View Full Version : Jacksonville, Florida Issues
annodomini1960 04-28-09, 11:55 PM Live in rural area west of Jacksonville, Florida. No surrounding buildings or tall structures. Per antennaweb.org, all pertinent stations are 104 or 105 degrees, and 39.2 to 40.2 miles distant. Strong signal and nice picture for red stations 4.1 (WJXT), 47.1 (WTEV), 59.1 (WJEB), 30.1 (WAWS), and blue station 17.1 (WCWJ).
Never have been able to pick up light green stations 12.1 (WTLV) or 25.1 (WJXX), although I get their analog signals. Was able to get strong signal and nice picture on 7.1 (WJCT) until they recently discontinued their analog signal, after which I can no longer receive 7.1
After studying online discussions, thought maybe my old and fairly cheap antenna was to blame, so bought Winegard HD-7694P. Installed and aimed it, with no net effect. Still cannot receive 7.1, 12.1, or 25.1.
Will an amplifier help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
bozey45 04-29-09, 02:33 PM on checking quickly at the post transition in June your channel 7 now is using channel 38 for digital and they will change to channel 7 on June 12 for digital. Your channel 25 will change to channel 10 for digital on June 12 so you might want to wait and see how things look then. Channel 12 will not change their channel assignment that day. With a clear path and no obstructions between you and the transmitter towers that antenna should work fine. i read a review of it by a TV station that is testing various antennas and the one you have scored very high. You could try an amp, the CM7777 is a good one, use it myself. I get some overload but I'm into DX and I'll put up with the overload until these local analogs go on the 12th. So you have a couple of channels that will use VHF channels 7 and 10 (TLV will use channel 13 as now I believe). Digital signals no matter what the experts say are finicky. I guess you're using RG-6 coax for the lead in. You could try to get higher with the antenna and see if that helps, add another 5 ft. mast and see what happens before you buy an amp. the amp should be a mast amp by the way to amplify the signal before it gets inside. I would even rescan and see what happens.
I would even rescan and see what happens.
That's the money quote! Re-scanning is the first thing to do after changing a major component such as the antenna. Otherwise, it will appear that any changes made to the receiving system have had no effect whatsoever.
Your TV or box won't be able to tune those channels until it has successfully scanned them in, although some models have the capability to add channels by manually tuning their actual channel assignment, i.e., 7-1 for 7, 13-1 for 12 and 10-1 for 25.
annodomini1960 04-29-09, 08:26 PM First thing I did was rescan, after connecting the new antenna, and after aiming it for the strongest signal on the channels I receive (they're all next to each other). Rescanning does not help. Wish it were that easy.
nicoge21 04-29-09, 09:37 PM are these trouble stations at low power right now?
annodomini1960 04-29-09, 11:45 PM Supposedly 12 and 25 are, but 7 shouldn't be, and I can't get it, either.
nicoge21 04-29-09, 11:51 PM The problem might not be your antenna if that's the case, their current signal might not be strong enough to reach your location.
Maybe you should wait it out until after the transition.
bozey45 04-30-09, 07:28 AM i would still add 5 or maybe even 10 ft. to the antenna and see what happens; wouldn't hurt, you might have to add guy wires depending on your situation but I would sure try that or get maybe a 30 ft. telescoping mast and try at different heights.
gatorman 04-30-09, 09:07 AM 12 and 25 are running low power until June 12th. Something happened to the 7.1 signal when they switched over. For me, with no previous problems, now I can receive it on the tv sets OTA, but not through satellite receivers.
12 and 25 are also being broadcast from a new antenna. It is more directional than the old one and some coverages have been reduced. I believe it is more an easterly orientation. Go to 12's website where they have posted some information.
You might also try the Jax thread in the HD locals forum here. There are some knowledgeable people there. Piggie might be able to help. He is also west of here.
Good luck.
