View Full Version : Please turn off your freaking mics!
Shin CZ 04-25-09, 07:36 PM 99% of EVERYONE who talks in a game sounds like ridiculous radio noise. It doesn't help anyone, we don't wanna hear your stupid music mixed in with garbled noise, nor do we want to hear your fake chipmunk voice.
Sony needs to desperately fix this issue by allowing us to mute ALL voices prior to even starting a game. I'm fed up with having to manually mute the entire room prior to a match.
Stupid bluetooth.
wilimino 04-25-09, 07:54 PM i agree with you, the other day i heard some one call his wife or girfriend all kind of names while playing killzone, i was even able to hear his cell phone ring...
KingShorty 04-25-09, 09:03 PM There are mute options on Killzone 2, which I have been using regularly and has made my gaming experience that much more fun.

i agree with this part. there should be a way to mute everybody w/o a ton of trouble. COD: WAW it was possible to just shut everybody off. all games need to support this. i haven't really played enough online games with a mic or without a mic to have it really bother me, but i could see how people could get annoying. there was one match in killzone i was in where i was constantly hearing somebody else on my teams music and it wasn't good music.
number1laing 04-25-09, 10:31 PM If you want to mute everyone, can't you just take off the headset?
allisgreen 04-25-09, 10:32 PM I didn't spend $1000+ on speakers to hear garbled voices and disrespect in general. Also I find people place the mic directly on their lips.
NitroAddiction 04-25-09, 11:35 PM Crappy music, static, ignorant arses, thats the reason why I dont use a mic.I myself respect my fellow gamers by staying off the mic because I take care of my 5 month old son at night when I play and I know, nobody wants to hear a crabby baby screaming in the backround
DarrellG 04-25-09, 11:53 PM I hate open mics. SOCOM got it right, even though you can still hear someone with proximity chat, but that's awesome too.

headcase151 04-26-09, 07:46 AM Don`t slam me.I have 2-ps3`s and 1-360..My 12 year old daughter is very good at COD. MW.We can`t play together because of the cursing, and name calling.Sony should give you the choice to block people in the PS3`s menu.Don`t leave it up to the game developers.Microsoft got it right. You can block everone,or just people not on your friends list.I`ve had a PS3 since launch, and it seems Sony just don`t get it.I don`t expect Sony to protect our kids from this stuff.Just give us the options to.
I never connect my headset if I aint playing with some real friends. It has no point for me. Other than that, I hate open mic and I also hate it when the MTV G4m3r scrubs hate it when a game doesn't support open mic. So immature.
... Just give us the options to.
COD isn't a game for 12 year olds...
Funny, I always hear that a big problem with the PSN online community is that Sony doesn't include a headset with every console like MS does, and that somehow really hurts online play.

Why would that be a problem? I bet it was just a stick the MS Templars could pick up and beat the PS3 users with, shouldn't be to worried about it then. I rather have onboard WiFi and HDD than a headset. I hate headsets anyway, rather use a remote mic.
As I see it, there isn't much need for a headset / mic when you are a grown-up man and meet new online people or something. Unless you play with some friends, it's totally not needed at all. Kids like it to scream and be the headset-DJ, I bet their parrents can shelve out an extra $20 for a headset when they buy a PS3 for their spoiled brat. I also rather not had a headset with my PS3, only to find out Sony would release a PS Eye, or that new HD Headset for it.

Never said I was worried, just that I found it funny.

Touché. And, IMO, it's the same as to why Sony doesn't include a HDMI cable with the PS3. I mean, what type of cable should they add then; 2m, 3m, 5m lenght? You pay for something you don't need, it's better to purchase one you want (for, let's be honest, a nickle and a dime). Same as with a headset; maybe you don't need one, or you want a mic or a higher spec headset. I, for one, could care less for it: bought one and hardly use it.
Malcolm_B 04-26-09, 02:09 PM But there are some gems in there: "Mom, I just got online!" GARBLE GARBLE "Okay! (softer) Sh*t!" CLICK.

The HDMI cable thing makes complete sense to me; the majority of TV owners don't have HD sets. They included the cable that would work with the majority of TV owners. Simple as that.
Krzykrl 04-26-09, 02:41 PM why don't you post this on a site with users you are directing this to? i dont think the people browsing this forum are the type to have the music blaring or talking sh!t.
like others have posted. just have the audio output go through your headset and put the headset down. problem solved.
KingShorty 04-26-09, 03:52 PM LOL... some people just like to complain simply because they can.
Like me right now, I wish some people would use spell-check. Some of the posts in this thread are simply atrocious because of the lack of the ability to spell properly.
Deviating the discussion to spelling mistakes was a good tactic in the 90s...
OH SNAP! He sure showed you Shorty. Dont you feel stupid now, moran? Knowing how totaly 90s your complaining about spelling is? People mispell all the time now, and it's totaly ok! Language evolves, evolve with it.

LOL... awesome one Tez. I agree, language does evolve which can be clearly heard over the mics when playing a game like Killzone 2. However, in this thread, language devolves.
I was just trying to show that people will complain about anything. What is being achieved on AVS by creating a thread about what is being said over the mics is beyond me. Are we the ones being complained about? I thought AVS was to share information, apparently now its a place to create meaningless threads just to vent.
I also find it very funny when someone says that they have many friends that they play online with, then say that they have no reason to use a mic.
Carry on...

That's your problem. You think this thread is meaningless.
What you fail to realize is this thread will be read by ~.00001% of Playstation 3 owners. If even 10% of those people take the OP's advice and "turns off their freaking mic," just think of how much better your gaming experience will be!
most people using mics dont know how to set it up properly, or have CRAPPY mics. the first headset i tried sounded like crap no matter what i did, but the official sony headset, works a lot better, and i dont hear as much garbled noise as i did before.

But that's just the thing, the AVS community pretty much knows how to configure their mics.
Instead of creating a thread that is titled "please turn off your freaking mics" maybe it should have been "what are the best settings for a mic"?
I know I was helped by the AVS community when playing Burnout Paradise as to what the most optimal settings were. I also know that when I've played other games and there is someone with their mic that is "loud" or "playing music" I simply ask if they could turn it down or try to help them adjust their settings. If that doesn't work, then there's always the "mute" option.
I think having created a thread with such a title would entice people to keep their mics on rather than turn them off. When do people respond in kind with such an "offensive" reaction?
Notsobright 04-26-09, 10:31 PM true, in COD, theres a voice volume bar but no mute option
for the whole room/game overall. it would be nice.

Great thread here! My family and I play a lot of Battlefield and Rock band2 and I do own an official sony PS3 bluetooth but I dont use it that much and when my kids or I play online without it we can still here a lot of people talking trash through our sound system. Is there a feature on the PS3 that can give me an option to stop all the voices coming through when playing online?

I just turn my mic on, set it to mute, & set it down....that way the mic chatter is directed to the headset instead of the speakers.
Funny, I always hear that a big problem with the PSN online community is that Sony doesn't include a headset with every console like MS does, and that somehow really hurts online play.
Having a standard headset means that almost everyone uses the same headset. And the headset that Microsoft uses doesn't pick up room noise like a lot of bluetooth headsets seem to. And it means that even though a lot of games have open mics, you don't hear constant noise from them. They are muted if nobody is talking.
Sony can't know what crappy bluetooth mic the user has, so they can't tailor their system to cut out the noise. That "noise" that they are trying to cut out might be the guy talking to his team. So it seems that there is a lot more background noise let through on the PS3. :(
shagino 04-27-09, 09:52 AM Sony can't know what crappy bluetooth mic the
user has, so they can't tailor their system to cut out the noise.
I played RE5 with a friend for coop and didn't find that there was tons of background noise, while sensitivity could be adjusted, it's not the problem. Even if Sony could detect it with a standard mic, I don't think that much of it would be reduced.
Also, muting the bluetooth just isn't convenient. On the standard Xbox headset, I can switch mute on without taking my hands off of the controller. I can't do that on the PS3.
Coop games pretty much require that this is necessary. L4D isn't nearly as good without a headset. I'm afraid for FP. Communication is going to be necessary but there's gonna be a whole lot of garbage also.
number1laing 04-27-09, 10:08 AM The official PS3 headset that just came out last Fall really should've been out at launch if not packed in with each system. Of course waiting around is part of being a PS3 owner.
Yes packing it in the box would've been expensive for Sony but this is not a cheap system and never has been.

I would have been happy with a cheap wired one. I don't need it to be wireless. I don't need a BT headset for my phone either.
funsocaltiger 04-27-09, 10:56 AM +1 to the OP.
This is single handedly the most annoying thing about playing online MP. Sony really just needs to have a way to TOTALLY disable voice chat for all games through the firmware. The possibility is there in the XMB. You "should" be able to select "None" for the voice chat audio hardware.
COD4 is the worse example of what a failed voice chat implementation looks like. Even with the voice chat volume turned ALL the way down, people playing their rap music in the background still overpower everything. Coming out of my sound system, it sounds like total ****. Not to mention that all the popping and crackling can damage your sound system if the volume is turned up.
I had to go and get a headset JUST for COD4 so that I can plug it in and prevent the sounds from coming out of my speakers. And BTW, even 10 ft away (I leave my headset by the TV) I can still hear the yelling and music coming out of my headset. Once again, set to the lowest volume.
JeffMarg 04-27-09, 01:29 PM I just turn my mic on, set it to mute, & set it down....that way the mic chatter is directed to the headset instead of the speakers.
Couldn't you also go into the Settings for Accessory Devices, Audio, and set the Output to "do not use" (as opposed to System Default or the headset)?
never mind - I just tried it and the 'do not use' option is only for the input device...
funsocaltiger 04-27-09, 01:41 PM Couldn't you also go into the Settings for Accessory Devices, Audio, and set the Output to "do not use" (as opposed to System Default or the headset)?
No.
That is exactly the complaint I (we) have. The PS3 firmware will not allow you to entirely disable the chat device last I checked.
Have you tried directing it to a bluetooth device that isn't turned on? I had two devices synced, and when it was directed to the one I wasn't using mic chatter did not come through the speakers.
fcorona76 04-27-09, 01:49 PM COD isn't a game for 12 year olds...

As a 32 year old man I'd expect to be able to mass-mute players who disrepectful, ignorant, or immature....usually it's all of the above.

Hmmm I thought if it couldn't connect it would go back to the default (speakers). I might have to try this.
eyeofmourning 04-27-09, 02:00 PM i bought a cheapo usb mic just for this reason. i hardly ever use it to talk, it is just an easy way to mute all the other idiots.

Weird. I thought that it worked. I'll have to give it a go some time later.
And to think I finally bothered to figure out if my Motorola BlueTooth headset would work with the PS3 and got it setup over the weekend. Now this thread and I'll be hesitant to actually use it! :D
Playing KillZone, I've found most of the chatter amusing more than anything, although sometime it's useful depending on who's doing the chattering in your squad.

Yeah, team chatter has usually been decent, it's the proximity from the enemy that gets really annoying. That's why I mute the opposition once the round starts.
maximuslcd 04-27-09, 03:13 PM On the other hand I've heard alot of people doing really weird stuff in the background thanks to those BT headsets. Even to the point of someone straining really hard in the other room to take a dump, I ask what the hell is that? Oh its my mom she's....errrrrr wait , stop I dont wanna hear anymore.
I agree that there is way to much room noise, mindless banter and coughing, sneezing etc that goes on..I usually try to find the culprit and mute em.
My 12 yr old son plays W@W, I dont let him have a headset but you can still here some weird'os coming thru the TV speakers though

Yes, if a mic isn't on, it will play through the sound system or TV. Turn on the mic, mute it and put it to the side, then the sound goes to the mic, but being placed on a table somewhere, you do not hear it at all, and being muted, they don't hear you.
I use a USB mic, and if I am playing alone, I will just mute it and play. My wife and kids don't need to hear the immature racists (and neither do I for that matter).

I don't have a Mic and never planed to get one, but I guess the only way to mute people is like you said, get one and mute it. Unless Sony send us a firmware update allowing you to mute everyone.
Tired to hear Neo Nazis or KKK wannabes using the "N" word all the time through my speakers.
pdiss88 04-28-09, 12:21 PM I just turn my mic on, set it to mute, & set it down....that way the mic chatter is directed to the headset instead of the speakers.
+1, that's what I do also. It's the best resolution available to stop annoying mic chatter, as I just can't take the overlap of people rapping, playing music, talking on the phone, or yelling at someone else in the room while I'm trying to listen to the game's sounds. The only time I actually use my mic is if I'm playing with friends and I want to hear what they're saying/have them hear what I'm saying.
Vince2909 04-28-09, 01:14 PM This used to be my number irritant with MW, the GD voice chat garbage. The lobby is one thing, but I finally figured it out for ingame and embarassingly it took me too long to figure it out.
Here's how:
When you enter the map, that ~12 second countdown before the game starts, press enter, then X through each player. You'll get a little speaker icon with a circle and an X...no more incessant noise from anyone. But like I said, when you go back to the lobby you're right back with full volume until the game starts again. But then you can also use the mute on your audio system or TV.
funsocaltiger 04-28-09, 01:43 PM Turn down the headset volume.
Edit: The voice chat on COD4 is so ridiculously loud I can hear my headset from 10 ft away with the in-game voice chat volume set to the lowest setting and also the volume on the headset itself to the lowest setting.

It's pure common sense. And if only more people actually had it. Just sad. I'm surprised most people didn't think to turn on a mic and then just mute it. It really is a clever idea to beat the system. It's unfortunate that you have to have a headset to do it in the first place though.

V35_Pilot 04-29-09, 10:17 AM I won't allow my son to talk to all the crazies out there.
Unfortunately that is not the only way for some classless piece of garbage to get to your son. One of my younger boys received and read an unsolicited profanity-laced message from some hormone-fueled 15-18 year old angry at a game outcome before I had a chance to intercede. The message was all about mouths and male genitalia.
Naturally I blew a stack but then learned of and used the official PS3 report form, FWIW. (yes, I am aware that sub-accounts can be restricted to prevent inbound msgs, but I had originally concluded it would have been too limiting)
As far as unwanted headset chatter, don't most games have individual player or game-wide mute options? The few I have played so far all have offered that and I mistakenly assumed it was SOP for these game developers. That, to me, seems to be the first layer of common sense invoked.

That would have been common sense, yes.
Most games have individual muting but not muting for everyone or a way to turn off chat entirely. COD4 is particularly annoying because mute will be taken off once you are back in the lobby so you have to do it for everyone for every game. It's a lot easier to just plug in a mic and leave it on the floor.
cruze808 04-29-09, 01:08 PM My 10 year old son plays COD4 and 5. I am able to turn off all chat/mic features...it's in the parental controls you set up for all sub accounts. If you want to turn it off...turn it off in the sub account. It's just that easy.
Good one Fuse Im gonna look into that for my boys. The only riff raff they are are allowed to associate with is me. There already too familiar with the Zulu crew.:o

Yeah my son hears enough garbage coming out of my mouth or those mouths of my fellow TWWer's or NOMer's...last thing he needs is more of that from strangers. At least I can "try" to control what he hears. It's only going to keep honest people honest.
