View Full Version : DVD/BD splitscreen demo discs?
sremick 04-22-09, 12:44 PM I poked through all the pages on this subforum... sorry if this has been asked before.
I'm looking for some sort of DVD/BD "demo disc" with clips from well-known/big/blockbuster movies shown in splitscreen (SD-DVD quality on one side, Blu-Ray on the other) for showing off my system to people who swear they don't see a difference between the two formats. I've seen such titles put on loop and used in retail stores. The closest thing out there I've found was the "Experience Blu" disc, which I picked up v2.2 recently. But what a waste... the part that contained what I'm looking for amounted to just a few seconds. I'm hoping for something longer.
Any suggestions?
Stinky-Dinkins 04-22-09, 01:12 PM How does that work?
So on one side of the screen they simulate 480i... do they simulate it as it would appear as if were upscaled with a competent player (like an Oppo 983) or would they do a hack job of it? That doesn't really seem like an accurate representation of DVD quality video to me.
They best way to do it would be to use your DVD player, assuming you still have one able to be hooked up to your TV, and assuming you have a copy of a movie on both DVD and BluRay that is known for being of high quality on both formats. Could just play a 30 second clip from one format and switch over and play the identical clip on the other format.

That doesn't really seem like an accurate representation of DVD quality video to me.No, it's not going to be completely "accurate" and I'm totally with you that the upscaled quality depends on the DVD player used.
However, I'd settle for a simulated "average" or general "run of the mill" upscaled image. Or even a native (albeit deinterlaced) zoomed 480p image without any fancy upscaling. Since the point is to demonstrate the difference in formats, not upscaling abilities of various players.
(Worth noting is that I used to own an OPPO 983).

Could just play a 30 second clip from one format and switch over and play the identical clip on the other format.Something I've done for myself and my eyes can easily pick that out. But some people don't "see" it unless you can do a simultaneous side-by-side.
It's not perfect, but I know they're out there somewhere... just trying to track one down. :)
Stinky-Dinkins 04-22-09, 01:58 PM This site lists a bunch of demo DVD's and if you click on them it shows you how many segments and which ones are split screen:

(like this one http://www.demo-world.eu/demo-dvds/sphe-2008-international-blu-ray-demo.php looks like it would have a couple good split screen segments of Casino Royale.)
Don't know if you knew about that site, but maybe having the specific names of the discs will make it easier for you to track down the specific ones you want. They have a buy/sell forum there too, have never visited it but that might make it easier too.

muffinmcfluffin 04-24-09, 12:14 PM I think something like this is actually what you were looking for:

It's the thing with the voice over that explains everything. Look at the array of these demo discs and you may find something.
Hell, I want one too.
Maxx_75 04-24-09, 02:13 PM These demo disks are so fake it isnt even funny. I especially like the one that shows 120hz on one side and 60hz on the other. That must be a pretty special tv to have a different refresh rate on each side of the monitor !

You don't need a demo disc for that. If you have a 120 Hz TV (at least with Samsung), you can choose to turn it on, off, or set it to demo. You'll see the same thing.
interesting.
im trying to figure out if they sell these at all, particularly the pioneer ones. i LOVE those demo disc.

Does anyone know where you can buy a good demo BD disc that includes movie and concert scenes as well as music? This would need a sampling of latest audio codecs as well. Thanks.

The point he was making is that you CAN'T do that with a demo disc..
I have to agree.. these 'demo discs' have a pretty strong agenda so I can't see them being fair in any way.
Was_There_Then 05-04-09, 07:47 PM I have this one: http://www.demo-world.eu/demo-dvds/experience-blu-1-international.php
That has the simulated split screen between 'DVD' and BD (compares Kingdom of Heaven & A Knights Tale)
