I just got a Velodyne Impact 12 subwoofer and it seems very low in volume. the volume level is in fact significantly lower than the paradigm I traded in, as well as the Klipsch sub - 10 I returned in order to get this.

I did not touch anything on my receiver since I unplugged my paradigm, but I did notice I had to turn the volume up fairly loud before the sub even recognized a signal.

What should I do...

Turn it up? Really the volume knobs on subs vary that if you NEED to turn it up, TURN THE FRICKING KNOB UP. To put it gently.

Also room acoustics, sub frequency response, etc. all play into this.

Turn it down to around halfway on the sub and adjust it on your receiver.

ok, the DB on the receiver are turned all the way up, the subwoofer frequency is turned up right aboved 80, and the sub volume is turned up all the way. and it is still extremely lower than even my klipsch was, when only turned up half way.

I also have an Impact and love it. Is it connected with a Y adapter as Velodyne recommends? Also, try the Velo support thread in this forum, Curt is great. Good luck.

Robbom, do you notice it is relatively low in volume? or not at all?

Nope. I have the volume at a little below halfway on the sub. Volume at receiver is at about 80%.
Make sure your speakers are set to "small". Does your receiver have auto-cal?

i hate to say this cause you already own it, but i have never heard a velodyne that i was impressed with. my buddy even returned his 2 dd18's cause for the money, they just didn't perform up to par compared with others. i have had a couple velodynes, and both quickly were sold. i'd consider selling that sub and getting something more powerful such as an svs nsd12 maybe? or look on the used market for an hsu vtf3mkii that was one of my best soundign subs for the money ever

well my dealer was able to get me this sub for about 200, so I thought for the money it would be better than the klipsch I could also afford... guess not?

You may be better served to research/ read more & talk a little less. Check the avs sticky threads, lots of good basic info there. And it might be good for you to actually ask questions about specific equipment in the existing owner's threads for that specific equipment.

well i got the Y cable and the sub plays louder. Still lacks compared to the Klipsch in HT, but is far better for music... Maybe I'll stick with it, we'll see.

It is clear you are still not satisfied. Return it and keep looking.

You might try turning it down, now. It can be tricky to judge a sub's volume by ear (if that's what you're doing). Listen for the low bass, move the sub around, try changing the phase, maybe experiment with the sub's crossover control.
