View Full Version : .mts and AVCHD problem (?)
AasmundK 04-25-09, 06:58 AM Hi people.
Yesterday I got my Canon HF10, all worked fine and the filming was great. But when i connected the clips to my computer VLC couldnt open them. Cause it was .mts i think. And when i tried opening them in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, it also didnt work. Do I need a Video Converter? Or a CS4? I think this sucks, cause it could have been way better if I just could open the clips in VLC. Hoping for answers.
donaldk 04-25-09, 09:08 AM I downloaded some deomofiles recently, mts files from the hf11/20, and my old (2 years?) VLC would only play the audio, not the video. Did you try the latest version of VLC, I read it claims to play mts files. As these were just demo files i wanted to see quickly, I downloaded and installed CoreAVC and played the files in WMP 10. Worked fine on a P4 pc.
But when i connected the clips to my computer VLC couldnt open them.
What exactly do you mean by this?
Have you downloaded all your clips to the computer?
What's you PC's hardware/OS? And what VLC's version are you trying?

Good questions...answer them Aasmundk and you might find your problem.
I can double click on .mts files and they play fine in VLC. I copy them to my computer directly from the sdhc card, double click, and they play fine (q9550).
AasmundK 04-26-09, 08:16 AM Hello.
I just downloaded the new VLC 1 month ago and yeah, its a new one? Then i need to download that. I have Windows Vista. They are ON my computer. But answer all my questions. I cannot edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro or nothing? Can I lay it on any websites?

I do not use Adobe Premiere anymore, but it is my understanding that you need Premiere Pro CS4 to work with MTS files.
the latest versions of vlc will definitely play avchd, but you'll need a really fast cpu to see the full framerate.
don't buy any of those cheap video converter programs, they ruin the picture quality.

My Mac Pro (2.8 Ghz, 8-core, 6gb ram) will not even play the damn things full framerate.

assuming its the video card, or you got ripped off.
my (desktop, V64) i7 with 8gb (barely uses 3gb when doing avchd stuff) & ati 4850 runs it.
Probably is the video card. Macs have always been cheap on the video card side. It doesn't really bother me though; I log and transfer them into Final Cut Pro and edit them. Another thing I like is just connecting the camera USB to my PS3 and watching them that way. Of course, they are not edited, but it's nice to preview them like that before I work on them.
seggers 04-29-09, 08:11 AM What type of Vista and at what bit level? Also, did you transfer with Pixela and if so, can that play the files?
have you looked at Nero 8 or 9? That comes with something called ShowTime that can, on my machine at least, open the mts files.
These things have a heavy codec in them, so they take a little grunt power to get going.

For $100 you can get a 4770 or 4850 which should play everything you'd need.
Bring that nice rig up to speed.
It's unfortunate hardware like this is needed for AVCHD. At least software is/has improved.
PorkNBeans73 04-29-09, 02:27 PM Cyberlink Power DVD plays the MTS files way better than VLC, VLC I believe is dependent on the CPU power whereas Cyberlink will use your video card giving much smoother results when playing the video or skipping to portions of the video. I was using VLC prior to using Cyberlink, it was worth paying for Power DVD for that alone. lol

lol = lick orange lollies ! lol. Text speak give me the shts.
Power DVD is a system resource hog, and not worth paying for.
There are many better and free media players,
eg, my current favourite is KMPlayer - free, community project, plays Youtube .flvs, .mtx etc etc, plays broken .ts files, saves .ts live streams to file, loads of filters (inc histogram, rotate, etc, etc) can even set start and stop points on individual files on your play list ! Just hit the tab button during playback to view video file details overlayed on screen - very useful !
My next choice (also free) is GOM player - nice, free, and will play some captured .flvs that KMPlayer won't.
Power dvd would not let me play blu-ray on my laptop 'no high specced enough' but the KMPlayer will.
media players like powerlink and nero, along with codecs like coreavc pro, are video-accelerated, so they make a big difference, when the hardware is marginal.
you don't get that with vlc, or most of the free media players that i've seen... so it's all about cpu power only, getting a faster video card won't help with avchd playback... the software must be able to offload some of the decoding to the graphics processing unit.

Nah.
Tried Km already, as well as about 100 other "free" players. They're okay for freebies.... I guess. But I got tired of finding a player that would do AC3 then another that would do cineform avi... then another to...
Power dvd does it ALL. I now have ONE player for everything. And yes... it plays blu ray... it even decodes dolby true hd.
AasmundK 04-29-09, 08:50 PM Yeah. I am using PowerDVD 8 to view the files now. It's a bit slow, but works. What can I do with the editing if I cant open the files in Premiere Pro cs4? Here are some files who is converted in TMPGenc 4.0 Express.

Sony Vegas 8, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate & Ulead VideoStudio Pro X2 are some other options for AVCHD editing. PowerDVD 9 is what I use, not sure of the difference in speed from 8 but not slow for me at all.
As for the other who made a comment about it being a resource hog, you are viewing a video why would you need any resources for anything else while watching a video?! The free players also are resource hogs except they hog up the CPU & usually hiccup or cause extreme slow downs for people with a slow CPU making the PowerDVD a better option since it is running off the video card.
Rock Flint 05-01-09, 11:04 AM It can handle the AVCHD files without any conversion needed. It can play the files, but primarily it is for editing the files; turning the clips into movies by adding titles, transitions, music, etc.
I tried to post a link to my videos on Motiobox.com but the rules here tell me:

Sorry, perhaps I'll have a chance further down the line to post links.
