Just a question. I don't know if there is a thread on this subject if so please point me in the right direction and let this thread die. What is the purpose of using fabric on the walls in a theater/media room? Is it for accoustic reasons only or are there light absorption characteristics as well? Also what are the ideal placements of fabric? The whole wall, upper or lower etc? Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

GOM is Guilford of Maine fabric and it is used to cover acoustical sound treatment applied to the walls, Most often one inch of compressed (dense) fiberglass insulation. Some people put it on the walls directly just for looks. In of itself is has minimal acoustical benefit.
Visit Chinadog's build thread and his linked photo albums for detailed information on installation.
Some of the GOM products are acoustically transparent (think speaker grill covers) and can be used to build columns hiding speakers and to build false front walls hiding speakers and bass traps. My walls and front wall are all GOM.
Dark colors of fabric also help control reflections in the room.
