Why does my receiver have 1 output for the sub, but my sub has 2 inputs?

Do I use a Y connector? Do I only plug into 1 input?

Also, sometime I hear a HUMMMM coming from the sub even when turned down. I guess this is a short? bad connection?

Thanks

Subs are mono and having two inputs are for legacy or stereo receivers. You only need to connect one input.

The hum may be a ground loop. Try plugging it into the same outlet as your receiver.

Not a stupid question. Sometimes a subwoofer does not have enough gain to get full volume with only one input on the sub used. So, people buy a Y connector to split the signal and use both inputs on the sub. One scenario: the sub output on the receiver has to be turned all the way up to get enough volume. In such a case, it would be better to use the Y connector and turn the volume of the sub output down, even if only 3 db.

I've read many a receiver review where distortion from the sub output goes >10% when turned all the way up. This is not good design but there are/were more than a few receivers like that.

I have also recently read about a sub, (don't remember which one), where the instructions for the sub said to use both inputs.

If you can't get rid of the hum, let us know, there are extensive resources on the subject.

Once again Thanks.

I just moved and hope to set everything up this weekend.
