Not too shabby. For comparison, the entire market is 5.3 billion and Blu-ray is $230 million. That puts digital distribution at about 9% of the overall market, and growing.

Digital distribution further lifted the total, coming in with an estimated consumer spend of $487 million, up 19% from the year-ago quarter. This is the first time that digital sales have factored into the DEG’s quarterly numbers report.

That's a pretty good number. Do you know how it was calculated?

Per the DEG:

The DEG compiles quarterly sales data for various products within the home entertainment category, including Blu-ray, DVD and HDTV. The industry association compiles its data based on input from member companies, retailers and industry association tracking sources.

From what they say, it really is hard to tell where they are getting the numbers. Digital distribution may just be sites like iTunes and Amazon.com that sell directly to consumers. Based on the overall topic (consumer spend), I doubt it includes places like Netflix, Crackle and YouTube where the content is either ad or subscription based.

The home entertainment sector has remained remarkably resilient, particularly with first quarter growth of Blu-ray up 105 percent to $230 million and digital distribution up 19 percent to $487 million for the period.

From looking at the charts, it is interesting to see that both DVD software and hardware are at their lowest levels since 2003.

Wow, that's more than I would have guessed. Would like to see exactly how they got that number, but it bodes well for digital distribution.
