I picked up a 33" HDMI to DVI cable sort of spur of the moment so could hook my 360 up to my office monito. thus I don't have to play xbox in the dark during these summer days (360's hooked up to projector)
I wishing now I'd gone for VGA since then I switch between computer and xbox at the touch of a button instead of having to turn off computer, unplug computers DVI cable and plug in the 360's one.
Anyways.... Anyone tried converting HDMI>DIV>VGA?
From googling it appears it not's possible, as when you use a DVI to VGA conveter on the computer the DVI cable is already carrying an analog signal. Where as with HDMI to DVI its purely digital.
Also an update my monitor, depsite being new and 24", only has VGA/D-sub RGB and DVI

I doubt that will work, your monitor is looking for a analog signal in the VGA input, not a digital one. The only way I can see it working is to use a converter box, but you're better off just getting an HDMI cable for like $10.

As you surmised, it's not possible (in this fashion). DVI can technically contain both analog and digital portions representations of data (via DVI-I). However, if one is converting HDMI to DVI with an adapter, only the digital pins will actually be live. In contrast, VGA uses the analog pins, so this won't work.

Why not just convert it from HDMI directly to VGA?
Edit: Or I mean to say is transcode it. Or just use the VGA out on the computer and convert HDMI to DVI for the other port on the projector.

My computer has no inputs. And I'm pyshicaly unplugging cables on my 360 and switching when I use my computer monitor.
I ran a VGA cable, I just have to pick up the 360 VGA adapter in town.

I think he meant to use your computer into the vga input of the monitor or projector instead of the DVI, so you're essential swapping places.
That's probably the easiest, get a dvi to vga adapter that comes with every video card out there. Then use a vga monitor cable for the pc and stick with your hdmi to dvi on the xbox.

Thats a great idea! But unfortantely I'm using a special video card that outputs a special connection to a double DVI cable then one DVI to each screen.
I've tried a DVI to VGA but I can't get native resolutions on both screens
1,920*1,200 on screen 1 and
2,048*1,152 on screen 2
I get stuck with two screens at 1,600*1,200 and looking horrible.
