Can anyone tell me if a bad bulb in a Sony KDF-46E2000 would prevent the set from powering up for audio??
The set was given to me without any explaination of what happened to it. As of now, the power led blinks for about 20 seconds then I hear a relay click. The power led goes out and the red "bulb" led blinks. It's obvious that the set thinks the bulb is bad. I don't want to lay out the $ on a bulb only to find out that some other major $ part is toast.
THanks in advance for any help.

Have you pulled the lamp out and looked at it? Very simple to get to...
Yes I have. I wouldn't know a bad one if it bit me...... What should I look fer?
Thanks

If it's "blown", you will notice. The insides will be shattered into pieces. If not then gets more diificult. Mainly look down the middle at the glass "stem". Look at the base of the stem for a deformed spot, or white spot, or tiny hole blown through.
I know that nothing looked "shattered" when I did look at it. The assembly didn't make a jingle noise when handled, as if there were broken pieces of anything inside the bulb. I'll take a closer look at it tonight.
To my original question..... would a bad bulb cause a sony to not bring up the audio side of the set??
Thanks

The bulb "looks" good. I tried my best to take a few pics and post them to a personal page (my storage, not the forum's) Please take a look and tell me what you think.
Here's the link. [URL="http://members.verizon.net/~ham.man/sonykdf/xl-2400.htm"]
The first pic is just a head on lookee.
The middle picture shows what looks like a crack in the dielectric white "stuff".
The bottom pic shows "bubbles" in the back of the bulb.
Thanks

I have this exact model and just went through a strange bulb issue myself. I can confirm that a bad bulb will prevent the television from producing sound as well.
In my case, the bulb was not nearing the end of its life span, yet the tv would automatically shut down (picture and sound would stop) and the green LED would blink as it booted back up. This process would continue as long as you left the TV on. The video and audio would only last roughly 30 seconds before repeating the process.
I bought a new bulb and it completely fixed this.
Thanks for the info.
If I may ask a question, Looking at the LCD whatzit where the bulb assemly plugs in, do you see any kind of smudges on that shinny surface??? Please pardon the high tech terminology but I don't know what I'm actually looking at. The original owner may have stuck his hand / fingers up there trying in vain to make it play again....
Thanks,
Michael

The bulb "looks" good. I tried my best to take a few pics... Cracks and bubbles don't sound good to me. Your pics are difficult to decipher without a 3D peek.
...Looking at the LCD whatzit where the bulb assemly plugs in, do you see any kind of smudges on that shinny surface... You can clean that whole area with a can of compressed air, then microfiber cloth on the whatzit
Looks like I'll buy the bulb and see what happens...
Thanks
I'll update when I get da bulb!
