View Full Version : WD TV HD Media Player...can it upscale?
93akkord 04-29-09, 09:33 AM My question here is, will this player be able to upscale most content. Whether it be up to 720p or even 1080i for that matter. Kinda like the PS3 does. I love the PS3 player and what it does, but it doesn't support many formats.
What I'm looking to watch mostly are Divx and Xvid files.
Any help would be apprciated :D

Yes it upscales to whatever you like. If your display is 768 lines I'd pick 720P. If your display is 1080 lines I'd pick 1080P or 1080I if it can't handle 1080P.

Ok great...now that I know that it upscales I will definitly be picking it up.
Quick question, from what you said. It sounds like I will have to manually setup the upscaling on this unit....that true?

Yes. WD TV doesn't have autodetect frame rate yet. So you need to force the resolution you want or leave it in Auto ( mostly it will stay in 1080p 60Hz in a full HD TV )

That's not to bad, seems easy enough to figure out.
How is the quality on the upscale? Comparable to the PS3?

You can manually pick or leave as auto. auto for me chooses 720P at 60Hz, which is what my Plasma can handle so I just leave it.

If you have a good computer you can stream most formats to your PS3 using a program called PS3 media server. The program was designed specifically for PS3 and converts on the fly to a format that the PS3 can play. I stream my AVI and flac files and play them thru the PS3. The program is also free. I have since moved my WD player to my bedroom since I started using the program. Give it a try, you got nothing to lose.

Ya, tversity. I tried that one too about 4 months ago. I gave up on streaming but I recently got a new computer and decided to give it another try. I have been very happy with this new program. It plays my HD content flawlessly.
anthonyl 04-29-09, 03:24 PM Wow, various options to choose from. Are there any advantages of tversity over ps3mediaserver ?

I think PS3 server works better for the PS3 then tversity, but I have not tried tversities latest release. I have been pleased with PS3 server so I have not tried.
