Yes, this is normal. They take your covers like a product return, so they're sent to WB's facility in Michigan. After they process them, WB sends your Blu-ray discs to the address on your order.

I emailed them after Planet Earth was pulled to make sure that I would still be eligible and they did confirm over email that I would still receive it even though it was no longer available at the time. I sent in the covers last week, let's hope the CSR was right.

I sent in my art work on the 23rd. They received it the 28th.

I did send in Artwork for Planet Earth which was pulled from the site(will update once i get the shipment, to see if i actually get planet earth on blu ray)...

I talked to a CSR, they said they have received the art work and my order would ship this week.

Has any one been charged for the transaction yet?

I have not received any information on the shipping status yet..

Just do the "self serve" thing. I went to Office Max and copied them myself for 49 cents each. I asked Kinkos to do it and they would not.

I went to Office Depot on a slow afternoon and used their self-service color copier; a pretty good quality Xerox. They will sell you glossy paper by the sheet too. You want to make sure to inset the original a bit on the glass so it doesn't crop off anything on the copy.

Why would they refuse to make a copy of a DVD cover? You're not breaking any copyright laws.

The original artwork would be gone forever, and the value of the original HD DVD would plummet without it.

How valuable are HD-DVDs right now, even with cover art? With online stores like inetvideo selling HD-DVDs as low as $1.99, I have to argue that they aren't valuable at all anymore.

I wish I hadn't hesitated on this deal, as I would like Planet Earth on Blu-ray. Maybe my HD-DVD is valuable enough that I can sell it and just buy the Blu version, instead.

When Inetvideo sells these for $1.99, it is really making little or nothing, especially with shipping costs. They count on your buying enough discs that cost more to make it worth their while. Personally, I believe that Norbit and similar titles will end up in a landfill somewhere. There just aren't enough HD DVD users to buy all the most common and least wanted discs.

I think a more interesting trend, with Peaceofmindbooks and other vendors, is their selling wholesale lots of certain discs. They know that the handwriting is on the wall, and they are likely to get stuck with this inventory. So they hope they can unload them to individuals with inflated hopes of selling them for a profit.

I agree that values of HD DVD's will plummet no matter what. It just might make the value drop a bit faster this way, especially when so many are trying to sell them.

In the future, the value of any HD DVD will be its usefulness to the owner. In a few months, it may be very hard to unload any HD DVD, with the exception of the more uncommon ones.

They pulled Planet Earth very early in the promotion. I wonder whether Planet Earth on Blu-ray has been discontinued or has been removed from the promotion only.

You will always be able to find buyers for the Planet Earth HD DVD, especially if the Blu-ray version goes out of production as well. You may not get more than $20 for it, but it will never be a $1.99 title.

For many of the discs, however, Blu-ray versions will be available cheaply soon enough; and it might be hard to justify paying an extra $5 -- plus giving up cover art -- for a duplicate that will be discounted in the near future anyway.

For the box sets, especially for those who want to get out of HD DVD while the getting is good, this promotion makes sense.

I thought about selling my Warner cover art (70 discs) or perhaps "upgrading" 25 of them, but even the cost of Canon inkjet cartridges and glossy paper, added to the cost of $5 plus shipping and the loss of the original art, has made me abandon the idea.

I don't think Warner cares any more, but the only real copyright issues would come about with sale or distribution of discs with the fake covers. It will be interesting to see how Ebay and Warner handle this potential problem, especially if sellers don't disclose this in their listings.

I plan on upgrading none of them through this promo. I'll buy used Blu-rays at FYE of these titles when they get cheap enough if I have problems with the movies themselves, I have plenty of players. It would kind of defeat the purpose of having purchased all the cheap titles I did if I were to spend more to "upgrade" them to what is in most cases the same product on a different format. It would be like if some studio suddenly told me I could upgrade my Laserdiscs to DVD if I paid $5 and sent in the sleeves. Having paid $1-1.99 for most of them at a thrift store I'd then invest another $5 a piece bringing the running total up to $7.99 which is likely more than some of them cost on DVD (granted the bulk majority are not available). I guess the same holds true here. Say you paid $7 for the title, then $5 more you're up to $12.

I could see it as a good jumping off point if you didn't buy anything at firesale prices and had a small collection going in, but I must have purchased 100-125 movies or more after HD DVDs got dirt cheap.

As far as other schemes which I won't condone, if you buy an HD DVD off ebay for say $3, spend $3 shipping then another $5, you're up to $11, to save maybe $4 off what they're going for used for most of these older titles assuming you don't use a promo (I can tell you if I buy two used at FYE right now, they're giving an additional 20% off and I use my backstage pass and I'm down to about $10.50 for a good number of these titles $14.30 on the high side).

If many people do this and try and trade them in the used values of the Blu version will be shot, so you'll get nothing at trade and drive the used price dow. Same goes if people print their own cover art and attempt to unload the Blus on ebay you're spending on ink then too, assuming you've got a color laser or something (which I know from experience costs less to do a mass number of color copies).

When all is said and done if too many people attempt to cheat the system and flood the market all that will be done is values of both the HDs and Blus will be next to nothing, new or used.

I have nothing against the promo for someone with a few titles who just wants out its great, I just don't see this being a great business scheme for someone to try and money off of, my guess is once a large number of titles floods the market in either fashion the value will be shot on both sides.

It is Warner that really comes out ahead on this promotion. They get to sell the same title twice. Even at $5 each, they still make a modest profit on each disc.

Don Borvio
05-09-09, 05:56 PM
I like the deal, I get a new Blu-ray for $5, sold most my HD DVDs for $5 - I break even, Warner makes money. And I save money even over buying used (lowest prices I've seen for BDs used for a decent title is like $8-9).

In the future, the value of any HD DVD will be its usefulness to the owner.

Absolutely. But I'd argue that's a reason unto itself to hold onto your movies. Ultimately, the experience for the end user doesn't change whether you're watching the red or blue version of a film. Though HD DVD is no longer in production, your movies and presumably your players will last you the next 10 years. By then, we'll have 2160p 3-D holographic technology, effectively making your bluray collection as worthless as DVDs are today, yet money is being spent to 'upgrade' movies when you have just as good a version already. Why not enjoy your HD-DVD collection and continue to buy cheap disks at a fraction of the cost of their bluray versions? I know at some point the buying will stop because HD DVD is no longer in production, but surely one can amass quite an HD collection, cheaply, and have it last them the next 10 years till the next technology arrives.

That rational is completely illogical. 90% of the DVD's I bought over the past 10 years I still have and still use. Sure I dont buy DVD's any more but then I have 500 physical and 500 ripped DVD's on hard drives (but they are still dvd and dvd quality). I now have about 150 Blue Rays (and 25 Hd-DVD's) and I've replaced maybe 10 of my DVD's with the new Blue Ray versions since they were worth the higher quality. I still have a hard time seeing or believing that most movies that were produced 10+ years ago look must different between dvd and Blueray (you can find the best ones listed in the BR quality ratings pages here).

But name me a single movie coming out right now that is produced in "3-D holographic technology"...

How many movies already produced right now will really look better of they were reproduced at 2160p... maybe a few... especially on a 133" screen which is pretty much what you will need to have to see the real different between 1080p and 2160p.

So in 10 years.. I will still have my DVD's and my Blue Rays and yes, I'll probably be buying the new movies in 2160p 3d.

the difference is by then 100,000 blue Ray movies will be out and you will still be limited to what 300 hd-dvd movies...

Honestly, I don't know what you're getting at here, but what I'm saying is simply, if you already have the HD DVD of say, Batman Begins, what do you gain by trading it in to get the exact same experience with the blu version? Yeah you still have your dvds, any old VHS tapes hanging around the house? Eventually all these things get replaced, I just don't see the logic in replacing perfectly good HD DVDs with blu ray counterparts unless there is a distinct visual/audio/extras improvement. But to each their own.

The other overly optimistic assumption is that your players will last 10 years. Some will maybe, a lot won't. Unless you're talking about stocking up on a few players. But unlike even Laserdisc, no HD DVD players are being made or being planned to at this time. Once they die, they die. Are you going to want to buy a questionable A2 for $500 in a few years? With Blu-ray players at $50 on the cheap end and thousands of more titles available. I know I won't. Although, maybe keep them nice and locked up and sell as museum pieces down the road.

I don't see why the average player wouldn't last that long, I've got a dvd player going on 9 years and works flawlessly. I see your point about not being able to just run to the store and pick up a new HD DVD player, but I don't think stocking up on a backup is a bad idea. You can buy 2 players right now for the price of one BR player. Not sure why an A2 would be $500 in the future. In any event, I'm not some HD DVD fanboy holding on to the past, I actually only have Blu ray. But I've been debating the merits of getting back into HD DVD because the disc prices are so cheap.

Well if you were going to do all that, this year would probably be the time to do it. But, simple supply and demand on why players would raise it price. As HD DVD players die, more people will be looking for them. They'll become somewhat rare, and people will want a premium.
I'm bailing out of HD DVD as a former supporter, I'm tried of the bugs with my BH200 that will never get fixed and I love the PS3. Plus a lot of my HD DVDs where just movies I got on the cheap because they were cheap - I sold them to pay for this Warner deal plus buy back the few movies left that I wanted.

Yeah, that's a fair point. But by that time, perhaps blurays players and movies will be cheap enough that paying premium for an HD DVD replacement(not to mention used and no guarantee to work long itself) negates the cheap HD DVD disc prices now. So yeah, point taken.

Care to elaborate on the bugs with the BH200? I was considering trying to find one on ebay....

The bugs are all here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1080197 It's mostly with HD DVDs. It's still the best combo player out there with what you can do with it (region-free DVD playing, blu-ray region switching).

My sister is still using a DVD player I purchased in 1997. I paid $400 for it. It's a Sony, but it's still going strong. So I like to think that some of the first generation of products are extremely well built and will last a long time. I go back and forth whether to replace most of my HD DVDs, just handful, or just wait until the HD DVDs give up the ghost. I have a stand alone player as well as the 360 add on, so if they last for 10 years, I'll be happy. The handful I would replace are really the ones that I would want to watch at least once a year. Some of the others were ones I picked up when Tower Records was closing, as well as last year when stores were fire selling the HD DVDs.

They had better increase the pace of Blu-ray production if they're going to have 100,000 titles on Blu-ray in ten years. How many are coming out this year and the next, for instance? I would bet that we don't see an average of 10,000 Blu-ray titles per year. Most "less popular" catalog movies will probably never come out on Blu-ray. But, to correct your numbers a wee bit, the actual count of domestic and foreign HD DVD titles actually comes to more than 750 or so.

05-10-09, 10:05 PM
Regardless look at it this way. There might be movies on is williing to buy at a certain price but what if the price never gets there? I have probably 750 laserdiscs I'd never own if I hadn't paid so little, on any format period. The low prices of thes HD DVDs allows a very good experience at a very low price, and a regular DVD won't be the same. Given the prices I'd think for the serious HD material collector, I'd just buy every cheap available title and get them 5 years down the road out of a $5 bin if you like them. If not you've lost next to nothing and chances are you'll still be able to play it. Laserdisc players were not exactly sold in mass quantities afterall but plenty are around. HD DVD players are abound, probably more than enough to satisfy demand. For what its worth my original DVD player from 1998 still works just fine.

750 movies should take a while to collect for anyone who does not buy large quantities of movies every month. I've owned a DVD player for 10 years and not even accumulated 1/3 of that amount.

A large portion of my tiny red collection were either freebies or discounted online specials. (10 free with A3 purchase, $50 BestPry giftcard for buying HDDVD, big-river specials, etc) I got no animosity toward HD DVD. It gave me high-def to enjoy at a low ante.

My reasoning for using Red2Blu is mostly to unify into a single format. The notebook has a blu-ray drive & 1080 screen so begrudgingly switching to blu gives me the option of travelling with high-def.

My order arrived today, so for those awaiting their order my timeframe went like this:

Order placed online Sunday May 3rd. Warner must've been naughty with spamming as their (presumably) blacklisted email caused my confirmation email to show up in the junkmail bin. Check your junkmail folders, folks!

I received mine today as well. My reason was I only have one HD-DVD player and the other day I had issues with it.

My reasoning for using Red2Blu is mostly to unify into a single format. The notebook has a blu-ray drive & 1080 screen so begrudgingly switching to blu gives me the option of travelling with high-def.

My story is the same but in reverse: I've invested in a Toshiba Qosmio laptop with HD-DVD playback (720p screen resolution though, but the HDMI outputs 1920x1080 to my 47" 1080p LCD :)). I'm not getting rid of my XBox 360 add-on or Tosh HD-A20 player anytime soon, so why spend cash buying back movies I already own and plan to watch either home or on the road? Glad you're happy though, it must be thrilling to see a box of Blu-ray's come in without having to spend a fortune buying them all over again (or losing the HD-DVD discs in the process).

I decided to take advantage of this program as well, for the simple reason that the Blu-ray player I have in my HT room provides substantially better audio quality than the Tosh A-35. This situation has caused me to lean toward Blu and away from HD DVD.

Most of the HD DVDs I'll be "upgrading" were promos/freebies anyway, and since the trade-in program allows me to keep the discs, I'll just move them to the guest wing, where there is an HDTV with HD DVD player.

Seems like a win/win scenario. I really hope the other two HD DVD providers put out a similar program.

Maybe, I just think we're over this stuff now or at least hope we are. Shoot I've got two HD players and love it. I've got two blu players and love it. And as a quick estimate I've probably got 200 hd dvds and 200 blu dvds and they all look unbelievable. As prices continue to just completely drop on HDs I continue to buy what I like. And as movies that I like come out on blu then once again they are added to my collection.

I'm pretty much like a kid in a candy store and thrilled with what's available out there right now.

Well. I've watched just about all 7 that I traded for and I am a bit disappointed. A few things:

1) It looks like they may be using stock that could not go to stores. Why? Because 2 of the Bluray cases I got were broken.

2) The disks are simply the movies and nothing else. You stick them in and their is no menu's and such.. they simply start playing.

3) Quality: so far my PS3 on all of them has reported that they are playing in standard DD 5.1. The movies are defiantly not as well translated to Hd then most of the others I have (see the BluRay movie tier thread here on AVS). For example, 300 just did not look like it should (watched last night). The quality is barely over DVD on most my disks.

But... for $5 I guess its a good deal. I would NOT buy any of these movies full priced or even discounted 1/2 off from a store.

this is how warner does it... you had the HD DVDs you should know this... the movie starts playing automatically you can access the menu at any time by pressing MENU on the remote

LOLWUT?

seriously are you looking at the back of the case? any of them that were DD+ only on HD DVD will be DD only on bluray...
also are you using HDMI for audio?
does your receiver accept PCM over HDMI?
are you set to bitstream instead of PCM in the PS3 audio options?

also the video encodes are exactly the same as the HD DVDs....

There are menus, they just don't default to them. You can access this via the remote/controller.

Yeah, I don't get the griping there - I wish everyone did it like Warner. Straight to the movie! Not make me flip through a dozen frackin previews before the movie! I'm looking at you Paramount/Disney! Who cares when this disc becomes a couple years old anyway? Hey, look - coming to blu-ray, Pirates of the Caribbean 3! *sigh*

300 is great PQ, and the transfer is identical on BD or HD DVD. There's artificial grain that's intentional, but that's it. If you can't tell the difference, either your screen is terrible, you're too far from the screen, or your eyes are faulty. Maybe some combination of those. Possibly a faulty BD player, figure it out, don't blame the format.

I had the same problem. I sent in for a total of 22 titles. USPS showed that the disc covers were received two days after I mailed them but I only received the first six replacement titles on my list.

I called into their customer service and was told they only showed the first six covers a being received, however the rep told me she would check with her supervisor. The rep called back two days later and said they could not find the rest of the covers but that they were sending out the balance of the movies on my list anyway and I would not be charged for any additional shipping.

All things considered, I must say that I am pleased with the way things played out. I understand stuff sometimes happen. But at the end of the day they made everything right. And the reps that I talked to over the phone were very polite and helpfull.

ultimate matrix collection....

if you have the complete matrix trilogy they will upgrade so you get the animatrix and all the bonus features

if you have the ultimate matrix collection then the upgrade comes from the animatrix being in HD

beyond that...

nobody has confirmed yet which version of polar express they got back... i emailed about it and was told it would likely be the original release with just the 2D version and the DD audio

harry potter and the order of the phoenix has all bonus features in 1080p plus some extra bonus material BUT you lose the IME and the web enabled features

if your HD DVD player can't do DTS-HD but your bluray player can then Pan's Labyrinth is a small upgrade

i can't remember if they are accepting Full Metal Jacket first release in exchange for the deluxe edition if so that's an upgrade due to better transfer and lossless audio

beyond that...
I picked up the HD DVD standard collection at a good price ($22) and a used SD DVD version of Animatrix reasonably cheap. Since I'm not all that engaged with the later two films, or Animatrix, I'll have to think about that one.

nobody has confirmed yet which version of polar express they got back... i emailed about it and was told it would likely be the original release with just the 2D version and the DD audio If there's no change, my HD DVD has that covered.

harry potter and the order of the phoenix has all bonus features in 1080p plus some extra bonus material BUT you lose the IME and the web enabled features
I like the IME and other standard HD DVD features. I've picked up the individual HP films on BD (also have HD DVD covered), so is there a difference between the BD box set and the individual titles (thinking only of the bonus features)?

if your HD DVD player can't do DTS-HD but your bluray player can then Pan's Labyrinth is a small upgrade I originally went with the HD DVD of that based on apparent DNR applied to the BD version, however, I since read it was applied to both the HD DVD and BD versions, only the HD DVD import was clean. So, I wonder if I'm actually better off getting the import! However, either way, I'm unable to fully decode DTS-HD MA via any of my HD DVD players. That would require a future BD player purchase.

i can't remember if they are accepting Full Metal Jacket first release in exchange for the deluxe edition if so that's an upgrade due to better transfer and lossless audio
I held out for the re-release of that on HD DVD, so I should be OK there.

Again, thanks very much for taking the time to provide what seems a pretty encompassing response :)!

I ordered 300, The Departed, Goodfellas, Planet Earth, and A Christmas Story. All are shown as available on WBshop.com and listed as ships within 1 day. I will try to call them tomorrow.

Ditto. Just got the generic "it's on hold" yesterday. I'm assuming it is the Casablanca that is holding up given the comments here. I got confirmation of them receiving it back on May 28th. Wish they could handle just doing a partial order.

My list is below (to help see if there is any other pattern):

Ultimate Matrix Collection, The (BD)
2001: A Space Odyssey: Special Edition (BD)
300 (BD)
Batman Begins (BD)
Blade Runner: Complete Collector's Edition (BD)
Casablanca, Ultimate Collector's Edition (BD)
Goodfellas (BD)
Harry Potter 1-5 Limited Edition Giftset (BD)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (BD)
Shining, The: Special Edition (BD)
Superman Returns (BD) (TrueHD Audio)
Training Day (BD)
V for Vendetta (BD)
Pan's Labyrinth (BD)

Just got off the phone with them. It looks like it was Planet Earth holding up my order. The CSR however told me that it had shipped today and that I was the first she had seen with Planet Earth shipping. She said the other hold up was Casablanca, not one I had ordered.

Hmm, I can upgrade quite a few titles for $99.95. I even came up with a solution to replace the original cover art once I send it in. But there's a better version of 300 coming out in 2-3 weeks. It's a digibook, but it has the same specs as the HD DVD version, whereas the original 300 BD release was missing some of the cool features (like PiP Green Screen).

Is it possible WB might drop in the 300 Digibook version once it's released? The had The Matrix digibook on there for a while.

I have a 360 HD DVD Player unit. I'm slowly migrating my HD DVD collection over to Blu-ray. Esp. since they don't make the HD DVD Player unit anymore and the 360's successor won't have the HD DVD software in it (assuming it's a waste of Microsoft's time/money to implement).

Still love my PS3 as a Blu-ray player though. :D

contact them about it... because the bluray of 300 they are sending is a downgrade they SHOULD start sending the new version as soon as it's released but it doesn't mean they will

Checked the website and Casablanca says ships within 1 day (http://www.wbshop.com/Casablanca%3a-Ultimate-Collector+s-Edition/1000039793,default,pd.html?cgid=). Thank you for your order from Red2Blu.com and for sending in your cover art.

Unfortunately, we had hoped to give you the CASABLANCA COLLECTORS EDITION, but we have run out of stock of these limited edition Blu-ray titles and we do not expect to receive more inventory in time to fulfill your order. We have removed this item from your order.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Accordingly, we will include a complimentary CASABLANCA Blu-ray disc with your order. As we have rushed to have these new Blu-ray discs prepared and sent to you as an apology, the Blu-ray will not be shrink-wrapped.

Once again, please accept our sincere apologies. We will notify you when your order ships. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

So the jokers were right, we are getting the single disc but at least it's free. They cancelled the Matrix orders though, but someone on HDD got an email that he's getting only the Matrix (which really should've never been an option) and no Casablanca. Good ol WB, always an adventure. Whether sending out a whole crate of Entourage, shipping me Blade Runner in a huge box with no padding, or this stuff - it's a laugh a minute.

Well I'm in. Initially I balked when Planet Earth was off the list before I had time to place my order but with that back as an option I'll give it a shot. I was hesitant given all the negative posts but 7 blus for $70 that include PE and Ultimate Matrix is worth trying.

Planet Earth: The Complete Collection (BD) $14.95
Ultimate Matrix Collection, The (BD) $19.95
Shining, The: Special Edition (BD) $4.95
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (BD) $4.95
2001: A Space Odyssey: Special Edition (BD) $4.95
Blazing Saddles (BD) $4.95
Pan's Labyrinth (BD) $4.95

FYI, I called Red2Blue last week after I got an email saying I would receive Casablanca for free but not the Matrix (It didn't say I wouldn't; it just said the item wasn't available). When I called, they said there was a problem with the emails (some said you would get casablanca and not matrix, and others said the opposite), and both Casablanca and the Matrix were supposed to come. She also said the discs would come unsealed, which makes me think they're going to come in a sleeve. For free I guess I can't complain, although I lost my cover art (they won't send back obviously). Incidentally, on my shipping confirmation email I received today, it says the Ultimate Matrix Trilogy, where I just sent in the single Matrix movie....I'll report back as to what I received. I was really looking forward to the Casablanca boxed set......

Exactly the same for me but I got my entire shipment together-- this morning. And, as I got in really early-- noon of the first day the deal was made,-- I also got my Planet Earth BR.
Single disc on the Casablanca also-- no charges. No problem here but I wish the documentary on Jack Warner was included-- but I'm not complaining.

It took awhile but Warners lived up to the bargain for me. And I'm very pleased! :)

Got all my discs on Friday and the Casablanca is what everyone else got, single disc (Ultimate Matrix wrapped and was part of my original order, not a consolation) . This is fine with me though as that is all I had on HD-DVD, this was about replacing the HD-DVD's BR's (not upgrading), and we didn't pay for it. Not happy about the months it took but happy they did something to attempt to make it right vs. just flipping us the bird is more commonly the experience.
Now off to put the HD Animatrix on my WHS.. :)

Finally doing my Red 2 Blu today. I didn't do all my WB titles, as some of them were purchases when Tower was closing and when stores were fire selling HD DVDs. Those are ones I'll probably only watch one or two more times and they will then sit on the shelf. But for the "can't miss" movies, even if I unload them on eBay or Half.com for $1 or $2 it will have been worth the upgrade.

I don't see myself using the DVD2blu. I have a lot of comedies and those are movies that don't thing really need an HD transfer. And again, their current collection is week anyway.

My turn around time was two and half weeks from shipping to receiving. Pleasently surprised...I was expecting six to eight weeks. I have one more title to replace and my red to blue migration will be complete. I will probably pick up the last title at Wal-Mart this weekend. The HD-DVD player will come out of the rack and go on eBay with all the movies. I really wanted that format to win back in the day. Oh well, I am 100% Blu now.

Hope my turn around is that quick. They received my covers on Tuesday, so with any hope they will arrive by Christmas.

And thanks for a great idea on getting rid of my HD DVD player. I'm having a hard time selling HD DVDs on Half.com, so selling a bundle might yield me a few bucks. If I put it up many as an upverting DVD player with "bonus HD DVD features" I might get more money!

I sent off eight covers to Red2Blu on 12/19. They acknowledged receiving them on 12/30; the discs were shipped on 1/4, and arrived today. So - a bit less than three weeks start to finish. I'm impressed, considering the holidays likely added several days to the process.

BTW - I just noticed that the Red2Blu web site is still active, and appears to still allow orders to be placed. Their program rules claim that the HD-DVD to Blu-ray conversion program would end on 12/31/09. Does anyone know how much longer this will be active?

According to the program rules document (http://www.red2blu.com/library/r2b_rules.pdf) on the site (deciphering the legalese), since the program wasn't "terminated" before 12/31/09 it ended on 12/31/09. The deadline for sleeves arriving at WB's processing center(s) for any outstanding orders placed before that date is January 21 (which reminds me I actually have an outstanding order I need to ship labels out for). Anybody feeling lucky enough to try to place a new order?

Not sure why you think PCM is a step down; I know some people prefer it, but...

TrueHD is lossless compression, so the resulting sound would be equivalent to an uncompressed PCM track.

FWIW, the term "uncompressed" when applied to PCM is pure marketing BS. The reality is that it's PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation), which is inherently uncompressed -- that tack on word is totally redundant.

DTS-HD Master and Dolby TrueHD, are both lossless compression formats that typically encode from PCM master tracks. So, basically, when you have PCM encoded on your disk, you are simply bypassing some additional processing, not compromising the sound. In all three formats, the resulting sound is lossless and given identical original PCM masters, the final sound will also be identical (though final recording levels may differ and so comparison requires accurate volume setting to match the levels.)

Wonder why 'Ucompressed PCM' titles are AQ rated lower then ones that have TrueHD & DTS-MA in the blu-ray forum?

No comparison between codecs (or PCM) is valid unless the samples are sourced from the same audio master and accurately level matched during playback (also turning off such audio modifying functions as dialog normalization). The remaining qualifier would be that the digital to analog decoding chain is consistent. For example, DTS-HD Master decoded at the player and output via player analog jacks (then to the receiver) doesn't necessarily sound the same as the identical tracks bitstreamed to a receiver via HDMI and decoded there.

Accurately comparing two lossless tracks from the same disc title isn't trivial, and such discs are relatively rare. Comparing tracks between different titles is impossible, but some people try to do that anyway. That's like comparing red and green and saying which is the better color.

Some of the titles can be picked up now new for $10 or less on Blu-Ray, so you won't be out too much if you "upgrade" them yourself. Also, remember this is for Warner Bros movies only. And, I saw Superman Returns at a Five Below store on Blu-Ray, so you you'd actually be better buying it right from them rather than losing you HD DVD cover.

Going off FMDW's post above and my own experience (I finally got around to shipping labels for an order I placed last year, which arrived on 1/22, and is being processed)...is WB just keeping R2B alive on the D.L. or are they in "We'll pull the plug any minute now, as soon as we remember to do it" mode?

I'd say WB budgetted a specific amount to pay for Red2Blu program, and assumed that it would run out or be very closed by the end of 2009. I guess it wasn't as close as they thought, so WB figured they'd keep it alive longer. Since it's now after the scheduled end date, it'll just be one day it's up, then poof, it's gone.
