View Full Version : Xbox live internet speed?
I just recently dropped my internet provider i was getting 1.5 down, and 1.5 up for the price of 50 dollars. Our local cable and telephone companies currently offer speeds of 10-20 mbps down, and 1 Up. So I went with there high end one since there high end internet speed package was also 50 dollars and it gets 15 down, and 1 up.
So I did some new speed tests and I was getting anywhere from 12-19 download speed, and 1 megabyte up. That is around 13 times better then my old connection.
I should mention despite my old connection having uploads up to 1 mb, i only ever got around 512, half of what im getting now for upload.
Yet on xbox live I still get mostly 3 green bars, shouldn't i be getting 4 more often? I was getting 3 green bars with my older and much weaker isp.
Here are my tests, download is usually not quite that high, its just because its very early morning where I live. Typically its around 13-18 down during the day.

mcmushx15 04-30-09, 08:03 AM is your xbox wireless?
maximuslcd 04-30-09, 08:15 AM alot of times like playing cod4 for instance everyone runs off the host server so if you and he have a bad or weak conn you will have less grenn bars. Doesnt mean you dont have a good interent speed.
Mike LS 04-30-09, 09:03 AM up and down speeds are only a part of what makes a "good" internet connection. There are tons of other variables that will play a part in how Live rates your connection.
ogbuehi 04-30-09, 11:10 AM Maybe your ping rate is to high. That usually is the more important factor when determining how well your gaming on live will be.

Yes, assuming the connection is adequate from a speed's perspective, latency will be the critical factor in determining what level of connection you have

a ping of 19 is high??!
It shows my ping as 19 as the guy above mentioned, its right below my speeds.

No, that's not slow. But keep in mind that the Live servers arent located in Calgary, so that ping rate isnt indicative of how you'll connect to Microsoft.
I did try las vegas a minute ago.

ultracat 04-30-09, 01:31 PM I don't know the answer, but it isn't you. I have a 100Mbps fibre connection directly connected to my 360 (no router or anything). I have insane speeds. I still get 3/4 bars most of the time, even when just playing a private match with a few friends who are geographically close to me.
Short answer, you've done everything you can on your end. Your connection is great. It's out of your hands dude.
edit: and with that kind of speed, you'd think I would be host at least MOST of the time in games. I'm hardly ever host in games. I have this insanely fast connection and most of the time I get stuck in laggy rooms where Live has given the host to some dude on a 5Mbps DSL line in backwater Alabama.
Ok thanks, good to hear its not an issue with my connection.
I just figured when your on an isp who offers 1.5 down, and 1 up, which you get half of, but get 3 bars (I was literally getting 1 down and 512 up on my old isp with 3 bars and latency was around 150) and you switch to a much better connection it would go up a bar, but its still 3 usually, sometimes 4.
As long as its not a network issue for me.

The problem is it may not be on your end but its still a problem!
As ultracat was saying it's really up to the host how good your bars and your experince are going to be.

Your upload speed is a huge factor.
Hmm well unfortunately in canada, or that I know of, uploads above 1 or 1.5 are about max. On speed test it still showed my upload to be higher then the isp average.
Also your ping was 16 at 50 miles (or minutes whatever that mi means), mine was 19 at 150, shouldnt the ping/latency tell the story.
My last ping was actually 9 to calgary @ 150 minutes/miles whatever the distance thing says.
Also im using a wired connection.
Happy to report I have gotten 4 bars a couple times in COD since this thread started.
It seems if the room is not to full I can get 4 bars. When its full I only get 3, not sure why, but others can still 4 bars when the rooms full.

I suspect its becuase mos xbox games are peer-to-peer.
So if the host's connection starts bogging down then your going to bog down,
But really with the kind of bandwidth you have you reallyy , not that you controll, it should be hosting everytime.
danieloneil01 05-03-09, 12:10 PM OP, it isn't you most likely. Gaming even on the PC is always iffy. People will game on basic dsl while someone else is surfing the net. I don't care what anyone says. A crappy connection from someone else in a game (not hosting) can cause the game to play like sh%t. Not to mention distance from other players is huge.
jblank74 05-04-09, 11:27 AM How are you guys checking your XBL internet speeds? I didn't know there was a way to check the connection speed from within the 360 itself.
There is a small indicator when playing COD that shows your internet connection strength. It's to the right of your name in the player list before each match.
Slordak 05-08-09, 04:11 PM It's not strictly speaking a measure of connection speed or connection "strength".
It's a measurement of latency, which is most simply the time it takes to get a reply back from a transmission to a given host. However, this will vary highly depending on where the host is located and whether the host's own connection is overloaded. Thus, having a poor latency reading when connected to a given host does not necessarily mean that your connection is "good" or "bad". Similarly, in some games there are peer to peer data exchanges, such that a few players with high latency connections can cause "lag" for everyone.

I have friend who lives in backwater NC and they had 5Mbps DSL connection. I was surprised to see that they actually had that connection. Unlike cable which often advertises one speed, and then you find out you rarely have that speed. Besides, the speed has nothing to do with it. It's having very little latency that makes a difference.
