Adobe Systems will make its Flash Web technology available as a standard for Internet video delivery through a wide array of home entertainment devices, including TVs, Blu-ray Disc players and other set-top boxes.

Devices featuring the Adobe Flash Platform should ship to retail in the second half of 2009.

Cable operators and content providers such as Comcast, Disney Interactive Media Group and Netflix are supporting the development.

At this point, many Web services must fashion their video streams to fit different Web-enabled TVs, Blu-ray players and other devices. However, Flash-enabled hardware would presumably simplify the process, as the large bulk of Web content is considered to be compatible with this technology.

Adobe Flash Platform promises high-definition video delivery, as well as allowing consumers to quickly toggle between TV programming and Web content.

“Some 80% of all video content delivered online is delivered via Flash, and rather than try to transform [video] for a given device, you can use the Flash-enabled TVs [and other hardware] to accept that information,” said Anup Murarka, director of technology strategy and partner development, Flash Platform unit at Adobe.

It’s expected that Vizio will roll out Adobe Flash TVs in the near future. Details about other upcoming Adobe Flash hardware were not specified.

Content providers are hoping Flash can open up their digital programming to a much wider audience.

“Disney and Adobe share the vision of extending HD video and rich, engaging experiences across multiple screens,” said Bud Albers, chief technology officer/senior VP at Disney Interactive Media Group. “Adobe Flash technology plays an important role in delivering the latest Disney content via the Web, mobile phones and other consumer electronics. As a leading innovator for media and entertainment, we are excited about the opportunities of Flash-based applications and services coming to televisions.”

Bill Holmes, VP of business development at Netflix, added, “As the world’s leading online movie rental service, Netflix always seeks new ways for subscribers to find and enjoy the movies they’ll love. Adobe’s Flash Platform for the digital home offers great promise as Netflix continues its expansion directly to the television with our consumer electronics partners.”
