View Full Version : Dishnetwork Vip 722K question
roller11 04-19-09, 12:50 AM I'm considering getting a 722K with seperate Mt2 tuner plugin giving it four tuner capability, 2 OTA 2 satellite. Can I record
4 shows simultaneously? Dish 622 allows all tuners (3 ) to record at the same time, so I would expect the 722K would also, but I'd like input from soemone who has actually tried to do this.
I do not have one, but my understanding is it can record 4 shows at once. The improvement is that it can record 2 OTA at once, 1 more than previously.

It *should* be capable of four at the same time (recording), but after finding out that the DirecTV box (hr20) has 4 tuners, but only two can be used at any given time, I don't want to assume anything, especially since the upgrade charge is non-refundable, and I'm stuck with the box for two years
even if it has design blunders.
What is the source of your information?
bobby94928 04-19-09, 04:08 PM According to this: http://www.dishuser.org/722k.php, all 4 tuners can record HD simultaneously.
While I understand, this box WILL record 4 HD shows simultaneously, I should mention that the software is still pretty buggy at this point according to many postings on other satellite-related forums.

roller11 04-21-09, 01:04 AM I've seen those postings too, Dish will be getting my box back if it has problems.
If I lived on the east coast or the west coast, I could get by with 1 OTA tuner. But in Denver, one tuner is wasted per channel cause of the overlap problem so I need all the tuners I can get.

I have had my 722k for 10 days with the OTA module for 5 days. Not a long term test, but something. It does record 4 HD shows simultaneously. Have not found a bug in it yet - works great!
Scott Greczkowski 04-27-09, 09:35 AM Yes it works and works well!
The unit was buggy when it first came out, but since the last software release has been rock solid!
I highly recommend the 722k now, it is a great DVR.
garytjia 05-01-09, 11:58 PM I had Dish 722 (L618) connected to Marantz SR7000 via optical audio cable. Recently, when the channel shows a 2.0 program, I loose audio. When they show 5.1, I get audio. Dish replaced my 722 with 722K(L618). However, I still do not get any audio through the receiver with non-HD programs and 2.0 HD programs.
In the Dish DVR System Setup/Dolby Digital, it is set to Dolby Digitial/PCM and RF Mode. I tried different setup, but still do not get any sound through my Marantz for 2.0 programs. The DVR is also connected to my Plasma HDTV with HDMI cable, and there is sound through the TV speakers with 2.0 or 5.1 program.
Does anyone know how can I resolve this problem? I believe it is a Dish network software issue. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
Given that you have tried 2 Dish DVRs and get the same result, I would guess that the problem might lie with your receiver. My 722 and my 622 both work fine with my Sony receivers using digital optical cables. Both of my Dish DVRs are running L618.
Ted
I agree with ncted. My 5.1 audio out works fine for all programming whether it is HD, SD, 5.1, or 2.0. My old DVD player did not have a 5.1 encoder so it used the stereo cables for 2.0 sound and the optical 5.1 for 5.1 sound. Both had to be connected for that DVD player to work for all programming. My 622 apparently has a 5.1 encoder so 2.0 sound is encoded into 5.1. Thus only the optical 5.1 is required.

No, it doesn't, and you have a gross misunderstanding of the audio formats that the Dish receivers transport over S/PDIF, and do not understand what you're observing.

No reason to be rude to Rick. My DVR sends 5.1 or 2.0 to my receiver depending on the program.

And to expand on that, my receiver, a Denon 4802, will automatically adapt a 5.1 feed to a 5.1 and a 2 channel feed to Prologic 5.1. That may be what Rick is thinking of.
AlbuquerqueJohn 06-03-09, 12:19 AM After receiving this Mickey-Mouse reply to my question, I can see why the courts would rule in favor of TiVo. "Workarounds" (versus their tall-talk excuses for "FLICKERING PICTURE ISSUES") appear to be a way to put off telling customers WE CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM AT THIS TIME!
Too bad they cannot HONESTLY TELL CUSTOMERS the TRUTH (especially those of us who hung in with them for 10 years). Instead we receive this garbage! I quote:
"You may be experiencing intermittent or complete signal loss related to the growth of leaves on trees since your initial install. Indications of this are a slowly declining signal strength or intermittent signal loss that has increased in frequency over the past several weeks. Verify that the tree leaves that have filled in are now possibly affecting your line of sight."
"If foliage seems be the most likely problem. Please contact us for additional assistance.
If not, continue troubleshooting."
(CONTINUING TROUBLESHOOTING PRODUCES THIS GARBAGE)
"Does this problem seem to only occur during the hottest parts of the day and then fix itself at night when the temperature is cooler?"
"Yes" – Please contact us for additional assistance.
"No" – Verify a clear unobstructed view from the dish to the Southern sky. After obstructions have been removed or the dish has been moved if needed, the signal will return.
(IT'S 90 DEGREES OUTSIDE WHEN THE ISSUE APPEARS!):
"Have you had any snow or ice storms that may have caused accumulation of snow or ice on your satellite dish?"
SOLUTION:
"If the problem persists please contact us or a local independent retailer for additional assistance."
Who have I been dealing with for over a month? Three technicians at my home and then the local "managers" came out. Issue solved? NO! They know it's not going away - but won't simply TELL THE TRUTH!

Then I read THIS:
June 2 2009 (AP)
A federal court has awarded TiVo $103 million plus interest in its long-running patent dispute with EchoStar Communications and ordered EchoStar to disable infringing features found on its subscribers' digital video recorders.
U.S. District Judge David Folsom on Tuesday also found EchoStar, which is now part of Dish Network, in contempt of court for violating a permanent injunction by reprogramming millions of DVRs with a new "workaround."
"The harm caused to TiVo by EchoStar's contempt is substantial," Folsom wrote. "EchoStar has gained millions of customers since this court's injunction was issued, customers that are now potentially unreachable by TiVo."
Englewood, Colo.-based Dish, which has roughly 13.6 million subscribers, said in a statement it would appeal the contempt ruling and file a motion to stay an order that requires it to disable the disputed DVR features within 30 days.
"Our engineers spent close to a year designing around TiVo's patent and removed the very features that TiVo said infringed at trial," the company said. "Existing Dish Network customers with DVRs are not immediately impacted by these recent developments."
The Alviso, Calif.-based maker of set-top boxes applauded the decision.
"We are extremely gratified by the court's well reasoned and thorough decision, in which it rejected EchoStar's attempted workaround claim regarding the TiVo patent, found EchoStar to be in contempt of court, and ordered the permanent injunction fully enforced," TiVo said in a statement. "EchoStar may attempt to further delay this case but we are very pleased the court has made it clear that there are major ramifications for continued infringement."
In after-hours trading, shares of TiVo rose $2.53, or 36 percent, to $9.51, while shares of Dish fell $1.19, or 6.9 percent, to $16.05.
TiVo first sued EchoStar in 2004 for violating a patent on a "multimedia time-warping system," which involved recording a program on one channel while watching another.
A jury in 2006 found that Dish Network's DVRs infringed upon a patent held by TiVo and ordered it to pay TiVo $73.9 million in damages. A federal appeals court upheld the ruling in January 2008, as did a second U.S. appeals court in April 2008.:(
pschwarz 10-14-09, 03:20 PM Hi Guys, i know the thread is old but I'm considering the 722k with the OTA module. I'm looking at the Dish Family package and they have no HD channels.
My questions are pretty simple:
1 - can i skip the local channels through dish and save the $5.00 since I'm getting locals OTA already. I just want them in the guide so I don't have to switch inputs, etc
2- if i skip the locals through dish can i still see them in the guide from the OTA input ? Are they in a different section or something. And will i see all the ones I scanned in the guide or just the ones from cleveland. I get locals from 3 cities around me.
3 - how is the 2nd tv connected - is it using coax or RCA .... seeing what I have to run.
thank you !!
Paul
TheKrell 10-14-09, 05:04 PM Yes, you can forgo the $5 charge for locals via Dish, but unfortunately the 8-day guide goes with it! Your guide for your OTA channels will say, simply, Digital Service. The receiver will not parse or display OTA PSIP data.
Were you to pay for your locals via Dish, you would get the 8-day guide data for all channels you scan in (assuming they are offered by Dish), even those in adjacent DMAs.
You normally connect TV2 via coax. But you do have the option of composite as well.
pschwarz 10-14-09, 07:06 PM thank you for the response!
with out the $5 can i still record them if the just show "digital service" ?
since most my OTA locals are HD does it just replace the SD channels in the guide or does it show both HD (OTA) and SD (Sat) ??
are you saying that i can get the sub-channels showing in the box - like say 23 has 23-1 thru 23-4 with paying the $5
my kids like 23-2 (KUBO) - so that is why i wondered.
bobby94928 10-14-09, 07:42 PM All of the sub-channels will show. You can record programs that show digital service but you would have to set up a manual recording just like with a VCR. It is entirely worth the $5 to be able to record programming by title. Also most sub-channels will always be shown as digital service.
TheKrell 10-14-09, 09:58 PM Also most sub-channels will always be shown as digital service. That has not been my experience around here (Washington DC area). Usually if the main channel has guide data, all subchannels will too.
