View Full Version : Is my Grafik Eye fried?

Have had Grafik eye working with one zone for several months now. Just added a second zone for some track lights and wired it up. When I tried it out, the circuit breaker tripped. (I've check out wiring to the lights and it's fine. There may be some internal short which I'll have to investigate). Anyway, went back to my original single zone for the can lights... but the lights ony come on 100%. The grafik eye shows that the lights are dimming and I even hear the "click when I try to turn them off. However the lights remain on at all times (even when I've turned them off). Did I fry the triac? Anyone else have this problem? Is there any built in short circuit protection. In retrospect, I should have tried the track lights on a regular switch first. Tried calling tech support but the guy on call Sunday evening was not familiar with the grafik eye. He took my name and number and said they'd call back, but I'm too worried to wait for them to call back.
Thanks for any help.

You did not wire it correctly. First clue ... the lights stay on after you turn them off. That "click" is an air gap switch which physically prevents current through a properly wired GE. Turn off the breaker, call an electrician.

I hope you're right Dennis. I worked for an electrical contractor for a couple of summers while in high school and currently do electrical design/programming and start-ups for an automation control company so I should be able to troubleshoot any wiring problems. I had to get ready to go out of town last night so I haven't had the opportunity yet. I did the original install and everything was working fine. I needed to move the location and I labled the romex before I disconnected it. I'm hoping I made a bonehead move and just mislabeled them causing me to miswire it, put I'm fairly certain I hooked it up the same as before (except that I also added a zone). That's when the breaker tripped, so I removed the zone I added but still have the lights staying on. I'll check the wiring when I get back home.
Not knowing the insides of the grafik eye, I assumed the "click" was some form of hardwire switch or relay. If it was a relay, I was hoping that there was no way that I could have welded the contacts closed even though the coil was de-energizing. Hopefully I just swapped the feed and the zone 1 hot wires. I'll let you all know when I get back this weekend (assuming I'm not too embarrassed by what I find):D
Thanks.

...I won't even begin on the bonehead things I"ve done. :D

A brief update. Checked all wiring when I returned home and it checked out okay. However lights were now turning off after the "click". Still no dimming. Called Lutron tech support- they suggested checking all the zones. Turns out it was just Zone 1 that wasn't working. Called tech support back and they said it was rare for a zone to stop functioning and they replaced the unit under warranty (even though it was a 2007 model and there's only a one year warranty). My hat's off to Lutron. Not only was their service excellent, but they were available on Saturday and Sunday after 5PM. Very rare nowadays. Received replacement today and all is working now.:)

I know this is an old thread, but it is very related to my problem/question: In case of a short circuit on a zone wired to the grafik eye, does the distribution panel circuit breaker does its job or the grafik eye unit, or that specific zone gets fried ?
