I've had my DirecTV receiver hooked to my JVC TV via HDMI for a year now with no problems. I'm eying newer source boxes on the horizon and my 15 year old HT receiver lacks any HD video switching so I bought a new Onkyo 806.
The problem is I can't pass any HDMI video sources through the Onkyo to the TV reliably. About 90% of the time I get no video at all. It *does* work sometimes though.
Analog video sources will pass through Onkyo and the HDMI cable to the TV just fine. The Onkyo's OSD shows-up on the TV ok. But a DVD player or DirecTV receiver connected to the Onkyo via HDMI won't show up on the TV reliably.

I tested the Onkyo with another TV at work and it worked fine.
I replaced the Onkyo with another one and it's the same problem with my JVC TV.

My theory is the JVC TV (built in July 2004) has an older version of HDMI/HDCP soft/firm ware that isn't playng nice with the new receiver.

JVC's email and phone support assure me that the TV works fine since I can plug the sources directly into the TV with no problems. They don't seem to think they can provide me with three more HDMI inputs though... go figure.

I'm wondering if there was any update or patch that can be applied to the TV to help me with my problem.
Anybody know?

JVC hdmi is VERY picky. You could try setting the sources and AVR output to 720p. Looks like there is a firmware update, but it does not mention your problem and only a technician can perform this because it requires a special interface jig and software. You could also do a reset to clear the errors-

Turn the TV on, and enter the Service Menu (make sure the switches at the top of the remote are to the left, press sleep timer, when sleep timer 0 is displayed press display and video status simultaneously). Select 2 for Self Check. Then turn the TV off, and after the fan turns off, unplug the power cord. Reconnect the power cord

Thanks Hammerdwn,
I wonder what the firmware update does do... If there's any HDMI update, that might do the trick.
I have a good relationship with the local JVC repair center. I guess I'm going to make an appointment.

I had my TV into the shop only to find that while the update software lists this model with several others, when you actually try to update it there's no updates available.
I guess I'm just SOL.
