With the 360 connected to a new Mitsu 1080p dlp TV via hdmi, the games work and play fine but when my son tries to play downloaded video files from his video library or HD dvds from his HD DVD drive, we get an HDCP error message.

Message reads: Secure HDCP link not found

So it does not seem to be a handshake issue of the normal kind b/c the games play fine. The videos play fine via the component cables. We swapped hdmi cables, sequenced the powering on of the equipment in different order etc... all to no avail.

Ideas?

Sounds like HDCP problem, as to solution I don't have one :(

here are some related links that describe the same problem:

the most common "fix": unplug the display device for 30-60 seconds (perhaps to reset the hdcp link).

other apparent fixes:
*unplug and replug the hdmi cable after the "secure hdcp link not found" message is displayed
* upgrade the hdmi cable
* switch the 360's resolution settings back and forth (turn off any upconversion being done by the 360)
* turn off all parental settings and restricted content settings in the 360's family settings
* upgrade the motherboard of the display device

No luck.

1. powering off the display did not work
2. unplugging the hdmi cable at various stages did nothing
3. various changes to output resolution did nothing
4. all content controls were already turned off

I will try to upgrade to a brand new 1.3 certifed hdmi cable over the next few days.

If you use the console for anything other than games, this renders the hdmi output useless.

So it does not seem to be a handshake issue of the normal kind b/c the games play fine.

Games don't require HDCP at all. Only video, especially copy-protected video, e.g. DVD and HD DVD.

So, it is a typical handshake issue. Maybe you shoud check owners' thread for your TV to see if it is a known issue or a solution.

It does not appear to be a problem specific to the Mitsu. I got the same error message with the 360 console connected to to a new Samsung 1080p lcd and to my JVC 1080p DILA projector-- all of which work fine with BluRay (no handshake issues with other devices). It seems to be an issue coming from the 360 console.

If anyone is experiencing similar problems, see:

None of which helped in my situation, still getting the "Secure hdcp link not found" is still generated whenever playing video from the download library or the HD DVD drive.
