View Full Version : panasonic entry into 40+ lcd market

This panel has shown up on the BB site and I saw it on the floor besides the 720p and 1080p plasma the box below clearly said lcd but this model has arrived under the radar.
Now I know that panny has had one available in other markets but not here in the US.
Is this a BB special purchase? Is panny testing the waters?
I'm posting this here to hear from both camps.:)
Looks like it is for Best Buy only, at least for now. Maybe it will be for warehouse club stores, also. Even so, Panasonic has listed all of its TVs on its site, usually before they are available; but this one isn't there, at least not yet.

I'm curious about the panel because I don't think its a panny

Appears to be a Latin America product that's made it's way to the states via Best Buy. More than likely manufactured by someone else also.

pcweber111 04-22-09, 12:08 AM The L after the TC would seem to denote the Latin America market if my understanding of their nomenclature is correct.

There is a Panasonic 42U1 1080P Plasma model available for the same price. You can find it on the Abt Electronics website.

I suspect that Best Buy has made a posting mistake. They do that a lot. Here is an example, on the Best Buy website, where they list a Panansonic Plasma model, in the specifications link, as an LCD Panel.

Flat-panel LCD
The difference is, that Panasonic plasma is still listed as a plasma while the other one is listed as an LCD in the description and is even an existing model number from Panasonic's Latin America market. I could see BB cutting a deal with Panasonic to import that set exclusively to them.

This guy has ordered one, which is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, so we shall find out soon.
It is interesting that he ordered one, while he is still not very certain if he will receive an LCD or Plasma set.

wunder9 04-22-09, 07:47 PM Here in the Philippines, Panasonic recently introduced this 42" LCD model: http://www.panasonic.com.ph/web/pid/7053
Saw it in action. Very good picture quality.
RandyWalters 04-22-09, 09:13 PM About 3 weeks ago a BB employee in a G10 thread mentioned that BB will be carrying a new 42" Panasonic LCD TV and that they'll be the only retailer in North America to carry it. That was the first time i'd ever heard of it, and now it looks like he was right :)

Panasonic uses the highly rated IPS-Alpha panels in it's 32" and 37" LCD TVs and i've been impressed with their performance (as LCDs go) so it's nice that they're using IPS in this new model.
And the Owners Manual is now available for download (large PDF file):

Patrick. 04-23-09, 08:16 AM Panny LCDs would be interesting if they had better black levels. Their IPS panels offer good viewing angles but the black levels are behind their own plasmas by 2 or 3 generations.
