my receiver and the xbox 360 do not like my 1.3 cables very well. i find myself restarting the console or the receiver quite often in order to reach 5.1.

Did you try www.monoprice.com?

*edit* NVM, don't think they have any. Hrm, ebay?

Monoprice has plenty of "1.3a" and unspecified revision cables. Not sure if those would work, or if the cable really is the problem in this case (or if instead it's a handshaking issue which changing cables won't resolve).

What cable are you using now, the official Microsoft one?

Just try another cable and if the problem still persists, it's not the cable.

Is there even a difference between 1.3 and 1.2 cables? I can't imagine the version rating is the issue here.

There's a difference, but the new standards are supposed to be fully backwards-compatible with old standards. It's basically a bandwidth issue in any case, I think—1.3 can carry more than 1.2.

I would wager it's something funky with your receiver's handshake. I'm using monoprice 1.3 cables from the 360 to my TV with no issues. I agree that if you switch cables and have the same problem, it's not the cables.

I suspect its nothing to do with the cables. TONS of people have issues with HDMI and 5.1 when running a single HDMI cable to reciver. Myself included.

If possible I'd (and I did) run an optical cable from the 360 to your reciver and forget about buying different HDMI cables.

to further clarify, the cables are the same. No pinout differences.

1.3 cables are just certified for the 1.3 level bandwidth. That's all. Many 1.0-1.2 cables would work fine with 1.3, they're just not certified at 1.3 data rates.
