I just bought projector for my home theater and we are getting ready to dry wall the room. I been searching to see what wires I need to put in between my receiver (Sony DA6400ES) and projector (Sony VPL-VW80). So far I picked up 15' HDMI Cable from Monoprice.com but was wondering what wire I would needed for RS232 (DB9 M to F?) and Trigger 1 (?) and Trigger 2 (?).

From my search it seems people are recommending to put Cat5e or Cat6 but I don't see how that can be plugged in to RS232, Trigger 1 and Trigger 2 inputs. Could someone explain how this would work over Cat5e or Cat6?

I'm not sure if I'll need the trigger feature (actually don't know what this is for) but since the projector came with ImageDirector Gamma software I was thinking of putting in cable for RS232 to connect to my computer).

Thanks in advance for your help.

You attach an RS232 connector to the end of your CAT5e or 6. The reason for using the CAT5/6 cable is because the inner cables are twisted pair and that helps prevent interference with your signal (I used a non-twisted pair for my IR receiver and had problems with a dirty signal that would have been solved by twisted pair and/or shielded wires).

So you are saying you actually connect the individual wires in the Cat6 to the RS232 connector? Where do you get the RS232 connector? Since I don't need bulk of Cat6 cable I was planning to buy patch cables. Do you see any issues with that if I just cut the ends off?

Thanks.

Seems like it would be easier to just temporarily connect a cable between the proj. and laptop whenever upgrades need to be done. I can't see the need to run a cable permanently underneath a drywalled ceiling. I'm open to explanations.

The RS232 is for automation (controlling the device). I don't have a PJ that takes firmware upgrades so I don't doubt that the port could be used for that as well. However, in the case of control you would want the cable plugged in all the time.

As for how to connect the cable to the adapter I haven't done this but I'm sure there are either crimp type adapters or solder ones. Try your local electronics store to figure out your options (or look online, it's possible even monoprice sells them -- yep, I found this: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10415&cs_id=1041501&p_id=1151&seq=1&format=2 do a search on DB9 and you'll find anything you need).

There is no issue in cutting a patch cable. And I think you can buy adapters to do what you need if you are uncomfortable with wiring the cable yourself. If you go that route then you don't have to cut the cable. As far as where to get them just do a google search, they are all over the place.
