Alright, the space I'm working with is about a 21x21ft living room that's about as open as can be, with 9ft ceilings. We throw parties fairly often so music is definitely the priority, mostly listening to hip hop and similar dance music. I know I'm not going to get anything phenomenal for this price but I'm looking for a unit with a tight, low bass that can get pretty loud. I'm using a Yamaha HTR-6130 as a receiver (100watts x 5) powering five bose speakers that are about 4-5 years old but work well. Thanks for any help guys, it's greatly appreciated as I've scoured these forums and there isn't much help offered in this price range more recently than 2007 :)

I'd check out Audiogon (http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/fsb.pl?homesubw&1&ctg&st1) for something used.
Other than that, I'd look into the BIC F12 or PA-120 but both are about $200. Maybe worth spending the extra $50 on, otherwise you're better looking used.

I'm not a huge fan of buying used electronics as I haven't had the best experiences. I can't find the PA-120 for less than $229 as I've heard a lot of good things but that's a bit out of the price range at least currently, and the sub I have now is shot so it needs pronto replacing. Any suggestions for a few dollars cheaper?

Amazon has a line of economical Sony subs that might interest you: SA-W2500 10" 100W, SA-W3000 12" 180W, SA-W3800 14" 200W.

Throw a "subwoofer fundraiser" party and charge a small entrance fee. That will give you the increase in budget you need to get a decent sub.

Check these out: http://www.thespeakercompany.com/Subwoofers-C17.aspx
The ASW-8 and ASW-10 are sold out now, but available soon. I have the ASW-10 and it's excellent.

I like the idea of throwing a fundraiser party, but what's a party with no sub hitting? i've been hearing good things about the asw-10 but may 11th is a ways away.. is there anything comparable in the price range? what subs to people like over the asw-10 that don't cost a much, if any, more?

Buy a sub through a company that allows you to try their product out. While you have the "test" sub, throw a fundraiser party. Return the sub, and use the extra cash to get a better sub.
