View Full Version : Is their a video game equivalent to War of the Worlds for subwoofers?
Anthony1 04-24-09, 05:20 PM I've seen War of the Worlds mentioned many different times in the subwoofer forum. It's basically the "tour de force" for putting any subwoofer through it's paces. With video game sound design getting closer and closer to movies as every year goes by, is there a WOTW equivalent for video games?
What I really mean is, if I pay some considerable coin to upgrade my current sub to more of a higher end sub, and I play alot of video games, are there any games where I will actually notice a difference? I know I will notice the difference on alot of movies. I'm just wondering if there are any video games that have low frequencies that higher end subs can really take advantage of? I'm guessing that the sound design people that are working on video games, probably don't think that too many of the people that play their games are going to have subs that can hit 18hz and stuff like that.
The only game that comes to mind as having some pretty impressive bass is Bioshock. Although I seriously doubt it gets very low at all. Uncharted for the PS3 also has some pretty good bass at times, but again, I seriously doubt it goes anywhere as low as some of the best movies for putting your sub through it's paces.

Mass Effect. I am not sure how low it goes, but it literally shakes my walls at low volumes. Beware.
Helmutz88 04-24-09, 05:44 PM The loudest and cleanest sound for any PS3 game i have played is still Unreal Tournament. Resistance Two is also very loud and crisp.
I haven't played COD4 yet, but many AV'ers have mentioned the volume on this game is insane as well...
Toolatecrew 04-24-09, 11:04 PM Star Wars Legacy of the Force. Game itself isn't the createst but tons of low end every time you use the force which is often
Call of duty world at war. The MG42 vibrates my internals when played at the correct volume setting. The 7.1 surround from that game is also phenomenal.
Resistance Fall of Man 2 has a lot of good clean bass. The loudest bass in the game is the sound of your heartbeat when you zoom on the sniper rifle. I can't think of louder bass in any video game I've ever played.
Mrkazador 04-25-09, 02:33 AM Max Payne 2 has some good 20-30hz bass.
Too Human will rock your subwoofer like there is no tomorrow.
I have 2 16Ov.2's in a 13.5 CF ported enclosure, powered by an Elemental Designs LT/1300, and Too Human just destroys the living room with this beast.
Awesome game, with the best LFE that I've ever heard in a video game.
Bioshock at any point where you encounter a Big Daddy you get Big Bass.
pieboyaz 04-25-09, 01:50 PM Gears of War 2 from Epic Games will put your sub through a massive workout.
Anthony1 04-25-09, 02:59 PM Well, it appears there are alot of games that will give your subwoofer a real workout, but I still wonder if there are any that go down real low, like that scene in Kung Fu Panda that everybody talks about.
Add Crackdown for Xbox 360 to the list of games that work the sub in a major way.
lfe man 04-25-09, 08:55 PM Fallout 3 should be winner. Nukes and stuff like that. There is part where you can kill ant queen with some kind of pulse generator devise and when you do that..you will get some nice room massage.:D
Halo 3, when in the multiplayer menu, the background music has some very low bass going on at times. My Ultra is in 20hz mode and I turned it up the other night and the ports were moving a LOT of air, which means the notes are very close to 20hz.
The explosions and some of the guns are pretty impressive in game also.
Lebronze 04-26-09, 08:06 PM Socom Confrontation does not have alot of low bass, but it does have some serious midbass punch when grenades go off. One of the most realistic sounding games available right now.
The grenades in Crysis seem to have a lot of mid-bass punch to them.
Waffles 04-26-09, 08:18 PM I'm going to have to say Uncharted for PS3. You can actually go into the audio settings and switch it to 7.1 and there also is a selection for a large or small center channel.
By the way, one of the shotguns (forgot exactly which) in Counter-Strike: Source has a lot of bass attached to it. :)
