Hello,
i've searched the net for an answer on copying/archiving my old video files to a computer/server, with a view to watch them on a PS3.
What i've done far is to successfully transfer videos (both in dv1 and dv2) to my computer, from my Sony DCR-PC10. On the computer, both file types play fine.
I've also copied some files in DVD (mpg) format at %90 quality, and they play fine also.
All of these files are then copied onto a media server (Fujitsu-Siemens AMS150), to be played via Lan from a PS3. The PS3 successfully plays almost all media that i 've put onto this server.
Now, i've tried to play these same files from my PS3, and the only one that played is the mpg file. When i try to play the others i only get a corrupted data message.
So, does anyone know what is the best archiving format, program, process to use to transfer these files onto a digital storage media (is best quality), so that i can play them from the PS3?
Thanks for any help.

It does not look like PS3 can play DV avi files directly. So you need to convert them to high quality MPEG2 (DVD), DivX/Xvid, or H.264/MPEG4 files first. Most video editors would allow you to do at least one of the options; probably even those free software which comes with your camcorder.

You can look for guides and utilities at videohelp.com.

Thanks for this. Can you tell me which of your mentioned options would have the best original quality? I'm mainly doing this for archiving purposes, so would want to stay as close to the original quality as possible.
thanks again.

I want to do exactly the same. I don't want to convert 100's of hours of DV video to another format mainly due to the time it would take and the possible loss of quality . Unless Sony come up with a DV decoder for the PS3 I am hoping that using the media streamer TVersity will allow me to copy all my DV tapes natively on to a large hard drive (obviously not using FAT32 as the files are enormous) , and then use TVersity on my PC to convert on the fly/on demand to a high quality PS3 suitable format as part of TVersity uPnP media server. This way I store the DV in its original format but can still access it via the PC directly or via the PS3.

I Will be trying this option very soon. If Sony are reading this , can we have a DV decoder on the PS3 ! :)
