"Iron Maiden: Flight 666", the feature-length documentary film which follows the IRON MAIDEN bandmembers on the first leg of their "Somewhere Back In Time World Tour" in February and March of 2008, will be released on extended Blu-ray and DVD formats, alongside a double-CD soundtrack album and limited edition double-vinyl picture disc. It will be available Monday, May 25 on EMI Records in Europe, and Tuesday, June 9 on EMI Records Canada and UMe in the USA.

For "Iron Maiden: Flight 666", IRON MAIDEN was accompanied everywhere by award-winning documentary makers Banger Productions from Toronto in Canada, who have received international critical acclaim for their previous movies "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" and recently "Global Metal". Producer/presenter Sam Dunn and his team bring an intimate, behind-the-scenes view of this remarkable journey, with a close look at the logistics involved and following Team Maiden in the cockpit, on the plane and on and offstage, getting to the heart of this global adventure of a band that has very rarely even let cameras backstage before.

Shot in high definition and with superb 5.1 surround sound, mixed by the band's producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley, "Flight 666" brings to the screen all the drama, excitement and hysteria that followed the band around the world every time Ed Force One (the band's plane) touched down in a new country. The film documents the intensity of the punishing show schedules, the struggle with the time zones, the pressures of ensuring that every performance matched the energy of the many thousands of ecstatic and expectant fans from many cultural backgrounds, unusual angles from the spectacular shows... and, of course, the fun had on the way!

A special international "Iron Maiden Day" is being planned for April 21 with simultaneous showings of "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" in selected digital cinemas around the world.

As a very special bonus for the fans, MAIDEN has included a second disc of the entire set from the 2008 segment of this tour with the DVD (and as a long-play Blu-ray). Sixteen songs from sixteen different cities in eleven countries around the world, for the first time ever encompassing such varied places and cultures in one concert. (See full track listing below). In addition to a standard double DVD, EMI will release a special souvenir limited-edition deluxe DVD with 30-page booklet. The soundtrack audio version of the live show will be available on two CDs, as a limited-edition vinyl set with two picture discs, and a digital download especially for those fans who do not have DVD access or just want to enjoy the show as a great live album. All are lavishly packaged as an ultimate memento of a tour to remember!

To recognize the global phenomenon of MAIDEN, the Blu-ray/DVD are also subtitled in Hindi, Japanese, Dutch, German, Spanish, Brazilian, French, Italian, Portuguese and Swedish.

Comments band manager Rod Smallwood; "It's been a mammoth undertaking. From the first twinkle in Bruce's eye it's taken about three years to put band, crew and equipment in a giant flying 'splitter bus', to go through all the long and tiresome prep and safety regulations and planning, to the actual filming and of the tour itself, through to post production and right up to putting together all these items in the very best quality possible for our fans."

"It's great that with Maiden Day on Tuesday April 21, we can give our fans the opportunity of seeing this digitally on big screen in Hi Def with the full-on 5.1 sound experience with other fans around them. It was also very rewarding that it has won the prestigious SXSW Film Festival Award for Best Music Documentary.

"The 'Somewhere Back in Time Tour' reached almost 2 million fans in 39 countries and, if there is one thing l know from managing MAIDEN all these years, it's that our fans are not happy to wait too long, so we are delighted that EMI (Ume USA) are rush-releasing the DVD. This closes the chapter on an absolutely brilliant experience delving into the past for the band, myself and my team, the crew and hopefully all of you fans out there. After the summer and some deserved time off, we will concentrate on the 'new,' with the band starting to put together material for a brand new studio album due sometime later in 2010. And, of course, after that we will look forward to seeing all our fans again!!"

The film "Flight 666" is being released in the following manner:

* Long-play Blu-ray (1920x1080 HD) with "Flight 666: The Film" and "Flight 666: The Concert" (215 minutes)

* Double DVD

- Disc One: "Flight 666: The Film" (112 minutes)
- Disc Two: "Flight 666: The Concert" (104 minutes)

* Plus limited-edition deluxe double DVD of the above with special packaging and 30-page booklet

* "Flight 666: The Original Soundtrack" album - Double CD*

* "Flight 666: The Original Soundtrack" album - Limited Edition Double Vinyl Picture Disc

Yeah, I caught the LA Forum show early in the tour as well, really enjoyed the show. What a treat it was hearing Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner live again after over two decades. It was interesting to compare that show to my memories of the '85 tour and home video. I was at one of the Long Beach shows that was filmed for the "Live After Death" home video and I have to say, Iron Maiden is one of the most consistantly excellent live bands I've seen in 30+ years of going to concerts.

No Children of the Damned?

No To Tame A Land?

No Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner?

On the plus side, if the band's DVD history is anything to go by, this set will be absurdly great value-for-money.

This is excellent news!!! I have been a fan since 1980. I still remember being a member of the fan club back in 81 when they had a fan newsletter typed and sent out around the world to maybe 1000 fans max. I got to see them front row in 84 in Halifax Canada with openers Twisted Sister. What an amazing show. I felt like I was at the epicenter of metal time and space. Steve Harris was thumbing his bass like a madman. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith were the axe masters tearing the metal universe a new one. Bruce Dickenson was pretty new to the band but it was already apparent that he had the pipes to more than bring the band to a new level of metal godness.

I bought tickets to this tour but sadly had a business trip that forced me to sell them. So this is going to be a real treat to see them again in 1080p glory and hopefully HD sound. Regardless I'm going to see this in the theater and buy this disc no matter what.

The audio question has been answered - the picture is 1080p and was shot with HD cameras. Sorry I don't have the codec yet.

Regarding the confusion on release dates, the Bluray is a Best Buy exclusive for the first month in the US. They will start selling it on 6/9 (along with the CD and DVD), but other retailers will start selling it on 7/7.

This is similar to what we saw with Twilight and some other sets. There's nothing added on the exclusive, they just get to sell it earlier than other stores.

Audo is a choice between 5.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby 2.0 Stereo, no PCM. The video does not seem as crisp and clear as the Maiden BD in fact it's 720p and the audio mix seems a bit off, something about it I cannot pinpoint, however. Now saying all that I DID in fact enjoy it while it is no where near Maiden in quality it certainly is not scraping the barrel like the Halford BD did. At least this was 16:9. :D

I'm just glad to see metal on Blu-Ray.

The Flight 666 announcement is pretty much the reason I picked up my Samsung 3600. I've been really unimpressed with how Blu-Ray was rolled out, etc - but if it's got Maiden in high-def, I better get on board.

This thread also alerted me to a Rush blu-ray. I'll skip Nightwish, myself, just like I did last year at Wacken (which Maiden headlined), but maybe it will be a rental down the road. I've also heard the Within Temptation disc is good.

Also, thanks for clearing up the Best Buy exclusivity. Sucks for me, but I suppose I can wait another month for Amazon to ship mine. Perhaps I'll finally be free to order a new Epson 6500 to replace my Sanyo Z5 in that span.

Just got home from volunteering at The Senator Theatre (very sad goings on there) at midnight & my wife just happened across the Palladium channel's broadcast.
I was dog tired, but was glued to the set until 2:20am. ;)

Thanks to everyone here for the info on the BD - I'll be picking up a copy at Best Buy this Tuesday!

I watched the Palladia version and got sucked into it. Is there a way of watching the bluray so all one sees is the songs, and not the other stuff? Also, is PCM lossless?

ahhah, i never understood the Janick Gers hate. He played skillfully, but his on stage antics were pretty animated :p

Animated. That is one way of saying it. Another would be that his on stage antics are pure 80's kok-rock.

Content wise, there is nothing exclusive about the Best Buy version, is there? I just want the Blu-Ray, I'm not interested in paying a little more for a Blu-Ray/CD combo pack.

Yes you have a choice of seeing the songs without seeing the documentary portion.

I would get his "kok-rock" antics if he was a "kok-rocker" in his days before Maiden. I never saw him perform with Ian Gillan so I don't know if he's just always done this.

The actually documentary rarely shows the full songs... they cut in and out of the different concerts, so you never SEE the entire live performance when watching the actual film.

The audio & video on the blu-ray is great. It is right up there with The Police Certifiable release. You guys are going to love the DTS-MA HD track. My Soundtrack CD should be here today from Amazon. The soundtrack also shows up today on the Xbox for Rock Band, which I'll be downloading later.

My Best Buy is showing it in stock this morning - the wait is finally over.

Gonna pick it up at lunch today. Got a damn meeting after work and then the Sox play the Yankees tonight. Tough call. Might have to get food poisoning at lunch today or something

Great thanks a lot. I guess i'll be picking it up on the way. It's going for a decent price in Canada it seems compared to most new releases on Blu.

Oh well, killer blu ray nevertheless!!!

Good luck, did the same thing just now (showed 2 in stock)and the whole BB staff couldn't find it!!!
Wasted my entire lunch hour...called another store closer to home (showing 2 in stock) made the guy put his hands on a copy and it is waiting for me (supposedly) at the store. We'll see??? Saw the Palladium concert last nite, its what made me pull the trigger. FYI, both Best Buys were only showing 2 in stock (but half price)!!!:D

Picked this up yesterday and skimmed through it last night. Overall, every bit as cool as I expected however I am a bit disappointed in the audio mix by Kevin Shirley. Just sounds a bit too muddy or "boomy" to my ears. I suppose it faithfully reproduces being in a large venue or outdoor festival style setting depending on the song, but for a home video release, I would have preferred a bit more separation and punch to the instruments closer to say, the original "Live After Death" 1985 home video. As far as the way it's filmed, the video is pretty crisp and thankfully isn't filmed in rapid 1/2 second jump-cuts like many live concerts are filmed these days - no friggin' wiggly-cam either!

And to answer someone's question, the menu does give the viewer to watch the songs as a concert separate from the biography program.

Still, This release more than does justice to the band and the tour and for the price Best Buy is selling it ($14.99), it's an outstanding value for any lover of hard rock and metal.

I got the bluray and cd for $26. A real steal in my opinion. Our bb had a ton of them. I got it before it even maid the shelf. I admit the sound quality does sound a bit off.

I HATE concerts shot with frenetic shot changes.

It is a lame technique to create a sense of energy -which instead should come from the performance itself.

Quick shot changes make it frustrating to "watch" a concert and get a feel for the whole experience. And it plain makes me dizzy.

I saw 666 on Palladia the other night and thought this was well done.

Watched mine last night, overall A+. I can always find something I would improve on(audio mix, song selection - can i play with madness???) but overall a solid package BD that did not disappoint! Would like to be able to swap audio from the concert only portion from the pop up menu, but I can do this on my BD35 remote so again not a big deal. Highly recommended on the cheap now at Best Buy.

Like it, or not--Can I Play with Madness is one of their biggest hits. Not my favorite tune, either, but the video had Graham Chapman in it, so it gets a pass from me.

Maybe that the vocals have pretty low volume compared to the guitars? I think that's pretty normal for them though.

I think the disc is great, but I'm pretty disappointed with the way Steve's bass is buried in the mix.

I've never been to a Maiden concert, but I can't imagine that Steve's bass sounds like that live.

I was really looking forward to giving my LLT a serious workout, but the mix is very centered on the guitars/vocals (Nicko McBrain is also somewhat buried in the mix).

Can folks who've watched both recommend to me whether I should watch the film or the concert first? Does the performance footage in one spoil the surprise of the other?

Thanks!

I watched the concert footage first, and was glad that I did after watching the film.

The songs are only partially played throughout the film, so you only get to hear about 1/3 of each one.

Finally got a chance to watch Flight 666. Fantastic disc. The documentary was great. Have to give a big thumbs up to the Canadian lads who made this documentary. Well done boys.

The concert was fabulous. The crowds were great and the set list that Maiden chose was awesome. Aces High and The Trooper in DTS HD MA was just incredible.

Seems to me Iron Maiden care about the stuff they put out. This is a great Blu Ray from start to finish.

A Maiden fan for LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone ordered this from Amazon?

I'm confused -there is one version listed as "blu ray" but then the product details say the format is DVD.

Then there is another that says its the blu ray 'film' but doesn't mention the concert footage.

Are there different versions on blu ray that are just the film documentary and others that are the film and concert footage?

Thanks,
Erik

To be honest, this doco didn't show me anything I didn't already know.

Yep: Maiden fans are passionate and like to scream "MAIDEN!!!" into the camera.

Yep: The guys in the band are chilled-out middle-aged dudes who like to play golf, fish and do very un-rock-like things in their spare time; like raising families and flying planes.

Yep: On stage these guys wipe the effing floor with any band half their age by the sheer power of their songs and their performance!!

I already knew all this. So to me this doco was nowhere near as illuminating as the on-going 'History of Iron Maiden' doco series that they've been assembling at this time.

And speaking of which, I can't wait to get to their justification of the horrendous 'Blaze Bailey' period of the band.:p

You think part 3 will feature any Bruce Dickinson solo stuff?

Those two records of the Blaze period produced exactly two good songs, 'Sign Of The Cross' and 'The Clansman'. Both of which were sung to the hilt by Bruce in that phenomenal 'Rock In Rio' concert.

That song's a masterpiece, made all the better by Bruce's vocalization in Rio. Rock In Rio really was amazing, I just wish the producers kept Steve away from the editing tools. :p

Wow. What a great set of live songs and documentary of the tour.
Their current set of fans are as enthusiastic as their base fans from the 80's.

Anyone who is or was a IM fan should really pick this up.
It was great to see them still packed with energy and excitement for their music and fans.

And they did it without sequencers, lip syncing and Auto-Tune.

This is great metal at it's best and true form.
