View Full Version : "The Last Starfighter"
JBlacklow 04-21-09, 12:43 PM Greetings, Starfighter. An intercepted Star League communication indicates Universal Studios Home Entertainment has nailed down a release date and disc specs for The Last Starfighter on Blu-ray Disc.
The once HD DVD high-def exclusive will come to Blu-ray on August 4 in a 2.35:1 1080p transfer with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.
Carrying forward the 25th Anniversary tagline from HD DVD, the Blu-ray edition will include identical supplemental features as its high-def predecessor with the new addition of BD-Live accessibility.
* Heroes of the Screen
* Crossing the Frontier: Making The Last Starfighter
* Feature Commentary with Director Nick Castle and Production Designer Ron Cobb
* Image Gallery
* BD Live Feature - Basic Download Center
* Theatrical Trailer

Here's an HD-DVD title I bought for $10 when the format died and didn't regret it. :)
Okay, I'll go first: The HD DVD suffered from heavy DNR, let's just hope Uni remastered this one for BD.
You beat me to it. I bet ya it will just be a port of the HD-DVD.
That's been Uni's track record so far. They wouldn't alter that course for a silly little teen sci-fi flick from the 80s. :)

There's been quite a bit of proof that the video encodes have changed for the Blu-rays. It was shaky at first (Mummy, The Thing), but they've had a few (such as the Bourne Trilogy) that show improvements over the HD DVD.

Universal has re-encoded their movies, but they haven't actually remastered them. The problems with The Last Starfighter HD DVD are on the master. You can't correct that much DNR just by re-encoding the compression at a higher bit rate.
I love this film. Hopefully it is better than the HD-DVD release.
But haven't the majority of those previously on HD-DVD been rather identical looking on BD (missed opportunities to improve)? I think Universal needs more time to reveal how well they're doing with the new format. It is still too early at this point.

cobolisdead 04-21-09, 05:13 PM I'll just stick with my HD DVD copy that I got about two years ago.

Not really. In some cases there were improvements due to a re-encode, in some cases there were claims of added DNR, and in other cases they are virtually identical. Regardless, they don't always do ports (of the same encode), but I would expect them to with The Last Starfighter.

Cover Artwork up. Hope they have gone to a new master though.
Kram Sacul 04-25-09, 04:07 AM I don't think Universal does new masters.
Filmmaker 04-25-09, 10:24 PM Like the isolated score.
And where are you seeing reference to this...?

I must be going blind. Thought I saw it mention an isolated score :( Post ammended.

pacpisces 08-06-09, 06:44 AM I own the hd dvd and it did not look as pasty as dvd beaver pics look to me. Does anyone know if they DNR more than hd dvd had. It appears so to me.

The HD-DVD transfer wasn't great, to be sure, BUT you're right, it did not suffer from THIS seeming amount of DNR. Looking at those screen caps I agree, it appears as if the image has been smoothed over perhaps even more.
Kram Sacul 08-06-09, 09:04 AM Looks as plasticy as the HD-DVD. Just godawful. (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews46/last_starfighter_blu-ray/large/large_last_starfighter_blu-ray1.jpg)
Bummer. Well, there's a new doc at least.
Stevie76 08-06-09, 04:34 PM And it still looks WAY better than the old DVD, so even though it been DNR:ed, Iīm gonna get it ;)

Stevie76 08-13-09, 10:29 PM I went over to a friend who owns the HD-DVD version of The Last Starfighter, and that version also clearly suffers from DNR just as the BD version. But itīs not so bad it turns everything into wax. It actually looks pretty good, so itīs still a buy for me :)
From Sony,never diappointed for picture quality with new tretment,I guess.
