For some strange reason my WDTV has lost the ability to play back audio. I've tested numerous audio and video files to no avail. I had no issues until this point and really am at a loss to explain how this happened. I've tried to remedy the issue by doing the following:

- Performed a software reset (System Reset from GUI) and hardware reset (little button on side of unit)

- Tested audio and video files from numerous USB drives

- Upgraded firmware from released 1.01 to preview 1.02.06

- Numerous ejects and power cycles

Any suggestions?

FIXED!!!

Just an update in case anyone else encounters this problem. I managed to get sound output to return, although the steps I took were somewhat strange. As I mentioned previously, I went so far as to update my WDTV with beta firmware 1.02.06. Doing so had no positive effect on my sound issue. However, I did notice something rather odd in my video settings when I began troubleshooting today. For some reason, my WDTV video output was set to PAL (i'm in the US using an NTSC television.) Even worse, the menu refused to let me change the setting. Switching between HDMI and Composite connections had no effect either.

I decided to continue using my composite connection and perform a software reset of the device. Upon completion, the WDTV properly detected the video settings (Composite NTSC output) and audio returned as well. I promptly ejected the drive, powered down the device, switched over to HDMI, and turned everything back on. Both the video and audio settings remained and audio playback via HDMI had been restored.

Quite an odd way to fix a problem don't you think? Something tells me I could have gotten away with simply switching to composite, resetting the device, and then switching back to HDMI. Hope this proves helpful to others.

How do you have the WD TV connected? Do you have a receiver or are you just using the TV. Are you using HDMI, S/PDIF, or analog L/R for sound?

Did you verify the sound output setting on the WDTV menu is correct for your setup?

I am connecting my wdtv directly to my tv via hdmi only. No other audio cable is in use.

As for the sound question, I tested both settings to no avail.

Mine was randomly doing this. it would have no sound on any of my files and then when i restarted it or sometimes just seemingly randomly it would have it back. then today when i went to play my videos a black screen would come up and nothing happened. it did this with every video and i couldnt fix it. so i returned it and got a new one. so i cant say whats causing it with yours, but if its still in the return period maybe you should look into it. i know if its defective bestbuy will replace it themselves for the duration of the manufactors warranty,

I am certain my WDTV is well beyond the return period so that option is out the window. To be honest, I have a hard time believing my unit is truly defective. I haven't had a single problem with it until now. Any issues I have experienced were due to limitations of the hardware (i.e. DTS decoding, etc.). This is still the best $100 I've ever spent on an electronic item.

ah. well it does have a year warrenty. i hope you can fix it. i like the product so far but it does some strange things. the newer firmware updates made it so certain .mkv files dont play in sync and that was no good so i had to downgrade. i dont understand how an upgrade could actually make certain files that worked fine before not work anymore. why cant they just use the media player classic codec or something? there are so many windows based media players that can just play anything with very little processing power. this thing is obviously pretty powerful to be able to play 1080p files smoothly. but meh i know nothing about coding and stuff so who knows

Bump for fix. See details in OP.

Had sound for awhile but it stopped working. WDTV -> TV. In my case what fixed the problem was unplugging the unit from the wall (powered it down) for like 10 minutes. Maybe its this particular step in your fix that actually fixed the problem.

I actually left the unit unplugged numerous times for extended periods of time. I even went a week with it unplugged and completely unused.

Unplug the power supply solve the problem for me too.
Donīt ask why, but it works fine...

Is this a hardware problem or a software bug?
