I began to notice some odd issues with my video card a few weeks ago. I noticed rainbow pixels in windows and tearing during a spinning 3D logo.

I thought at first it was an issue with my card so I sent it back to the manufacturer (BFG) for replacement. I got the new card and am still having issues. Here is a picture of the rainbow pixels that appear:

a video of the tearing effect:

I did not notice these issues in a linux or dos environment. It seems to only appear when some form of video acceleration is needed.

My PC specs:

Asus P4P800 Deluxe
2GB DDR2 3200 RAM
BFG 6800GT OC AGP (182.50 drivers)
MyHD-130 (1.66.1 u)
Windows MCE

I wrote to BFG last night and they responded by saying sometimes bad RAM can do that, but I don't see how.

It certainly looks like bad video ram to me. I suppose bad system ram could cause similar issues depending on how the shared memory stuff works.

Is the card overheating? Is it in a poorly cooled chassis? Had that same problem years ago. Ram on card was overheating.

Someone actually responded to my Youtube video (not sure if they are from here) but they said that they had issues with the Nvidia drivers which caused the card to somehow get over clocked when he did not do it. I am going to roll back my drivers to something much older to see how it goes.

Thanks for making a video of the problem. Love to learn new stuff. All I can say is maybe time for upgrade. AGP is outdated. I recently purchased a new computer and went from Pentium 4 to Dual core for less then $350, and that was at Best Buy. I now have PCI express ports and video runs ten times better. Just a thought.

I am upgrading actually but selling this PC, and want to make sure it's working before I do. I wouldn't feel right selling a defective machine.

Does it have an integrated video card on your mother board? If so just take out your defective AGP card. You probably won't get a whole lot for your old computer anyway since you can get brand new with Vista installed for under $350 anyway.

No it does not have integrated video, and I got more than $350. ;)

Does anyone have suggestions for what driver to roll back to on older video cards?

So after lengthy test sessions including getting two new cards from BFG I still have the same issues. Last night I got fed up and reformatted and reinstalled Windows. I installed everything except the drivers for my MyHD-130 card and so far I am not getting the issues I was before. Trying to determine what changed that would cause the software or card to do this. I've been using the card for years without issue.

If you're using XP, I think the drivers are cached. And even if you try and install an older driver, the OS will ignore your directions and use the latest one.

That caused me a lot of irritation with an audio card once. Deleting the driver from the cache finally allowed me to install the older, working driver.

So far I haven't installed any drivers. I was running the newest version prior to the reformat.

It could very well be the AGP slot that's causing this then. Try to clean the slot with a blower. Rolling back your drivers is also a very logical troubleshooting step. Best of luck.
