View Full Version : New guy could use help! on TV
Chuquison 04-23-09, 10:14 AM Well hello My name is Chuqui, I was referred to this site by a few members here that belong to my favorite car site called My350z.com
Here is my dilema, I just purchased a home and I need to get a big tv. I will try to post pix some time later because I am at work or if one of you would send me your email Ill email it to you via my phone and you could post it for me!
The room is my living room and its really big!! I was thinking projector but I like the room to be light and that would hence the viewing.
I wanted some speakers and was told I was screwed since the room is very open and has high ceilings and the surround sound needs some walls to bounce off!! I am no expert this is all new to me, I dont know a difference betweeb plasma, led, and lcd. I have done some reading on here but was not so specific to my needs.
this is what I am looking for and what the use is:
I would like a flat screen that has a nice pic and but no over priced,
must be over 52" no more than 65"
room: living room
use: everything, movies and games, adult owned no kids.
tv from view area: 10-13 feet
seats: about 12 seats all looking at the tv so angle is a big deal.
mounted: wall to for space saving
Price: anything under 2,500
I know there expensive and all but I need this price range so I could also get a sourround sound! I dont want to spend more than 2k on souround sound and I know its not top of the line! any help would be cool!!
again if somone could shoot me their email ill send you the pix of the room, I just cant post because I am at work and wont be out till late tonight.
HarrisonS 04-23-09, 11:05 AM At 10 - 13 feet viweing distance, you will need at least a 65" set to get the best viewing experience. Since you need good performance over a wide angle, you definitely will want to get a plasma if you are buying a flat panel, since LCD picture quality deteriorates off-axis, sometimes dramatically. The only problem is the $2500 price limit. I doubt if you will find a 65" plasma near that price, but you can always look for discounts which can sometimes be substantial. In the end you may have to compromise, i.e., smaller size and/or highter price.
If you will be able to make the room very dark, you might also look into a front projector. These can produce very large pictures, and you can find several models in your price range. The best projection screens can be expensive, however.
Above all, do not buy a rear projection TV (RPTV). They are cheap for the screen size, but the picture quality is very poor. The off-axis performance is terrible, much worse than with an LCD. Also the pictur brightness is very uneven, unless you set very far back. These are almost extinct, and there are only two companies I know of even still make them.

OP: Please ignore the above comment, as it is incorrect. The Samsung LED DLP's have excellent picture quality, off-axis performance is better than most LCD's, and the picture brightness is very even. Better yet...check the prices.
If you want to get something better...your only options are the Kuro or Panasonic plasmas.

If those are your only two choices...go with the Samsung plasma. However, for that price you could potentially get something better for much cheaper.

One of the best displays on the market today...
pdxjazz 04-29-09, 06:35 PM I'm for the best of both worlds. Affordable plasma TV for everyday viewing, and a real home theater for movie nights and events. Here is what I would do with your budget....
Sanyo PLV-1080HD Front Projector
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9053114&type=product&id=1218012518974
Da-lite Model C 92" (diagonal) Matte White Screen

Panasonic TC-50X1 Plasma HDTV
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9219062&type=product&id=1218061797099
Total cost for all 3= $2,700. If that is a bit too high, you could get the smaller Panasonic TC-42X1 and be under budget. However, I would recommend cutting the audio budget by $200 and getting the 50" TV.
HarrisonS 04-30-09, 11:14 AM OP: Please ignore the above comment, as it is incorrect. The Samsung LED DLP's have excellent picture quality, off-axis performance is better than most LCD's, and the picture brightness is very even. Better yet...check the prices..
Wrong! All RPTV's have serious issues with picture brightness uniformity, unless viewed from very far away. Also no RPTV can even match the off-axis performance of any name brand LCD made today. RPTV's are an obsolete technology, and I believe only Samsung and Mitsubishi even still make them. All other manufacturers (eg., Sony, Pioneer, etc.) have long ago stopped making them. The problem is the translucent screen, which requires the light to pass through, while leaving enough scattered light to make a picture. It never worked well, and it never will! You are right; they are cheap, but you get what you pay for.
DLP itself is an excellent technology, however, and anyone who wants to go that route should consider a front projector. Front projectors have none of these problems.
If you want to get something better...your only options are the Kuro or Panasonic plasmas.
Absolutely agreed that these plasmas are the best; in fact I am using a 60" Elite KURO myself! But there are many plasmas and LCD's that will outperform any RPTV!
