I am thinking about picking up FF VII, VIII, IX, and anthology. Does anyone know if these games can be played from start to finish on the newer 80GB PS3s?

Might want to wait on FFVII, as it is available in Japan as a PS Store download and may be coming to the US.

I've heard that before :)

Sony's site says they work fine, with the following exception in Anthology:

During gameplay of Final Fantasy V, after Reina and Galuf have joined the user's party, when the user presses the Triangle button to display the Menu Screen, and selects Save, the title hangs.

To answer your question, all ps3's play playstation 1 games as far as I know.

So you should be set to play without any troubles!

They all play the discs, but the emulation isn't always perfect. That's why there is the site I linked above, to check for problems.

We posted at the same time, so I didn't originally see the link.

Very handy, thanks!

I've played through I, IV, and I'm playing through VII at the moment. I didn't have any problems with I.

IV was fine, though there were a couple of minor issues. Accessing the memory cards is painfully slow - something I don't get because the file saves are only 8kb IIRC. It literally takes 15 to 20 seconds to write a single save file. That's insane. Another problem I experienced in IV was massive slowdown when walking if a party member is poisoned - you know, there's an Mode7 SNES effect where the background becomes digitized/pixelated/scrambled, then scaled, then goes back to normal, with a sound effect. That happens with every step. On the ps3, it's excruciatingly slow. The last problem is flashing of tiles in the background. Its distracting, but only a minor annoyance. The silver lining here though that some of the hidden pathways are now visible because they "flash".

I'm about 15 hours into VII now, and I've noticed minor screen painting issues at the end of battles. Specifically, the menu is painted over the battleground background and flickers for a maybe a half-second.

(original 80 gig model) I put about 15-20 hrs into ff 7 a couple months ago. Turned it on recently to continue & it wont let me choose the continue, only new game is available.

The save file is still in its original location, so i have no idea why i cant continue. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the last firmware update?

I tried removing the save file from the ps3 via usb then putting it back to no avail.

Kinda sucks because now i'm leary of even starting again....ff 7 is the kind of game that you definitely need access to save files.

Try pressing circle to confirm, instead of x.

FFVII was released early enough into the PS1's lifecycle that the X->confirm / O->cancel standard was not implemented.

yeh i'm pressing circle. the continue option is greyed out, it just makes an obnoxious (you cant do that) sound when i try to select it. new game selection with the circle button works just fine.

Sorry - I didn't consider my response before I posted.

Are you sure that the memory card assigned to slot1/slot2?

thanks t-ray.

i assigned slot 1 & it works. i have no idea how it became unassigned...didnt realize this was something that needed to be done more than once.

everything works great now. i thought i was going to have to wait for a north american psn release just to beat this game again.

I think a firmware update may have unassigned virtual memory cards. I'll check it out on my system, I haven't touched previous-gen games in a while.
