Hi All,
I could not find a previous tread on this.
I am transfering my CD collection on a HD to use as a music server.
I am using Itune Software (should I use something else?).
I was wondering what is the best format to use while transfering the music?
MP3 incoder, AAC, AIff, WAV... 320 kbps or less, use of VBR?sample rate:8000 to 48000khz, Smart encoder, filtering below 10hz, etc etc...
Please advise and/or if you know of a good web site to learn about this abit more.
thx,
a

Most people are not happy with the results with iTunes MP3s. Mostly it depends on what formats your media server can handle. FLAC or WAV will be lossless, everything else will be lossy.

Not true, iTunes has Apple Lossless (which I use) and even MS had WMA Losless.;)

If you have the space, I would go with wav files or anything lossless, especially considering the amount of time you will need to put into ripping the CD's in the first place. I ripped over 1500 CD's using wav and it used about 700gb on a 1.5TB drive. I used windows media player 11 to rip...

Yes, harddrives are really cheap right now, and taking the time to rip CDs to one would be a waste if you use a lossy compression format. Later on, you could take that same collection and run in some batch mode to compress it to another drive in whatever format your player will accept if you need to. Not all players will accept the same formats, but most will accept the native one.
