I am not sure if I am in right area? If not please link me to the correct part of the forum. Where I can repost this.

My cable company (cablevision) are going to TAKE away 16 stations On top of the 8 stations they did 5 months ago. Unless you get another cable box or CABLE CARD.

Are there any new CableCard ready set top boxes I could buy or a cheap DVR with CableCard ready?

Only DVR I found was a Sony and they said they discontinued it 3 years ago.

I rather have a box without a DVR. But it seems none I can find.

I want to use this box with my current Cable company

Thanks for the help guys. Hope I posted this in right area

At the moment, the TivoHD and Moxi are the only choices for CableCard DVRs.

What about a cable box with NO DVR? Any choices out there

Not with CableCARD.

You might want to wait till this winter when Tru2Way cable card tuners are expected to be widely available and also supported by most cable companies.
Google on
Tru2way for more info.

At first I didn't see where there would be set top boxes for this.

then I found

* establish a national platform to easily deploy new interactive TV content and features;
* ensure that a programming network’s interactive content will run on different cable systems, set-top boxes and consumer electronics devices;
* give content developers a standard, cost-effective way to “write once, run anywhere;”
* support a retail market for interactive cable-ready set-top boxes, HDTVs, DVRs, portable players and other new gadgets; and
* open new revenue streams for interactive advertising, subscriptions, and transactions.

Well Moxi box is $800 and Tivo is $600 plus $400

The old Sony DVR boxes were $1000 and now half that (discontinued 3 years)

So to pay these prices are nuts just to save $6.50 per month for a Scientific Atlanta box

So I will wait to see what happens with this True2way

I can not believe that there are no boxes with cable cards now to complete with a Monthly Cable box rental

Thanks for this info

Well, considering that until the tru2way system becomes more widely deployed, a "cable box" only device with a UDCR CableCARD would lose all these features:

Cable company guide
Access to PPV
Access to VOD
Access to SDV (without a tuning adapter) - applicable in some areas

No one in their right mind at this point would spend the money that such a retail device would require for a box that's probably going to be obsolete in the near future (with MPEG-4 on the horizon, along with tru2way and other features). With a DVR, like the TiVo, you have other desirable features to offset the features the cableco doesn't provide, but for a standalone cable box, it wouldn't possibly be worth it - there's no real reason to own it.

I'll believe this when they actually show up - until then, it's just PR.

Well I find an $800 box just unacceptable. moxi box

It would take 10 years of renting a cable box to reach the $800 price.

I don't need VOD or payper view on this one TV. The other TV's have the rent a box.

I just don't want to be forced to get another 3rd box because they decided to take away first 8 stations and now another 16. This is nothing more then to force people to get another box for $7 per month.

It seems I have no choice for a cable box to buy. Since Fios is coming to my area shortly. We were put on notice. Then I might be switching to them if they have the 60 stations without a box.

If the true2way comes. I will look into a cable box for that. Or when I get a new LCD tv

That said, you've got to realize that providers make their money on the programming. In most cases, HDTV STB and DVRs represent loss leaders for the multichannel providers. They lose money on the boxes and more than make it back on the programming.

Are you sure that you local FIOS service has 60 unencrypted QAM channels?

Are you sure that you local FIOS service has 60 unencrypted QAM channels? On Verizon FiOS, the local SD and HD channels and the music channels are unencrypted. Everything else is encrypted.

AFAIK cable companies are only required to broadcast unencrypted one subchannel from each high powered local OTA digital broadcaster. In most areas this would meant less then 10 unencrypted TV channels. Does this mean that FIOS on average broadcasts 50 unencrypted 50 music channels or do they broadcsast more unencrypted TV channels and maybe only 40 unencrypted music channels?

There are no cable channels available.

Music channels are highly compressed, so that represents only a few separate QAMs.

No I called them and did not get a straight answer. Plus they are not here yet but marked the street to dig. So I guess soon

Your first link is to a TV (not a box), and your second link is just PR for the spec. As I said, I'll believe that I can buy a tru2way STB or DVR when I actually see one on the shelf at BestBuy.

I used the first link to show that the cable companies have started the roll out on their side and the second link to indicate that more boxes will most likely be available this winter.
If you Google for Tru2way you will find many more links such as:

http://mediacenter.motorola.com/content/Detail.aspx?ReleaseID=11005&NewsAreaID=2

http://www.lightreading.com/blog.asp?blog_sectionid=419&doc_id=174711&site=cdn

I double that any BB store will have boxes on their shelf until all their local cable companies have upgraded to support Tru2Way.
