Alruban 04-22-09, 01:55 PM Is it still does not support Arabic Subtitle

IT's rolling
no tweet for this release?
wicker_man 04-22-09, 02:44 PM Well, as i said on another thread, but wil repeat here since this is the place to say it, here are some superficial notes regarding this new firmware:
Indeed there is now an option to have subs to auto appear or not. That's the end of that war!
Indeed one now can choose between thin outline and thick. Personally, i think the thin one is too thin for CRTs but the thick one is PERFECT (IMHO) for CRTs, therefore, we old timers are covered in that topic. OTOH, Plasmas and LCDs may find the thin one ok (or perhaps too thin... what do you say?) and the thick one too thick. I dunno.
I haven't yet tested the "hard drive spindown on WDTV power off".
Still, the problem with the flashing greek subs still exists (don't know what this is? check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxd2szpjeu0 ), unfortunately. I can't comment on the 2 or 3 characters that were incorrectly rendered, cause i don't read or speak greek, and can't remember their shape! :D
a big jerk 04-22-09, 02:50 PM I noticed a new bug today on .06, don't know if it was fixed in this new version (about to install it, wish me luck).
I tried to resume a movie, and it was all black, but the progress bar kept going. It was Buster Keaton in The Genearal, located at archive.org for free.
So I quit the movie, tried to play it again, and it said it was unsupported. Every other movie was being considered "unsupported" as well, when I decided to eject. Eject hung for a very long time, so I had to manually force it to shut off. After a rescan, losing my thumbnails and movie positions, I went back to the part of the movie where I left off by skipping ten-minute intervals. Scared the crap out of me.
expeditionaire 04-22-09, 02:51 PM I posted my opinion of 1.02.07 in other thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16319706#post16319706), let me copy it here :)
"My opinion about 1.02.07 subtitles: another little step forward. Great.
I still think that would be great if we could too toggle between a thin and a bold font, not only a thin one. Also, the bold outline is poor rendered, rude, IMHO. A little smoother would be perfect.
And one more thing: when I pause/play a movie, the info bar appears a few seconds... during that seconds I can't read the subtitles, the bar is over them. Do you think is necessary or appropriate that this bar appears after push play button?
Thank you!"
This firmware is even faster in disk recognition... Great!!!
Thx GuyWD and ScottWD!!
We just need now is Autodetect framerate! And then the WD TV is perfect!!!!
wicker_man 04-22-09, 02:54 PM Where are my manners?
Thank you Scott, Guy and all at WD!
How rude of me to forget that!
23,97fps options don't Works fine.
poor quality image!
matthaus 04-22-09, 02:58 PM Scott, Guy and everyone at WD thanks a tonne for the awesome support in pumping out those fw updates. Great to see and its this top notch support (not being forgotten about) that makes me want to buy Western Digital again in the future. WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fred_be9300 04-22-09, 03:07 PM cool! I left on a trip with 1.02.03 on my WDTV (which stayed home) and now I'm home and can install 1.02.07 already :)
Thanks WD. And thanks especially for the many-times-requested features in 1.02.07. It should prove to many here that you're really listening to the community.
In return, the community promises to stop bitching and nagging.
Euhm. wait.
Somebody's whispering in my left ear that I can't make that promise. Oh well ;-)

hehheh . well as long as its constructive criticism then I am sure WD will welcome it. Constructive criticism is what is needed and will see the firmware being a success in the longrun. Bitching and nagging and even abuse will not help and make things worse in my view. So far the community from what I have read has been pretty damn good. Sure there have been a few bugs and things are not perfect (they never are). But that is what it is all about trying to improve it step by step until it shines. It is great that people are putting in their 2 cents and giving ideas of what they want and what should be fixed. The crew at WD are doing a awesome job in my view with their approach and response to this. WELL DONE AGAIN!!!!!!
stlobsvr 04-22-09, 03:16 PM A huge relief to again be able to turn off (or on) subtitles (Thank you WD Guys), but.....it's still FULL TITLING or NONE. No FORCED SUBTITLES, displaying only when the characters speak in a foreign or alien language.
I hope this remains on the "It's being worked on list"
THANKS WD! This firmware seems to directly address community issues/suggestions. I love all these updates!
Thanks WDteam!
Now WDTV is 98% perfect!
1% is for fps, and auto-detect frame-rate work!
1% for Black levels WorK!
perfecblue 04-22-09, 03:26 PM Just wanted to say my thanks to everyone in WD working hard on keeping this media player the best at its value and listening to the community feedbacks through each update.
Thanks again for all the great work!
Can you guys confirm that your drives spin down when your WDTV is powered off, and that they spin back up when it's powered on? If you can note what kind of drive you're using (brand and model), that would also be very helpful.
Thanks again. Your feedback is invaluable.
Very interested to hear if anyone has tested if audio sync is still off on some .mkv and .avi files using direct HDMI connection to TV? I know using HDMI pass-thru or optical via a receiver gets around the problem but that's not an option for me and, I assume, many people.
Cheers :)
matthaus 04-22-09, 03:29 PM Anyone tested the harddrive spindown on WD TV power off? I am curious to hear about the results. Thanks.
Dion250 04-22-09, 03:42 PM Ya for Subtitle default off support. Thank You WDTV team you guys rock.
ghosts_owner 04-22-09, 03:44 PM For me only one functionality is remained.
DVD Menu support for VIDEO_TS folder and iso files.
thanks scottwd and guywd !!!
You guys are listening to users !!!
Other companies should take lesson from you guys.
Thanks!

My 2,5 Lacie 250GB spins down, with eject and/or with power off :D
Will try later with my WD 2.5 320GB, but that one span down with 1.2.06 already...

i´m pretty sure 3.5" hdd can be issued a command to spin them down, though i might be mistaken.
MrBillD 04-22-09, 04:07 PM Just curious as to why someone would opt to eject the HD if just powering off the WDTV causes a spindown?
MrBacardi 04-22-09, 04:09 PM Can you guys confirm that your drives spin down when your WDTV is powered off, and that they spin back up when it's powered on? If you can note what kind of drive you're using (brand and model), that would also be very helpful.

With 1.02.07:
WD Elements 1TB spindown og spinup works correctly.
MrBacardi 04-22-09, 04:15 PM I noticed a new bug today on .06, don't know if it was fixed in this new version (about to install it, wish me luck).

I've also experienced something similar, but with 1.02.07 just earlier today.
I was testing if various material would play, and then just suddenly all the videoclips on all USB-devices went "Unsupported". Could not playback any material that worked earlier. I had to do a "reset to factory default" to get it playing again (I did not try to unplug power then, that might also have worked). Now everything works fine again, and I'm unable to provoke the error.
There's no need to eject your drives prior to powering down the WDTV. Both 2.5" and 3.5" drives should spin down.

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition WD10000H1Q-00 1Tb
- WDTV power off: spin down
- WDTV power on: spin back up
Western Digital My Passport Essential WD3200ME 320Gb
- WDTV power off: spin down
- WDTV power on: spin back up
So, it's working as it should using prerelease 1.02.07.

i had this problem and i actually downgraded to 1.01.02. i may try .07 though and see if it fixed this.. i didnt have any problem in .04
moolala 04-22-09, 04:26 PM Thanks WDteam!
Now WDTV is 98% perfect!

98% might be a stretch, but all the little "presents" are nice.
Unless it was recently added without comment...it would be real nice (as prev stated) to have the AAC 5.1 downconversion output through the digital ports (since at present the player outputs NOTHING when set to DIGITAL)...has to be simple (because it does it already if you select STEREO) and benefit is immense, otherwise you have to run back and forth (and back and forth...) to change the setting manually, not only to watch one with AAC, but to change it back after for the ones that are not AAC. (PCH has menus for this I think, but even just to default to the 2ch analog through the digital ports would be more than fine by me)...OR...output the analog signal through the RCA even if DIGITAL is selected.
Guy ??
Out of curiousity...anybody still having elusive problems when external drive is filled too close to capacity, or is that something WD quietly resolved ?
ENJOY...moo
ok thanks for the information

WD Elements and WD My Book Essential Edition (1TB each) both spin down when the WDTV is powered off and spin back up when its powered on. Thanks again for your continued support on such a great product.
Tut_Ank 04-22-09, 04:32 PM Thanks WDteam!
Now WDTV is 98% perfect!
1% is for fps, and auto-detect frame-rate work!
1% for Black levels WorK!
I'll say 90%
Ill take off an additional 3% for for not honoring the default track flag
Ill take off an additional 5% for for not downmixing DTS
Edit: 86%
Ill take 1% Off because the bug of the subtitles dissapearing when you move the picture to the top of the screen (a workaround that works is: AFTER moving the image without touching the subtitles rewind a little bit and hit play again subtitles will return while the picture is still at the top of the image)
2% for not remembering the tracks selected when resume playing (this will be only 1% off if the flags where horored)
1% off because when moving the picture the keys work exactly the opposite way as what intuition says(the up key moves the picture down and viceversa is like they move the TV and the image remains stil, but the tv set is not movedl)
There's no need to eject your drives prior to powering down the WDTV. Both 2.5" and 3.5" drives should spin down.
Sorry but my Lacie Neil Poulton 3.5 750Gb does not spin down after i turn off the WD TV. :(
Monkeyface66 04-22-09, 04:33 PM Fixed items:
* Added option to toggle subtitle default to 'On' or 'Off'
* Added subtitle outline thickness selection
* Added hard drive spindown on WDTV power off
The 1.02.07 firmware is really the best firmware among all other pre-release firmwares concerning the newly added features :)
It's just three new items, but three GOOD ones.
Thanks WD!
HOWEVER, I think the majority of all NON-Englisch speaking people are still not going to be satisfied with the new "Subtitle: ON / OFF" feature BECAUSE it would be more comfortable if there were TWO checkboxes:
1) Auto load EXTERNAL subtitles: ON or OFF.
2) Auto load EMBEDDED subtitles: ON or OFF.
"Why?" you may ask...
Because of TV shows!
When you are going to watch a new episode of your favourite TV show, you usually put an external subtitle matching the exact name of the video file next to your video file and when watching then episode, you WANT the subtitle to Auto-load.
You might want to ask now, "Why don't you just enable auto loading of subtitles then?"
Because on the other hand, when you are going to watch a cinema movie with EMBEDDED subtitles, you usually DON'T WANT the subtitle to auto-load because the movie you are going to watch is already in your native language and the embedded subtitles are just optional.
So, PLEASE add TWO subtitle CHECKBOXES, WD! :)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Embedded subtitles which have the "default track flag" (usually "forced subtitles") are another story and should always be auto-loaded,
no matter what you choose in the two subtitle checkboxes!
.
cutthatcity 04-22-09, 04:35 PM so not only did it not fix my few .avi files that have studdering video, it still played some of my .mkv files with the audio starting about a second to late and making the whole thing out of sync
badmania98 04-22-09, 04:36 PM My 2,5 Lacie 250GB spins down, with eject and/or with power off :D
Will try later with my WD 2.5 320GB, but that one span down with 1.2.06 already...
I have also a 2.5 Lacie 250GB HDD and it doesnt spins down at eject or power off. Strange.
And YES, Thank YOU WD Team, for your job.
ripper2860 04-22-09, 04:36 PM Can you guys confirm that your drives spin down when your WDTV is powered off, and that they spin back up when it's powered on? If you can note what kind of drive you're using (brand and model), that would also be very helpful.

Have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 640GB and 1TB connected via powered USB hub and they both spin-down at WDTV power-off and spin-up on WDTV power-on. The new .07 firmware is definitely getting close to achieving my expectations for this $99.00 beauty.
<Sorry guys -- I had the Seagate's before I bought the jewel that is my WDTV> :o
Only quirk in my limited testing is that hand-shaking is still an issue. On occasion at power-up I receive "INVALID FORMAT" or the main screen shows "scrunched-up" on the left 1/4th of the screen with over-scan looking lines (LCD's don't actually scan -- I think). Seems it's not auto-negotiating properly and selecting an resolution/frequency that is not supported by my TV. 1 or 2 power-off/power-on cycles via remote and all is OK. Been happening since .03.
Almost forgot -- Thanks WD DEV Team. You guys RAWK!!!!
I just request more zoom out options for the crt owners like me who suffer from overscanning.

.
There is no need for the external subtitles flag, they should be on by default, or maybe a default language subtitle if present will be a choice there
Also honoring the default track flag will remove the need for the subtitle selection ON/OFF that way forced subtitles will be on while the rest are off by default.
Also the track name is always in English regardless of your language selection on settings it stil says English, German, Castilian where it should say Englisch, Deutsch or Spanisch if the selection is German or Inglés, Alemán or Español if the selection is Spanish, or at least each label in the language it represents, English, Deutsch or Español...

Thanks GuyWD for these updates. I can confirm that my WD My Book Essential 1TB now spins down with a WDTV power off! This drive has an external power source, but it still spins down with this new firmware.
All that I could ask for now is DVD menu/chapter support in ISO files.

without passing judgement on why you feel this picture moving is so important in the first place, the reason it works the way it does is because it is a "panning" feature...ie you're panning to look at something on the left of the shot, which means the picture as a whole has to move to the right to accommodate...visualize that and maybe it will come more naturally for you...I don't see them changing this.
a big jerk 04-22-09, 04:57 PM Confirming my December-bought WD750GB External MyBook spins down. Very nice.
Looking to see if it is possible to include an option to not view any text/movie position info at the start of a movie.
Tut_Ank 04-22-09, 04:58 PM Thanks GuyWD for these updates. I can confirm that my WD My Book Essential 1TB now spins down with a WDTV power off! This drive has an external power source, but it still spins down with this new firmware.

Yes, I forgot that one, DVD Menu support and also to thank the WD TEAM
Thanks a lot guys, sorry for the points off, but you are on the right track now...
apd-yannis 04-22-09, 05:02 PM My older LaCie 1TB took 40 secs to be recognised and less than 10 to be scanned!. It also spinned down nicely at eject.
The thick border is acceptable in both greek and english subs on my Panny 37px80.
The "flashing subs" issue with greek chars still there.
The accented A and badly designed characters (thita, delta, final s etc) are still with us.
Didn't have enough time for more tests. Keep up the good work guys.
Tut_Ank 04-22-09, 05:03 PM without passing judgement on why you feel this picture moving is so important in the first place, the reason it works the way it does is because it is a "panning" feature...ie you're panning to look at something on the left of the shot, which means the picture as a whole has to move to the right to accommodate...visualize that and maybe it will come more naturally for you...I don't see them changing this.
This is working on the oficial version and in the beta one after you rewind a bit. The reason to do this is for widescreen movies, so you can move them to the top of the screen to have a big black blosk at the botton instead of one black stripe at the top and anothe one at the bottom, then you can see the subtitles in the botton black block without hidding part of the picture with them (also avoiding subtitles to oberlap with other subtitles that might be embeded in the picture).
Again, this is not happening on the oficial versions, only on the beta subtitles dissapear if you move the picture up and it was a nice feature for widescreen movies.
If you refer to why the up key moves the picture down, I understand what you say, but its just the opposite that you expect, you select the icon to move the picture, press OK, then hit the up arrow and the image moves down...

I must vigorously disagree with you here, Mface! I don't know about your country, but in Portugal, my country (although i live in Spain) we see films as they were shot, not dubbed in other voices.
Here in Spain there are still a lot of "paletos" that see dubbed versions, but not me, nor many others!
If a film is from Austria (hi Haneke!) we see it in German, not dubbed. ;)
The honouring of the flags in mkvs is the correct solution, imho. It will say to the WDTV: "Do what i'm saying, for that is what my creator (that's you, monkeyface) wants).
wicker_man 04-22-09, 05:11 PM I just request more zoom out options for the crt owners like me who suffer from overscanning.
+1 (does my girlfriend count too? If so, it's +2!) But it's zoom in, isn't it? ;)
2............
If you have a simple workaround (take 1seg), that i use, is not a bug to take 1%:D
For, Downmix DTS you must undertand that is a very $$$ deal.
I thing the playback features, like fps,...auto detect frame rate, and quality playback, must be the next STEP TO THE WORK of WDteam
wicker_man 04-22-09, 05:14 PM Also honoring the default track flag will remove the need for the subtitle selection ON/OFF that way forced subtitles will be on while the rest are off by default.
...and that may be nice and dandy for subs placed inside mkv, but please remember that most of us have, errr, made copies of our legally owned movies for several years now, and most of them are, therefore, avi, not mkv.
The option to choose auto on / auto off + always honour flag seems to me to be the most inclusive and correct.
wicker_man 04-22-09, 05:16 PM Hi all,
I have a problem with a mkv file containf a vc-1 stream. After a few seconds playing it just stops with a black screen.
any thoughts?
Codec ID : WVC1
Could it be the WVC1 video codec?

Hey, i was unaware of this workaround, sweet, thanks!
wicker_man 04-22-09, 05:18 PM Looking to see if it is possible to include an option to not view any text/movie position info at the start of a movie.
Indeed, i fully agree. It's a nag to see info that i do not want to see, and if i do, i only have to press enter on my remote :)
Hey, i was unaware of this workaround, sweet, thanks!
hehee...

Well a workaroud is something that you have to do to overcome a bug, having a workaround doen't fix the problem, is still there..
I don't know how very $$$ is the deal. More than the 40 additional $ that we paid for the device here in Europe? doen't that coner the licence for European customers?
Tut_Ank 04-22-09, 05:26 PM ...and that may be nice and dandy for subs placed inside mkv, but please remember that most of us have, errr, made copies of our legally owned movies for several years now, and most of them are, therefore, avi, not mkv.

you can always mux them in a mkv container, it takes the same time to copy the file to the external HDD as to odrag and drop the avi and the srt to mkvmerge, set the default track flag and save to the external HDD then you only have one file and can forget about copying the avi and a bunch of srt files....
high_definitely 04-22-09, 05:27 PM Hi all,
I have a problem with a mkv file containf a vc-1 stream. After a few seconds playing it just stops with a black screen.
any thoughts?
Known issue, VC-1 streams in a .mkv container, a feature added in the 1.02.xx firmware, ist still buggy. Even if the file can be played back, it's jerky, stuttering all the time.
Try muxing the file to .m2ts, using TsMuxer. Should play smoothly then.
high_definitely 04-22-09, 05:34 PM First thoughts about the new firmware:
- Hard drive spins down when the WD TV-HD is turned off, and spins up again when turned on, exactly like it should be! Finally, this rather annoying limitation has been fixed. Great!
- Good to have more options like auto subs on / off, subtitle outline thick / thin etc. Nice to see that features requested by the community have been implemented.
- Unfortunately, the 23.976Hz mode still doesn't work (resolution switched to 480i, WD TV-HD says "auto"). And 23.976fps files played back at 1080p/24 still stutter every 40 seconds.
- VC-1 encoded .mkvs still play jerky and stutter continously. If this is not going to be fixed, and it doesn't look like it will, I'll have to mux the remaining files to .m2ts for good.

Surely you wouldn't expect me to do that to around 1900 avis, do you? ;)
Most, by the way, already on external HDD. (Others still on data dvds and cds, i'm not rich!)
wicker_man 04-22-09, 05:43 PM For the curious, ogg inside mkv is still unsupported.
raiden-snake 04-22-09, 05:48 PM I have WD drive my book essential edition 500 GB, and the Hard drive dont spins down when the WD TV-HD is turned off :(

Yes, but the drive itself stopped spinning, didn't it?
Yes, but the drive itself stopped spinning, didn't it?
I think so. I don't hear my disk and the led is always ON (not blinking).
When I turn off my player it suppose to be OFF, but when I touch it 3 hours later the player is still warm. I think that the power is not cut off completly. Its a little bit annoying.
genesis113 04-22-09, 06:14 PM wow, subtitle almost perfect now.:) Last thing to add is more font size selection >40.
Please add in DVD-menu and external DVD-ROM drive (officially) support.
Then WDTV will be perfect for me and I'll confirm buy one more set. :D
BadByte 04-22-09, 06:36 PM Edit: D'oh!
WD Passport Essential 320GB / WDME3200TE. Spins down and back up. If only the drive's LED light could give a better status feedback.
Thanks WDTV crew =)
For me only one functionality is remained.
DVD Menu support for VIDEO_TS folder and iso files.
thanks scottwd and guywd !!!
You guys are listening to users !!!
Other companies should take lesson from you guys.
Thanks!
+1 DVD menu support is only thing that has been needed since first firmware, I never had any other problems with WD TV.
powerleakin 04-22-09, 07:05 PM WD, so far,so good! Thanks!
Please add "Recently Added" feature.
Then it'll be perfect!
bigjsouth 04-22-09, 07:10 PM I feel left out in the cold guys!
What about the few of us who have EVO. Files???????
I want to be able to watch my Evo files play back on the WD-TV but every concern raised to the WD-TV team (great job on the pre-releases guys!) ignores the lack of native hd-dvd playback... you know the lack of evo file playback is never even brought up!
So heres my sad face icon :(
mytbyte 04-22-09, 07:32 PM I feel left out in the cold guys!
What about the few of us who have EVO. Files???????
The needs of many supersede the needs of the few :D one could google for any odd format someone came up with and moan about why it's not supported...HD-DVD is DEAD...
fred_be9300 04-22-09, 07:35 PM GuyWD,
Suppose I want to both disconnect my hard disc & turn off the WDTV (standby mode).
I'm now wondering whether both of these are equally correct (with 1.02.07):
1) "eject" hdd, disconnect hdd, turn off WDTV
2) turn off WDTV, wait for hdd to spin down, disconnect hdd.
are both procedures "safe". Is one preferred over the other?
TIA!
Dion250 04-22-09, 08:26 PM Both my drives spin down at shut off.. and spin up at start up.
I have 2 Western Digital My Book Essential Drives 750g and 1tb.

Peanuts Lives 04-22-09, 08:31 PM I have a feature request: choose subtitles color - in fact white or yellow only - to produce the most comfortable and readable text.
lmaolmao 04-22-09, 08:58 PM First thoughts about the new firmware:

those are my main gripes too. other than that, "supoirb"
gummitu 04-22-09, 10:16 PM There's no need to eject your drives prior to powering down the WDTV. Both 2.5" and 3.5" drives should spin down.
I have a WD750GB My Book Home Edition and when I turned the power off on the WDTV the drive did not stop spinning. However, when I ejected it, it did stop spinning.
I did not stop the movie that was playing when I turned off the power, does that need to be done before turning the power off to stop the spin?
ooberman 04-22-09, 10:19 PM ...and that may be nice and dandy for subs placed inside mkv, but please remember that most of us have, errr, made copies of our legally owned movies for several years now, and most of them are, therefore, avi, not mkv.
The option to choose auto on / auto off + always honour flag seems to me to be the most inclusive and correct.
i would almost agree with you wicker_man
it seems alot of you have never used mkvmerge gui or have acutally checked what the flags are set to after muxing.
this is directly from the help file
Make default track: Matroska knows a flag which tells the player that a specific track should be preferred upon playback if the user does not chose another one. Of course each track type has its own default track - e.g. the default audio track is the English one, and the default subtitle track is the French one. If no track is set to be the default track then mkvmerge will promote the first track of each type that it finds to be the default track. This is consistent with the behavior of various media players.
ok now so if i have any subtitle tracks in a mkv the first track will default to the "default" setting in mkvmerge, and that is actually the "yes" selection
not a very clear setting
now most people would not change that setting and also would not assume that this means "yes" , if you don't select yes then why would i want it on by default?
i do understand alot of the whine about subs on or off but either way most players let me choose a global setting of on or off not just a per file setting, but it seems to me that most of the people that use subs would want them on at all times if they are there (in the mkv or a seperate file) and those of us that do not use them would just like them off.
if the wdtv respected these flags in mkv's every rip that i have and did not select yes or no would have them on default!
please no i like wicker_man would not like to remux everyone of the rips that i have.
i do understand that i could just not use subtitles in my rips but as i have a deaf brother who likes them that is just not a good option for me.
please just let us choose a global default of on or off, and please skip the mkv flag settings.
also for those who think using the flags is a good idea please use mkvmerge and make something with several audio and subtitle tracks in your mkv without changing the setting from default on any track.
now start a new job in mkvmerge, load up that file you just made and check out your default track flags and see what they are...
i just did a few to verify this, and one with a aac stereo track as the first track audio and a dts track for the second audio, muxed it, and it set my dts track as default "yes", and according to the directions it should set the aac track as default "yes".
and it did set my single subtitle track to "yes" and i didn't select that. (just fyi if only one track of each vid, audio, and subs, it sets all to "yes")
i don't have any mkv's with more the one subtitle track to see what it would it would do with those. i would assume the same crazy stuff it does with audio tracks.
either way the flags are wierd and hopefully will never be used with the wdtv
and lol if you made it this far thanks for reading!
Scott, Guy and everyone at WD thanks a tonne for the awesome support in pumping out those fw updates. Great to see and its this top notch support (not being forgotten about) that makes me want to buy Western Digital again in the future. WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+1
thanks
Is there any menus that can 'FIND DEVICES'?
the EJECT button can eject the USB devices. after ejecting, unless I unplug and plug again, I can't make WD TV recognize the devices.
quetion.
1. does the ONLY way to recognize is 'PLUG USG DEVICES'?,
even if it is ejected by software(eject button).
techflaws 04-23-09, 01:33 AM Sorry but my Lacie Neil Poulton 3.5 750Gb does not spin down after i turn off the WD TV. :(
Might be the controller of your drive. My external drives with EIDE disks do not spin down, those with SATA do.

Right. Except that I now have to keep two versions of the same movie since my girlfriend's standalone (as well as those of my friends) do not support mkv but avi/srt. My idea in getting the WD was to have one device that playes em all without any remuxing. I guess, I was wrong.

wicker_man 04-23-09, 02:44 AM Did they made the subs bigger?
no.
Awesome job on the firmware! I have not experienced any issues.Plays all formats fine with no sync issues even MKV.
I'm sure a lot of the sync issues people are experiencing can be accredited to poor/older HDMI processing on their TV/Home theater system
I only have a couple requests for future releases:
1) Completely power down HD when WDTV is turned off, considering the HD has the ability ie: 2.5" drives, WD Mybook essentials with "smart power"
2) Ability to read database files created by software like "Movie Collector" in order to display extended movie info ie: plot, actors, release date etc....
I've only had my wdtv for 1 month and already it has exiled my iogear mp to the closet of misfit gadgets.
polakis 04-23-09, 03:04 AM Scott and GuyWD thanks for your updates. The latest firmware is very very good!

For now, convert srt to idx/sub. I use AVIAddXSubs. You have to choose specific colors but you get a very satisfying result:
Text: YCrCb(235,128,128)
Outline: YCrCb(16,128,128)

degiovab 04-23-09, 03:58 AM I would like to congratulate with the excellent work of the WD team. You are displaying superb customer care and honest desire to improve the product, which are two fundamental ingredients to success.
I would like also to support those who mentioned "handling DVD menus" as an important new feature to add.
Perhaps, an intermediate and easier to implement step could be the support of a "Goto Next Chapter" and "Goto Previous Chapter" function which could be linked to the navigation keys (which are currently unused during playback).
Such commands could apply to VOBs and to MKVs (the latter already support chapters, but only opening the extra functions menu).
I know... requests will never end... but in the meantime thanks again!
joshjoshlol 04-23-09, 04:05 AM am thankful to report that my Seagate Freeagent 500gb external HDD (Mac HFS non journaled) spun down correctly on power down of the WDTV, and there appear to be no issues.
confirmed that the 40 second stutter issue is still alive and well. my display is a 52" Sony Bravia, WDTV connected through HDMI.
would also like to reiterate the desire to see vorbis support within the matroska container, and chime in with my usual request to see the code tags within .ass subtitles taken care of. hopefully with the subtitle default issue taken care of and that onslaught of complaints dealt with, GuyWD and crew can focus on the real perks of owning the WDTV
swashbuckle 04-23-09, 04:13 AM yes, please have vorbis support in .MKV

1% for Black levels WorK!
Hi. I very much appreciate the outcome of the WD team with this new update. Still I think the firmware is far from perfect, because a whole world of subtitle support is totally missing. I refer to the fact that so far the firmware does not recognize subtitle streams in DVB-T and DVB-S transport streams at all (.ts recordings). This support is not a problem with for instance VLC and the latest DivX player. Mark51
tatayet 04-23-09, 04:33 AM Hi all, and thank you for these better and better updates.
For your information, my drive does not spin down at shut off.
It's an old 2.5" Western Digital (WD800 Scorpio) 80 Gb I put in a cheap mobile external box called 'Truewin model HD-D3-U2'.
Hope this information can help.
Sorry for my pretty bad english of french guy.
:)

Fuelbomb 04-23-09, 04:40 AM I'm not sure if subtitles are SO important... I always switch them off unless it's a movies that's not in english, german, french.
The best thing is: switching off HDDs! Awesome work! I hope you continue your excellent work, the community will thank you!
Nice to have:
TXT-Support would be great! Like xdurus said ("in order to display extended movie info ie: plot, actors, release date").
Like:
movie.mkv
movie.jpg (cover)
movie.txt
Text will be displayed in a little field or pop-up to show external informations.
That would be a sweet "nice to have" feature!
mytbyte 04-23-09, 04:49 AM @Ukkram: you are right...one could say that no device can keep up with ever emerging and changing open formats of subtitles but DVB subtitles are officially standardized subtitles (like DVD subtitles) and should be supported since there is no excuse to omit them - they are officially supported and documented...
Sadly, h.264 HD .TS still won't play in 1.02.07
Just a reminder: there is now an option to choose if subtitles should come on or not when a file is played back...
Nice work, WD Guys! I have a huch that 1.03.00 will be the official release and we are running out of numbers! :D 3 more pre-releases to go to fix the most pressing issues!
2004RuN 04-23-09, 04:54 AM My Seagate (500 and 650GB) are both spining down and spining up perfectly.

I would love this, but probably csv, xml or html would be better (as in more universal) extensions to be dealt with, bearing in mind the number of film collection software available out there. Personally, i use Ant Movie Catalog, which rocks, imho.
is it still does not support arabic subtitle

Tranqui, Miguel.
The ability to see our own problems is mark of the wise. Portugal has a lot of backwards hicks as well - the only difference is that they see films in its original version.

I am sorry if I misused the word "paleto". I was NOT referring to those who did not had the opportunity to study or to learn how to read. Besides, i have the utmost respect for country folk, they are usually very nice people.
I was referring to educated people that *can* read subtitles and enjoy the work of actors with their own voices (and all the blood, sweat and tears that work made them spill), but prefer to see some bastardized version, spoken over by someone other than the actor.
You are right i should have not been disrespectful, and for that as well i apologise. :(
I just get carried way when people defend such a "crime", that is, the mutilation of a film and the actors' work.
Would you like to see an Almodovar or Amenabar film dubbed in English? I guess not ;)
mister_dude 04-23-09, 05:38 AM Thanks for the frequent updates WD!
I have one issue though:
When FF or skipping 10 minutes in .mkv files and hitting play, the movie hangs and won't play anymore. It is only a static image showing. If I try playing other files it jumps to this movies static image too. Eventually the box hangs and only a powercycle is the solution. Then the problem occurs again. I didn't have this issue in 1.02.00. (I don't know if the firmwares between 1.02.0x - 1.02.07 had this issue).

I didn't have this issue in 1.02.00. (I don't know if the firmwares between 1.02.0x - 1.02.07 had this issue).
This behaviour does not occur on my machine. Could you be so kind and post the info of one of those files? Please use a program called mediainfo. TIA.

I can see the reframes is a bit high, but there is no problem if I only play the movie in its whole.
Here is the mediainfo.

I guess it must be due to that - we're talking 8 frames, not 5.
Format settings, ReFrames : 8 frames
Muxing mode : Container profile=Unknown@5.1
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 800 pixels
The fact that the WDTV shows it at all is already quite remarkable (and maybe a proof they are upping the number of reframes supported?) but when you FF or RW you're asking much more processor/memory power, i reckon.
Try to do it with a 5 reframes mkv, if you can.
I can't seem to get my box to wake up from it's screensaver without unplugging the device, any one else?

strange... how long was that screensaver on? Couple of days? ;)
migueldd 04-23-09, 06:10 AM Thanks WD for the coninuos update. Would be possible to make the size of the thumbs a bit bigger?. I think that are little for showing them on <32" TVs and there´s a lot of space unused around in the page.
Greetings again.

+1, I fully agree!

The screensaver was on for about 5 hours, I have since tried again (leaving screensaver on for about 30 mins) with same result. Strange eh?

indeed... will try later today.
Thanks to the WD team for thier great work.
1. It appears that on my 1TB WD Elements is spinning down, but it still see power with either power off or Eject. The drive is no longer spinning from what I can tell(Cant be 100% sure though), but the light on the back is still on. I think it has to do with the drive, but I cant be 100% positive.
2. I saw reported earlier that subs sometimes come up too fast, I had this happen with an MKV file recently and it was not corrected with this firmware. This subtitle was for non-english parts in an english language movie and the subs were embedded. Since this doesnt happen on many movies I own, hopefully it will be fixed before the final comes out :).
Besides that I havent really had any issues before or after the firmware as of yet. Keep up the great work and thanks again.

I had the same issue with all .mkv files (even 720p, and <5reframes) with this firmware.
BUT... now when I try to replicate the issue, (after taking the HDD to my computer and back, and did a new unplugging of the box powersupply), there is no problem, no hangs, no freezing, nice FF, nice 10min skipping, resuming movies etc. I don't know what I did to solve it, maybe disconnecting EVERYTHING have done some magic.
Another thing: I had to rename some jpg to folder.jpg to show up as covers for the folders. I had them named the same as the folder before.

great job with this realease ... but .. next in to-do list :
DVD menu suport (ISO and TS_folder) and with chapter suport FF/FW
subtitle:
- font size bigger than 40 .... max 50
- font bold option
- font outline size option (1, 2, 3)
- subtitle vertical poziton up/down
photos: time transition (1, 2 seconds)
volume sound: sound is to small on wdtv ... TV broadcast transmision is bigger ... maybe you can add volume +- on remote
External usb DVD-rom suport official ...
dchavez 04-23-09, 07:20 AM This has probably already been requested, but I was thinking it would be cool if you could hit the <option> key on the remote with a file/thumbnail selected and the WDTV could navigate to a new screen with more info about that file (movie info etc from some metadata file)? From that screen you could press <Play> or <Back>. Hitting <Play> with a thumbnail selected could continue to work as it currently does.
Otherwise the only other things left on my wishlist are:
-Dvd Menu support
-30 sec skip
-Highlighting the most recently played video(s) in a folder if any via some thumbnail markup
-List view option for specific folders (ie. folder with thumb for the TV series, and list for each episode), perhaps indicated via a <FolderName>.list file present alongside the thumbnail jpg?
Thanks for the ongoing support WD!!
Fuelbomb 04-23-09, 07:36 AM I don't think that DVD-menu support will be possible due to legal/license restrictions... Same with external DVD-ROM-Support.
But additional informations (TXT, CSV, XML,...) for files would be really great. :-)
thund3rcat 04-23-09, 07:44 AM Thanks for the frequent updates WD!

Same thing happened to me tonight with a 720p file, had to downgrade to 1.02.06 to make it go away.
Hope the next release fixes this.
I'm having trouble with a couple of 720p .MKVs (video goes choppy and looses audio sync)
Does anyone know how many ref frames are allowed in 720p to play smoothly in the wdtv?
I know the limit for 1080p is 5 but no one mention what happen with lower resolutions. (wiki isn't very clear...)
Thx

First, thanks to WD developers for providing us those pre-releases.
One question though: in 1.02.07, is the clipping audio issue solved? This problem is mentionned several times in this forum and it looks more important to me than the subtitles font outline ;)
hidalgo76 04-23-09, 08:20 AM For me only one functionality is remained.
DVD Menu support for VIDEO_TS folder and iso files.
thanks scottwd and guywd !!!
You guys are listening to users !!!
Other companies should take lesson from you guys.
Thanks!

Thanks for your hard work and for listening to your customers.
But this DVD menu support for VIDEO_TS and ISO files should be added to have a full multimedia device.
Or at least confirm us if this is possible to add this feature or for licensing issues you cannot implement it to the WD TV.

Pray tell, what language are those parts in (i couldn't understand)? and what additional encoding support have you selected?
The language I beleive is Chinese, but I am not certain. It is only for about 2 min of the entire film, but I was able to catch them for the most part by pausing right before the subs came up.
I have seen other movies with Subs that came up normally and didnt "appear then dissapear" very quickly. So this wasnt something that I caught earlier, and this wasnt a movie I was able to test with earlier versions of the firmware.
Since this was the first time it happened, I wasnt really concerned about it, I only remember seeing it mentioned before and when it happened to me it "rang a bell".
Not sure what you mean by additional encoding support, as I am new to the whole ripping\encoding thing.
kciaccio 04-23-09, 08:59 AM The needs of many supersede the needs of the few :D one could google for any odd format someone came up with and moan about why it's not supported...HD-DVD is DEAD...

I guess I mis understoof you, the movie is in English, there is a small part where they speak a foreign language. This Language is translated into English via embedded subs. Before with movies I have always left it to the default (Western Europe) for addtional endcoding support. This was the first movie, where the subs came up and went away too quickly (displayed for 1 second or so).

There is no reference frame limitation when it comes to 720p files. So your playback problems have a different cause. Post the MediaInfo details.

Ok
The problem is low framerate (harder in the first one) and audio out of sync. I've tryied them with the official release as well and the choppy video is still there although audio seems to be in right place. Btw subtitles and audio are sync in both cases.
Any clue?

At first glance, there is nothing wrong with the files, although it's unusual to see a 4.1 profile video with 11 rf (1st example). Do they play without a hitch on the PC? VLC is a good choice for spotting glitches / problematic files.
You could try to remux those files again, e.g. remove the subtitle track from the first file (just an idea), or use tsmuxer to mux them to .m2ts. Could be worth a try.
Sorry that I can't be more of a help, but just going by the Mediainfo details, your WD TV-HD should be able to play back those files properly.

Dear ScottWD and GuyWD for the excellent work !
still - there is no support for HEBREW subtitles (.SRT)
when is it planned?
another question to the Forum - is there a support for card reader through USB ? i tried to use a SD card with a card reader and it was not identified.
thx in advance

I'm no expert at this, but wouldn't it be possible to create a workaround for DVD menus ? WD would document a file format (TXT or XML) from which WDTV would read menu information for a DVD folder and display it. Something like:
<menu dvdtitle="My DVD">
<menuitem caption="Title 1" file="VTS_01_0.VOB" time="01:02:03" />
<menuitem caption="Title 2" file="VTS_01_0.VOB" time="10:11:12" />
...
</menu>
Then we can create a program for reading original DVD menu information and generating menu information file from it.
I repeat: I'm no expert and I don't know if this is doable or it's just a stupid idea.
nivazno.
arisarts 04-23-09, 10:42 AM Scott and GuyWD thanks for your updates. The latest firmware is very very good!
Only one problem remains. I am Greek, and the greek subs problem isnt fixed yet!
We still have out of sync greek subs and flashing greek subs! Please do something! And i havent checked about greek letters È and ¢ problems.
Please fix them and everything will be perfect after that...

We cannot check the new features without greek subtitles (we are just installing the new firmware’s to see what is fixed and then returning to the latest final so our wife’s can see a movie :( )
Thanks! and keep it up :)

Arabic are Right to Left (same for Hebrew), so they need additional coding not needed for other languages. You have to wait until put this in their plan. But you can use idx/sub, I suppose.
Yes I know, but should be better in the arrow keys, in order to avoid move the fingers to find the right button.

I agree and made the same suggestion on the 1.02.06 board. also got a few PM's there from people who didn't know there was a page up/down function.
I've also been hinting at the volume output control since december.
Maybe one of these days...

I agree with the suggestion.
The current 10min skip is definitely too long.
I would prefer a 5min skip (and then pressing twice the button) rather than having a long skip and no other option.
Actually, it would not be bad to have the skip duration selectable (between 1min and 20min) in the settings section.

Why do you keep the commercials? Edit them out if you are going to keep the TV shows long term on the WD TV.

Hi!
Maybe the file is asynch because of the different Frame rates, one's 24 fps, the other 23.976 fps.
You could try mkvtoolnix 2.7.0 and change the Frame rate to the one of the working synch file...
Greets!

yvzrgntv 04-23-09, 11:41 AM well with the last prerelease firmware I should note that MyBook Essential (1TB) does not spin down...
Maybe in the coming updates...
Thanks for the work.
a big jerk 04-23-09, 11:56 AM 7 second rewind would be nice... there are something that make me want to re-watch a part, like if I accidently missed some dialog when someone walked into the room.
misc123 04-23-09, 12:08 PM List View still showing 5 lines of the same file in the folder. If you have 100 files in the folder, List View will show 500 files in total. Not a big deal, but annoying when you have files saved both in the root and folders.
frankyH 04-23-09, 12:11 PM My 2.5 inch bus powered satadrive (FUJITSU MHY2250BH 250 GB) doesn't spin down. it's build in in an enclosure from MSI STARBOX.
Also another issue, when i've ejected my drive and turn my WD off and on again with the drive connected, the WD doesn't recognize my drive (No storage present). The only way I can get it running again is by removing the usb cable from the drive and plug it back in again.
Keep up the good work guys at WD !!!

I'm not sure if this is a known issue, but subtitles in idx/sub format don't seem to get the thick borders when selected.
The below example is from the animated film 'Persepolis'. In this screenshot it's clear why either a)borders or b)different colors are needed for subs.
This image has font=40 and border=thick in the settings. subs are in idx/sub. Firmware is latest 1.02.07 (sorry for the glare on the tv, i don't usually watch in the daytime)

cutthatcity 04-23-09, 12:52 PM Awesome job on the firmware!
Nah i;ve been having awful sync issues with the past two releases on certain MKV files. it seems to be random.. certain files from the same tv show rips play and some dont play right. the sound starts about a second after the video and stays out of sync. my tv and hdmi cable are both less than a month old. and its a toshiba tv its not a piece of junk.. so i dont think its that.
overdrivesdl 04-23-09, 12:53 PM Just wanted to say my thanks to everyone in WD working hard on keeping this media player the best at its value and listening to the community feedbacks through each update.
Thanks again for all the great work!
Could not agree more. What about a petition recommending ScottWD and GuyWD receive an excellence award and a very welcome bonus for incredible customer relations ! Are you listening CEO of Western Digital ? GIVE THESE GUYS A PAY RISE IMMEDIATELTY !!!!. After all, we are in the middle of a global financial mess at the moment and I am sure they would appreciate it :D:D:D
On 1.02.07
A. Like the spin down of Hd on power off. Good feature
B. Like the selection of subs on/off. Common sense has prevailed at last !
Will keep testing an inform of any abnormalities.
Thanks guys :)
cutthatcity 04-23-09, 12:53 PM oh and i downgraded back to 1.01.02 and the files play perfect now. so im not sure what the deal is. also i have a few .avi files that have never played correctly and i have no idea why. the audio plays but the video plays at about 1 frame per 5 seconds.
I'm not sure if this is a known issue, but subtitles in idx/sub format don't seem to get the thick borders when selected.
This image has font=40 and border=thick in the settings. subs are in idx/sub. Firmware is latest 1.02.07 (sorry for the glare on the tv, i don't usually watch in the daytime)
IDX/SUB subtitles are overlaid bitmap images so the font=40 and border=thick have no meaning. I suspect your IDX file's palette is in RGB instead of YUV. That's why it's so hard to see. Convert the 16 palette entries to YUV and it should be much easier to read. You can use this (http://www.dvd-replica.com/DVD/coloryuv2.php) to convert from RGB to YUV (you will have to convert from hex to decimal, put the decimal values in the online tool, get the YUV decimal values, then convert from decimal to hex, and replace the values in the IDX)

ahhhh...thanks for the help with this. So much to learn about with this digital video stuff.
cerulean 04-23-09, 01:10 PM Why do you keep the commercials? Edit them out if you are going to keep the TV shows long term on the WD TV.
-Mod
I don't keep shows long term... But I can't use the WDTV to watch shows without a reasonable skip/rewind for TV recordings. I find that the 30/7 increments work well for me. Two to 6 clicks forward and one back allows me to skip most commercial breaks with a minimum of delay.

I'm now quite happy with the video capabilities! I however have some small issues when it comes to photo viewing. I have a library on my (WD Passport Essential) HD with apx 500 JPG-pictures (each sized 2-5 MB). Updating the thumbnails will take very long time. It refuses to update all thumbnails when I enter that specific library. I have to scroll down to next thumbnail page (next 10 pics) in order for it to update those etc. Having 500 pics, I have to scroll down 50 pages, waiting between 30 seconds and 2 minutes for the ten visible TN:s to be updated.
When I have done this, it occasionaly seems to forget the TN:s, so I have to go trough the process again.
Keep up the good work with the improving firmware updates! :)
Scott and GuyWD thanks for your updates. The latest firmware is very very good!
Only one problem remains. I am Greek, and the greek subs problem isnt fixed yet!
We still have out of sync greek subs and flashing greek subs! Please do something! And i havent checked about greek letters Θ and Ά problems.
Please fix them and everything will be perfect after that...
i wish and hope for this ! ;)
Thanks high_definitely,
Both VLC and mplayer (I am a mac user) are able to play them without any problem.
I'll try your suggestion as soon as I get home.

1. It appears that on my 1TB WD Elements is spinning down, but it still see power with either power off or Eject. The drive is no longer spinning from what I can tell(Cant be 100% sure though), but the light on the back is still on. I think it has to do with the drive, but I cant be 100% positive.
This is normal. We're not turning off the USB bus power. Instead, we're just telling the drives to spin down. This is why some models of external drive don't spin down - they might not support the spindown command.
One question though: in 1.02.07, is the clipping audio issue solved? This problem is mentionned several times in this forum and it looks more important to me than the subtitles font outline ;)
No, this is still an issue.
Also another issue, when i've ejected my drive and turn my WD off and on again with the drive connected, the WD doesn't recognize my drive (No storage present). The only way I can get it running again is by removing the usb cable from the drive and plug it back in again.
This is also normal. For now, if you've ejected a drive, the only way to get the WDTV to re-recognize it is to disconnect and reconnect the drive.
razuraw 04-23-09, 01:48 PM thanks for update wd and the great support:D subs are nearly perfect, the thick outline is ok but the white font is too less where in the dark scenes it strains your eyes trying to read them:(. can please add more white on the font and less outline(bit more then the thin outline please).
p.s please fix the problem with multiple lines of subtitles on screen at the same time issue, if u cant have them both onscreen at the same time then please have it ignore the text on top of the screen and just have the bottom ones showing thanks.
fred_be9300 04-23-09, 01:49 PM GuyWD,
Suppose I want to both disconnect my hard disc & turn off the WDTV (standby mode).
TIA!

Can you please clarify?
Does the spinning down also unmount the drives,
i.e. is it safe to power them off without compromising the data on them?
Thanks in advance
for the fantastic support and development of the WDTV.
joshjoshlol 04-23-09, 02:35 PM this has been a long standing issue with a sub/idx file that i have. hoping GuyWD can take a look and see if there's a fix. the main issue is that subs will not display on screen when 2 overlapping lines display, rather than the text subtitle bug where only 1 line will display under similar circumstances.
attached is the file in question. can provide more if necessary.
Tut_Ank 04-23-09, 02:41 PM i would almost agree with you wicker_man
it seems alot of you have never used mkvmerge gui or have acutally checked what the flags are set to after muxing.
this is directly from the help file
ok now so if i have any subtitle tracks in a mkv the first track will default to the "default" setting in mkvmerge, and that is actually the "yes" selection
not a very clear setting
now most people would not change that setting and also would not assume that this means "yes" , if you don't select yes then why would i want it on by default?
i do understand alot of the whine about subs on or off but either way most players let me choose a global setting of on or off not just a per file setting, but it seems to me that most of the people that use subs would want them on at all times if they are there (in the mkv or a seperate file) and those of us that do not use them would just like them off.
if the wdtv respected these flags in mkv's every rip that i have and did not select yes or no would have them on default!
please no i like wicker_man would not like to remux everyone of the rips that i have.
i do understand that i could just not use subtitles in my rips but as i have a deaf brother who likes them that is just not a good option for me.
please just let us choose a global default of on or off, and please skip the mkv flag settings.
also for those who think using the flags is a good idea please use mkvmerge and make something with several audio and subtitle tracks in your mkv without changing the setting from default on any track.
now start a new job in mkvmerge, load up that file you just made and check out your default track flags and see what they are...
i just did a few to verify this, and one with a aac stereo track as the first track audio and a dts track for the second audio, muxed it, and it set my dts track as default "yes", and according to the directions it should set the aac track as default "yes".
and it did set my single subtitle track to "yes" and i didn't select that.
Mines create correctly, I nave to select NO for the tracks that I don't want fo be on and thats all, if you open the mkv again they show as default, but they are oke, if you play the file (NOT on the WD) it will not play any subtitles if you set them to NO, but if you open it with mkvmerge will not show the values that are selected, it takes seconds to change them, althoug the WDTV doenot honour the flag all my mkv have the flags the way I want them to play, and they work correctly on the PC, I just hope that some day they will also on the WD.
hiendas 04-23-09, 02:42 PM First, thanks to WD developers for providing us those pre-releases.
One question though: in 1.02.07, is the clipping audio issue solved? This problem is mentionned several times in this forum and it looks more important to me than the subtitles font outline ;)
I can confirm that the audio related clipping problem hasn't been fixed.
Distortion poduced due to signal clipping is very annoying indeed and clearly audiible on good audio systems.
I first reported this issue 3 months ago. I have also uploaded images with oscilloscope traces highlighting the problem.
What else can I do ?

Sorry for poor English
high_definitely 04-23-09, 04:04 PM I have not noticed any change in DivX / XviD picture quality.
Thanks for the frequent updates WD!
This happened to me as well.
Is there any possibility add other language translation for the menus ? If there is any file for translation I am able translate this file to my language ( czech ).

fred_be9300 04-23-09, 04:34 PM Can you guys confirm that your drives spin down when your WDTV is powered off, and that they spin back up when it's powered on? If you can note what kind of drive you're using (brand and model), that would also be very helpful.
I have a Lacie 1TB "Neil Poulton" (3.5", Seagate disk inside)
I'm strongly under the impression that it does not spin down (both on power off & eject). I don't care that much, because it has its own power button on the side, and I turn it off when not in use.
Another Lacie, 500 GB Little Disk "Sam Hecht" (2.5", Samsung inside) does spin down power off & eject; & spin up on power on.
Can you guys confirm that your drives spin down when your WDTV is powered off, and that they spin back up when it's powered on? If you can note what kind of drive you're using (brand and model), that would also be very helpful.
Thanks again. Your feedback is invaluable.
I have a USB Hub attached with 3 Verbatim 1TB HDDs. They all spun down and back up again. Great job. P.S. I promose to start purchasing WD HDDs if you build in "USB Hub Support" :)
- Unfortunately, the 23.976Hz mode still doesn't work (resolution switched to 480i, WD TV-HD says "auto"). And 23.976fps files played back at 1080p/24 still stutter every 40 seconds.
I could have sworn lots of users on the thread for the previous version (1.02.04 I think) mentioned the 1080p24 option was working perfectly now. Now judder whatsoever.
high_definitely 04-23-09, 05:06 PM 1080p/24Hz playback improved dramatically with 1.02.04, but it still is not perfect unfortunately, unless the file plays back at 24fps exactly. 23.976Hz files, the vast majority of progressive mvovies (e.g. Blu-rays), still stutter shortly every 40 seconds. It is bearable, but noticable during slow pans.
+1, for me .iso backups are quickest to create with no loss of quality .. and having the menu's and chapters working would be great.
+1 the same thing here

Torbenstein 04-23-09, 06:04 PM Hello,
i have the firmware 1.02.06 installed and the improvements in that version were great! I will test the new beta 1.02.07 later on..... but from the description of this new release and from what i read here on this forum there is still no way to display the subs in a correct position on the TV screen for me.
When i watch my movies the subs are always on the bottom of the screen and because of this i have always to look to the bottom therefore i lose some of the action in the movie. It would be great if there was a way to display the subs in the middle of the screen like in the VLC Player, like an option where you can choose the position of the subs.
Other then that im very satisfied with this great product and the support of WD.
I hope this little issue could be fixed in an future release ;) Or if someone knows a workaround for this you are welcome to explain it to me.
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 06:16 PM I just request more zoom out options for the crt owners like me who suffer from overscanning.
Heh. Some of us also request more zoom in options. The 2x zoom is overkill on the first press. Some of us would like a zoom which stretches or zooms the picture to lessen the black bars on the sides when viewing 4:3 material. Since I have a Plasma it is sometimes useful to get rid of the black bars to ward off image retention, and also some programs will look better stretched a bit, and filling the screen. I don't even mind if to lessen the black bars the top and bottom of the video is cropped just a bit. Right now to get rid of the black bars on the sides half the top and bottom of the video disappears. It's overkill.
Or WD could simply change the output on the fly for each file and then my Samsung can do the zooming. My Samsung won't zoom unless it detects a 480 signal, and to have to manually go into settings everytime I want to zoom something with 4:3 content and black bars on the sides is a bit of a hassle.
subuteo 04-23-09, 06:34 PM Greetings to the community!
Im having a problem since I upgraded from 1.01 to 1.02.06 and I wonder if anyone else is affected!
I use srt subtitles most of the time and with 1.02.06 it seems that the subs now stay on-screen for a fraction of time the supposed to!
Some subtitles stay on-screen less that half a second!
The strange thing is that exactly the same srt behaves normaly on a computer avi player with an vobsub plugin or even in a WDTV loaded with the 1.01 firmware - so it is not a problem with the structure or the timings of the srt file!
Thanx in advance for your time and efforts answering to me...
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 06:40 PM I feel left out in the cold guys!
So heres my sad face icon :(
I have brought this up on multiple occasions in the last few months. I just don't want to nag WD to death about it. Native support of .EVO files would be a very welcome feature. As I have said in the past, when you rip an HD-DVD to your HDD, the main movie is contained in an .EVO file.
For instance, many of the files on the episodes of Planet Earth HD-DVD are about 7.40 GB per episode give or take. The inconvenience is this. After you rip the disc to your HDD and have a 7.4 GB .EVO file, to make it play on the WD you must first:
1) demux the A/V streams with a program like EVOdemux. This ties up another 7.4 GB of space on your HDD for the separate audio/video stream files.
2) Use a program like TS Muxer or MKVmerge or something to remux the A/V streams into a container like .TS or .M2TS or .MKV that the WD can handle. Of course the resulting .TS/.M2TS/.MKV file will take up yet another 7.4 GB
Of course, after you have remuxed into the container of your choice, then you can simply delete the raw A/V streams, and if you want the original .EVO ripped file. But this means for each episode of Planet Earth that I have on HD-DVD and want to watch with full quality on my WD, I have to reserve 22+ GB at least temporarily for ripping, demuxing, and remuxing. All this ripping, demuxing and remuxing requires a lot of free HDD space and it tends to fragment your HDD rather quickly, especially if it is low on space to begin with. It would be nice if you could just rip once to HDD as a 7.4 GB .EVO file and then play it natively.
Saves time, saves HDD space, and saves fragmenting your HDD so quickly. That is the only reason we request native HD-DVD support of .EVO files. It wouldn't be that hard for WD to implement if it was a high enough priority for them. Free Zoom player on my PC plays .EVO files natively without any problem.

Just read 1-2 pages before from some fellow , that maybe this only affects Greek subs!
I confirm that my problem is indeed with Greek subtitles!!!
If the WDTV finds time to take care of this , please fix the capital Theta letter (it is as ugly as a monkeys arse) and the accented capital A.
Thank you-thank you-thank you.

I just found out a trick that allow you to move video screen anywhere you want and the subtitle will work.
To do that -
1. Move the video anywhere you want
2. Turn on the subtitle
3. Click rewind 2x, allow the video to rewind for 20 second
4. Then click play
5. Now the subtitle should work with a widescreen video on the top or bottom.
Hope that will fix your problem. :)

DocuMaker 04-23-09, 06:48 PM The needs of many supersede the needs of the few :D one could google for any odd format someone came up with and moan about why it's not supported...HD-DVD is DEAD...
HD-DVD may be dead, but HD-DVD is also cheap. I picked up the Planet Earth series on HD-DVD for $15 on Craigslist. To get a copy on Blu Ray for my father for X-mas, who doesn't have the means to play HD-DVD, ran me $40 on Craigslist. The encode is the exact same quality on both formats.
subuteo 04-23-09, 07:02 PM Are you serious?
Yes Iam :)
To be honest , the WDTV Greek font is a very poorly designed font.
The capital Theta letter ( Θ ) on the WDTV looks like an O with a small H embeded , the capital accented A ( Ά ) looks like a plain accent with no A ( ' ) the small delta (δ) is well... misfigured and the ending s (ς) is , well...
There are tons of beautifull open-source greek fonts out there... I surely hope that someone on the WDTV can use one proper Greek font for the Greek WDTV community
Thank you.
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 07:33 PM Thanks WD for the coninuos update. Would be possible to make the size of the thumbs a bit bigger?. I think that are little for showing them on <32" TVs and there´s a lot of space unused around in the page.
Greetings again.
Yes, the option for bigger thumbnails would be nice. They don't even look all that large on my 50", so I can imagine on a 32" they are a bit small.
But we don't want WD to just make them bigger! No! no! no! As soon as they accede to your wishes and make them bigger, someone will complain that they are too big and they want them smaller! The best thing is to always tell WD that we want more choices. WD needs to understand that there should be an additional choice for larger thumbs if people want them. This will eliminate a lot of disputes between users. Do you notice how much happier everyone became when WD finally figured out that it was best to give the users a choice whether or not to have subtitles on by default? WD could have easily offered a choice on whether to default to videos/photos/music as well. As it turned out, they set it up to default to photos, and then due to input from users they took the time to switch it to video by default. How much nicer it would have been if they had simply just offered the users a choice in the matter from the get go? I prefer it defaulting to videos right now, but I can envision a scenario where I wanted it back to photos.
My family wanted to get one of those photo-frame things for my grandfather, who is 98 years old and losing his memory. They thought it would be nice to put a whole collection of family photos with names labeled on one of those photo-frames so my grandfather could recall who was who--you know to jog his memory. Most of those photo-frames are too small, and the ones that are larger are quite pricey. But they are very limited in functionality. So I told my sister that if she planned on spending $150 for a fancy photo-frame, it would be better to just pick up a $99 19 inch LCD monitor and a WDTV and plug in a flash drive with photos loaded up on it. One of the drawbacks with this idea is that it can't be too complicated for my uncle to fire up when he leaves in the morning, or for the nurse's aids who come to care for my grandfather. If I could choose to make it default to photos that would eliminate one step in making this work. I know, I know. I could always revert back to the original FW which defaults to photos for this specific case. But then I would be losing out on many other features that have been implemented in the later FW's.
The other nice feature that would seal it for me and I would definitely buy another unit, would be for WD to implement an auto-play feature. I don't care exactly how they do it--they could offer a choice in the settings where one of the two USB ports could be turned on to auto-play files, or perhaps even better, they could make it so if you wanted to auto-play something on a flash drive you could just put a small file of some sort on the drive, which the WD would recognize as soon as it scanned it, which would tell it to start auto-playing. Then the monitor would not even be need to be turned on. When the power to the WD was shut off the monitor would go into standby. When the power of the WD was turned on by the remote, it would automatically wake up the monitor and start auto-playing the photo slide-show.
One-click simplicity.
So stop with all this talk of "perfection" when it comes to this device. This device is far from perfect and never will be "perfect". One could implement hundreds of new features if they simply made the software for this device open source and allowed plug-ins. All WD has to do is enable auto-play upon insertion of a thumbdrive, and they would easily sell an additional unit to me. The only way this neat little box will ever be "perfect" is when they open it up to the community to program features that WD is unwilling to take the time or $$$ to implement themselves.
gummitu 04-23-09, 07:35 PM I'm still having problems with one MKV file. Does anyone have an idea of why? I notice it especially if I fast forward to the 4th minute or so, and then the audio is terribly out of sync. I even remuxed it and added AC3 audio, still a problem. Any ideas?

kciaccio 04-23-09, 07:42 PM Yes Iam :)
Thank you.
Hopefully they put this at the end of the list and fix more important issues.
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 07:50 PM +1
We cannot check the new features without greek subtitles (we are just installing the new firmware’s to see what is fixed and then returning to the latest final so our wife’s can see a movie :( )
Thanks! and keep it up :)
I'm not even Greek and I would like them to fix the Greek subtitles, simply because I am learning how to speak Greek, and a good way to learn Greek is to watch videos dubbed with Greek audio and English or Greek subtitles.
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 07:57 PM WD,
Feature request:
While file playing:
Right arrow: 30 second skip forward
Left arrow: 7 second skip back
These increments work well for skipping commercials in recorded TV shows.
Thanks,
Bob
Maybe it wouldn't be too hard for them to allow the user a choice in the matter. Perhaps in the settings the user could choose to program the button to skip ahead 30 secs, 60 secs, 90 secs or 120 secs. Commercials usually last more than 30 secs--sometimes even more than 2 minutes. That means I might have to push the skip button 4 or 5 times to get to the end of the commercials at 30 secs a pop.
I'm thinking 1 minute on the first press would be nice, and then 30 secs on each additional press.
Do I seem too demanding? Well, WD could always open up their device to the community and we could program all this ourselves, and leave them alone. ;)
lifterjack 04-23-09, 07:59 PM List View still showing 5 lines of the same file in the folder. If you have 100 files in the folder, List View will show 500 files in total. Not a big deal, but annoying when you have files saved both in the root and folders.
+1 but only a few files
DocuMaker 04-23-09, 08:03 PM Why do you keep the commercials? Edit them out if you are going to keep the TV shows long term on the WD TV.
-Mod
When I recorded the Super Bowl on my PC in 1080i the .TS file was 30 GB long. Editing out the commercials on files that large is tedious and time consuming.
Dpulley 04-23-09, 08:27 PM Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
WD you guys are awsome, but please stop trying to satisfy all of these crazy request.
I hope you can see that, no one is going to be happy 100%. You guys/gals are working your butts off, but I really don't think that some (not all ) people really appreciate your work.
As soon as someone say "thank you" for your updates, they follow with how they wish you would have done things their way. There are just to many people wanting it their way.
People fail to realize, that you could have improved the product, by just reading all of the posts.
I knew that as soon as you represented yourself, you were really asking for a headache. By showing up in the forum, you have taken on the resposibility of representing the WD brand in these people eyes. So anything you say or do good or bad, people is going to remember the bad.
People getting upset about features that were never promise on the WDTV, is just crazy.
WD you guys/gals have given us a Great, Great, Great product. Thank you.
Funny, I was upset to find out that the WDTV didn't play DV-AVI files, but someone explained why (in prior post) my thought was "ok, well at least WD supplied software to convert my files". I could have returned the player, but the WDTV is just to awsome. So I'm getting off my lazy butt and converting all of my files ( and I have alot of them), I'm not complaining one bit.
I have sooooooooooooooo much respect for WD for responding and wanting to respond to feedback. You guys/gals rock.
I've been happy from "Day 1"
WD you guys are working tooooooo hard.
Big Thanks
moolala 04-23-09, 08:40 PM Heh.
My Samsung won't zoom unless it detects a 480 signal, and to have to manually go into settings everytime I want to zoom something with 4:3 content and black bars on the sides is a bit of a hassle.
that is a little surprising really, because until most recently a lot of HD channels 720p/1080i were often broadcasting 4:3 shows so widescreen TV manufacturers regularly included a stretch and/or panaramic mode specifically for that...and often it was convenient to the point that it would revert back once you changed inputs or powered off.....check it out further and/or let us know model#....and unless you opted out of some remote key functions by using unified remote, I can't believe it isn't accessible from the remote too and you wouldn't have to go into menu on the fly....could be wrong, but just doesn't sound right to me.

Other than this file, everything is working great and I'm loving my WDTV. Great job guys.
I'm not sure if my 2.5" drive spins down or not (as it's very quiet) in the new firmware, but the LED definitely still stays on...
Is it possible to completely cut off the power to 2.5" drives, on poweroff?
I guess the only another minor annoyance, is the fact that when you play a file with DD/DTS, and you have the audio going to your receiver, there's an error message that appears at the bottom right of the screen at the start of playback saying something like "WDTV could not playback supported audio format" (or something to that effect). Even though the receiver can decode surround DD/DTS perfectly.
I do realise that this error comes up because of the WDTV's inability to playback surround DD, unless you downmix to stereo, but this error should not appear if audio output is set to "Digital".

GuyWD reported that the LED staying on is normal. THe WD is keeping the port alive, but it may be spinning down the actual drive. Not sure if they plan on curtting the actual power to the port as its been an "always on" port since the beginning.

Never seen this error with DD or DTS tracks.....I have seen unsupported audio when the actual audio is comming from an unsupported track.
gummitu 04-23-09, 10:13 PM Just had something weird happen, I paused a move (avi) and pressed the eject button. My WDTV rebooted like it was just plugged in (on, then off, then on again and took a minute to find the drive). Anyone seen anything like that or able to recreate?
Tried just powering off the WDTV instead of ejecting the external drives first.. Now my two Buffalo Hard drives refuse to turn back on.
Tried with my laptop, and it appears they are both dead. Activity light flickers for a second, and the drive even spins up, but then spins down and shuts down.
Anyway, I expect everyone's experiences will differ, but consider your self warned. Eject first.

Well another fellow with a Samsung who posts here on the forum was the one who let me in on the trick to going into the WD settings, choosing 480p output, whereby the zoom function on my remote suddenly came alive and began to stretch 4:3 content.
He was the one that told me my Samsung provided no zoom capability on a 720/1080 input, and that I needed to use a 480 input to employ the zoom function.
I can assure you that when I have the WD output set to auto, the zoom function on my Samsung remote does not do anything.
As soon as I went into the WD settings and took the output off auto and forced 480p (thru the HDMI mind you, not composite) the zoom function on my Samsung suddenly worked and I could stretch the content. Not perfectly to my liking, but it does zoom much better than the very rudimentary double zoom enlargement of the WD.
Now I don't watch much TV, except nature shows, documentaries, and a ball game now and again, and I sit about 12 feet away, so I did get a deal on a budget 50 inch 768p. I couldn't justify paying $2-3k just for a TV. I do not have one of the higher end Samsung Plasmas, so perhaps the higher end models have better zoom control.
Of course I never bothered to read the manual on my TV or the WD.

in an effort to give you more definitive explanation/solution, give me your model#...and confirm what resolution your set receives from the WDTV when it is set to AUTO...should be avail if you hit INFO on your TV or some such key on remote...I'm assuming 720p. I'd just be surprised that you wouldn't at least have minimum option of fill/stretch to address 4:3 content...I have yet to see a set that didn't....and without yet knowing your model (or your remote control), maybe the "zoom" key you refer to is to perform an entirely different unrelated function ? anyhow, model# please....and thanks ....sorry, I've read your comment about 480p and zoom more closely so maybe the remote key is the actual one after all, but let us know model anyway so we might check if there is some other dependant setting that could assist...sounds bizarre to me (especially from Samsung)
UPDATE: rather than put you to additional trouble...after googling a bit deeper it seems that what you describe was indeed a limitation (oversight) on some Samsung sets...so I guess you either make do with present workaround unless WD sees fit to expand functionality...or better still, watch it 4:3 because unless you have a nice panaramic type stretch, it just looks ridiculous and will add that much more grain to the picture, trying to fill the screen.

I completely agree.............What gets me on here are the folks that DEMAND certain features with threats of not buying one or acting as if they personally pay the salaries of the WD folks so it should be tailored to they're personal needs........Great work WD!!!! Mine has worked perfectly since the original FW and the pre-releases only make it better, albeit with a few minor bugs, but out of roughly 2tb's worth of media, I've had ONE file that wouldnt play, I think I can live with that........;)

Have yo tested the drives outside of the enclosures? Just a thought that it might be the enclosure and not the actual drive that is dead. Might be a power issue or something similar as well.

Just the fact that you're willing to interact with people on this forum (and other forums) is great. You're not going to satisfy everyone's requests (especially those of some of the people constantly posting here) but great effort trying to respond to certain issues and regularly releasing improved firmware. I've also been happy with my WDTV since day one.
