positions indicated (either corner or 1/3th into the room). Sound right?

4. Any additional insulation/acoustic treatment other than R-30 insulation required?

Framing goes in this week, so I just need a rough opening size for the screen. The ceiling is 8ft.

I am not able to post images, so here is the link to the album -

Screen size is dependent upon your seating distance. What is it?

Seating is likely to be around 13ft for the main audience, but if others choose to watch, the seating extends all the way back to 25ft, as it is one big room.

I tried using the link to image from picasa web album, and also the actual link, and both don't show up in the post.

They must have some protection of sorts because I was able to link and the image appeared, then later it disappeared. That is why I use photobucket. It works.

First off if you are going to be watching a lot of movies you might really want to think about a 2.35:1 screen format particularly with that projector.

This thread will be useful.

Next item, framing should be for the drywall, I would build the wall flat and hang the screen on the wall. If you want cabinets build them inside the room don't try to build niches in walls and expect that they will be able to work with your gear now and forever. It is easier to change cabinets than rebuild walls. If you want a flush false wall, like mine. You build it after the room is complete.

Now as far as screen sizes. Depending on manufacturer the screen frame will take up some room outside the screen surface. They are all different. That means if the screen is going to be 108 inches wide the total room required might be 114 inches. Again I would recommend building a flat wall, then build out your room to fit your selected gear.

Another FYI, a custom size screen might run you more $$ than the stocked sizes a manufacturer sells.

Most of the movies that we will be watching are 16:9, and then sports in HDTV. Hence the decision to go with a 16:9 screen. We rarely watch TV/Movies, but when we do watch it, it is a social event.

I agree, but I have a good deal on framing and I am trying to see how I can optimize them instead of building cabinetry later, given the high cost of cabinetry. So, at a minimum, I'd like to be able to frame a wall around the screen that come into the room by about a foot. I plan to use a roll-up screen, any screen in the 100-120" diagonal range with ample space for the screen framing and ceiling mount should fit into this space.
