I just got an old computer and installed a TV Tuner card in it. Its hooked up to the router using cable and I can schedule some manual recordings to record HDTV in .tp format. Those files play fine in my mac connected to the router via cable (in VLC player). I can rename the file to .ts and it doesn't make a difference except .ts files are already associated with VLC Player.
Next I tried playing those files in my XP laptop using wireless N network. There is some occasional stuttering but overall they are watchable.
Now I need a way to watch those files on my TV screen and there are so many options that I am baffled and utterly confused. My only other requirement is to watch ripped DVD's (in Video_TS folders) with DD/DTS audio. I already have a soft modded XBox running XBMC but it can't handle the ts/tp files.
1. WDTV does not have wireless streaming, so its easy to write it off
2. D-Link DSM 520 (http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DSM-520-MediaLounge-Wireless-Player/dp/B000A4AVQO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) has wireless and can stream content using uPnP. But you need special application on your computer and I don't know if it can handle ts/tp files. It does have built in wireless and the price seems very reasonable
3. HDX 1000 (http://www.hdx1080.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.ilvm_blue.tpl&product_id=3&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=100094) Wireless is additional and the price is on the high side for a relatively unknown brand. Anyone here has any experience with the device?
4. PCH is very popular but it does not include wireless and is basically has the same problems as above. I don't know if it can handle ts/tp streams and Video_TS folders
5. For the price of a PCH or HDX, I can probably buy a Dell computer, throw in a video card with DVI, and install XBMC and get the ultimate flexibility
6. For more money, buy a Mac Mini or a Vista HTPC
With all these options, any help is appreciated. Its just a side project so I want to spend as little as possible.
