View Full Version : How can I get my wife to record in HD?

I don't know if I'm the only one with this issue but I'm married to a woman who apparently doesn't see very well. She has this annoying habit of recording shows in SD format instead of HD. I tell her all the time and can't express to her enough how it bugs the crap out of me. I shell out all this cash for the best viewing experience possible for a few minutes each night and she somehow manages to consistently record everything in SD.

I was looking forward to making the switch from Comcast to U-Verse because of all the HD channels offered, the fact that she would be able to program online, and also the HD channels numbers match the SD except you just add a 1 in front. I finally lost it last night when I turned on the TV to find that she had recorded the Office on SD when not only do we get the office in HD but we get it from the station in Miami and the station in West Palm Beach with Uverse.

Anyways, I think I'm going to make it a point to get home early and block out all the SD channels that we get in HD I think that may be the only solution.

Anybody else have this issue with their "better" half or do I have the only HD deficient woman and if so have you been able to cure it and how?

If you have your own TivoHD or Moxi, you simply delete the SD versions of the channels from the guide.

I remember a while back another guy had the same problem with his wife. He said the actually preferred SD over HD, something about HD looking to clear it made her dizzy:eek:
My wife frequently asks if something that's being broadcast is HD or SD:rolleyes:
With my Tivo HD I do as bfdtv said, I only have the HD channels in the guide:D
Of course when I turn the TV on half the time it's on the SD channel and not the Tivo HDMI input:confused: I guess 2 is easier to type than 2.1....

Women tend to be more concerned with the content and not the appearance. It's not that they don't appreciate the better appearance, but as long as the content is there they don't go out of their way to find the best looking channel. That is fortunate, when you think about it, because were it the other way around it is doubtful they would have married us. :)

As bfdtv and jjeff suggested, purge the channel lists of all your equipment of the SD channels where you have an HD simulcast. Then when she finds the content she wants, it's always in HD (if offered).

Let her do what she wants. You spent the money to get HD because you wanted it. Just enjoy it and let her do the same even if it's SD.

Another way to look at it. HER SD recordings will not take up as much precious space on the box needed for YOUR HD content. :D

YMMV

Huh?  Island_Runner, why don't you program your DVR selections yourself?  Problem solved.

Wait! You allow your wife to use the DVR?! Are you mad!?

JK. Seriously though, just switch her from S-Video to HDMI. ;)

HA HA, that would bug the crap outta me. Im glad I have the wife trained (the only thing i was able to train her in) I gotta say though, I agree with the others comments about letting her enjoy tv how she wants, but if its a show you want to see and she is recording it in SD, that would be a pain.

My wife does the same thing!
At least I got her to record the good stuff in HD. All her 10 million Law & Order episodes she can keep in SD

On my Dish Network box you can set it to automatically go to the HD version if available. Also you can set the guide to show HD channels only.

I've definitely had this same problem, as well as a number of others that I won't go into as they are off topic.

It took a while, but she is now cured. It was a slow process, but I think the final episode in the battle was when our daughter-in-law got us a Blu-ray player for Christmas. My wife was now in a position to appreciate the improvement from 480p DVD's to 1080p BD's.

For a while there, I think she actually contended she couldn't tell the difference between SD and HD broadcasts even when she could. It had become a way for her to tease me, I think. I think it was the fact that another woman was now asking if she could tell the difference, and she had to admit she could because otherwise she'd have appeared unappreciative of the gift.

Let me add the disclaimer, though, that I've never been able to fully understand women's behavior, so in this case it's quite likely that my entire analysis is wrong. On the other hand, being a man, I don't really believe I'm wrong, and probably never will.

Actually my wife said she could not see the difference between SD and HD. Then she got cataract surgery and then, Wow she never wanted to watch SD again. Basically, before her cataract surgery her eyes were SD or worse.

Can't you do that on whatever DVR you use?Standalone HDTV DVRs like the TiVo, Moxi, and discontinued Sony allow you to completely remove whatever channels you want from the guide. I have Verizon FiOS + OTA and my program guide lists about 50 channels (favorites filter), only two of which are in SD.

Cable company [provided] DVRs generally do not allow you to remove channels from the guide. They force you to scroll through hundreds of channels, and most do not clearly differentiate between the SD and HD versions.

Can't speak for Direct, as I've never had it, but you can remove any channels you want from my Dish guide.

Your wife knows how to record?!! Mine can barely turn on the home theater, and only can because I got a Harmony remote. (Honey, just press here to turn everything on.)

OK, go ahead and block channel 101..... Not with your favorites, by the way. :)

Boys, boys, boys... Not nice to talk like that about your dearly beloved girls. Let them enjoy nice new TV too. Island Runner, do you really want to upset her every time she records her shows and make her hate "your bloody new TV"?

BTW, I was the one who set everything up and connected all the cables of all the devices, and keep explaining patiently to my husband how to switch the sources so he can watch cable in the morning after we watched DVD the night before and I didn't put it back to the cable. He can't always remember to watch his Fox News in HD, well, I just switch it, and we are both happy.:D
