Anyone know where you have to preorder Infamous to get the demo on May 7th. When I call Gamestop about it (I hate gamestop but I want the gigablades power they're giving out with preorder) they give me some rigamarole about coming in an preordering when they don't even have the demo codes.

I saw someone mention Best Buy but they didn't say if they got a code or not or just a promise. Gamestop seems to be big on the promises, short on the results for this release. Amazon is cheaper but all they have is a Home costume (Like I care.) So anybody have any ideas on this?

Also...does Gamestop have any way of forcing you to return your preorder bonus if you return the game?

Thanks guys,

Screw gamecrazy.

They gladly took my pre-order money for a PS3 then got a whopping 0 on d-day.

No way they couldn't have known that to be the case and shame on them for keeping it hush hush from their customers.

Damn, that's harsh. Well there's no game crazy here in NL anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of limiting demo access to people who have already preordered. Seems to defeat the purpose of a demo.

I agree unless it is done the way they are doing it. The demo for preorders will go live May 7th. The demo for everyone else will go live May 22nd I believe. They did it similar for Killzone 2.

That's debatable. I have no idea how this game will play, I know I'm eager to play it. For one to say that it's going to suck even before it comes out is really disturbing.

Then again, it's only your opinion and we all know the saying about "opinions"

You've played it?

I'll throw my opinion into this easily. Prototype looks like a generic beat-em-up aimed towards kids.

This guy obviously has chosen his side in the console war :P. Obviously the games have almost the exact same style, so it will come down to the details of gameplay and storyline. To tell you the truth I want to like Infamous better (I've chosen my side too) but Prototype looks a bit better. Plus the storyline reminds me of a modern Planescape: Torment. I'm sure they'll both be very good games.

If that's the case, that's not too bad. I understand the business reasons behind the early demo being reserved for preorders, but it is still counterintuitive.

From what I've seen and read, here's the core difference:

inFamous = Crackdown-style open-world superhero action-platformer
Prototype = Spiderman 2-style open-world superhero action beat-em-up

They could easily both be good, if not great. Even if they look similar on the surface, they both look like they play totally differently.

Plus the storyline reminds me of a modern Planescape: Torment.I wouldn't hold your breath. It will be a long time before we see a game with that high caliber of writing again. :(

Agreed, I expect them both to be very good. You're right, the writing in Prototype has a near 0 chance of being on the level of Planescape: Torment. I gotta pick that game up again someday. I still haven't got all the way through. Its a great game, but really overwelming.

But, yeah, I definitely want to play through that one again. Used disc copies of Planescape go for ~$60, and prices keep going up each year on that one. Real collectible. I spotted it in a GS bin a few years back for $20, took it up to the counter, and they "couldn't find" the discs. Bastards. Never forgave them for that.

Shoulda jumped over the counter and said "LET ME TAKE A LOOK!" lol, what a bunch of jerks. I don't think I spent 60 for it...but I did buy it a good 5 or 6 years ago...

Rumors are going around that someone received a demo code from Gamestop. Every GS i've called have only the gigawhatchamacalitblades codes.

Best Buy and Gamecrazy are the only locations confirmed to be giving the demo codes. The two Gamecrazys in my area have not received their demo vouchers yet but expect them by the 7th. I'm checking with Best Buy on the way to work today. I'll post what I find out.

And to the Prototype drone hating on inFamous: Hmm Radical Entertainment vs. Sucker Punch? I'll go with Sucker Punch. Any developer that uses the word "pwn" in their description of the protagonist, fails.

Confirmed. Bestbuy has the preorder boxes. You pickup up the box, shake it, and you'll feeling the demo voucher rattlin' inside. Cost: $5.00 +tax.

I have a $25 GS gift card (thanks e-rewards for the 4th time) so I'll probably cancel the BB preorder and get the GS gigablades.

Console war? I'm a die hard PlayStation fanboy. I have a 360 here that hasn't been turned on since Gears of War 2. My OPINION, is just that Infamous looks really cheesy especially compared to Prototype. Everything that I've seen from Prototype looks good ... the different attacks, the taking over of bodies, framing people, gliding, it looks all good. But anyway, we'll see later today how Infamous plays.

It looks and plays well. An excellent (and very long) demo. You get a taste of good guy and bad guy over 4 missions. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised on how well it does play (from restraining, melee, sniping, to bringing down full-on lightning bolts. Not to mention effortless platforming/freerunning). I'm sold.

This was a real jerk off move on Sony and Sucker Punch's part. It has me seriously considering putting off playing this game until I can get it used at Gamestop as a way of voicing my displeasure in this crap.

You get to play the demo. You don't. You do. You don't.

WTF.

I bought a Playstation 3. I supported Sony when everyone else was buying Xbox 360s and saying the PS3 was worthless. I was planning to buy the game one day one. But now I feel like I'm being treated like a second class citizen by people who want my business. And that just pisses me off.

If I do end up buying this new its gonna be because there's nothing else available that I want to play right now. I'm almost finished with Ico and I was thinking about playing Mega Man 9 but I don't think that'll last me until used copies of this start showing up.

It's no different from most "beta" nonsense. Little Big Planet and Fat Princess being the biggest examples. Yes, it's obnoxious. Yes, it drives everyone crazy. But it definitely stirs up interest in key titles. No one's actually being "deprived" of anything, and yet we all feel like we're missing something nonetheless. Brilliant marketing.

At least somebody does. I know I'm a bit over the top at times but I just hate to see people getting screwed for no reason like this. Sony should be bending over backwords to make its customers happy this gen, consider how far behind they are. Instead we get this crap.

The game will sell demo or no demo. #1. It's good. #2. Uncharted 2 Beta

Although I don't agree with the tactics, I play along to get the demo. If i'm going to shell out $60 bones anyway for this game, I might as well preorder from the outlet giving the demo 2 weeks early. Here's my "stick it to the man" plan:

Cancel BB preorder. Use same 5 bones to preorder @ Gamestop to get the exclusive in-game power. Move inFamous to the top of my Gamefly queue. Cancel GS preorder. Wait 1 or 2 days after release for the rental to arrive. Pay the "keep it price" of $47 bones. GG.

The only problem is my willpower. Can I wait 1-2 days for gamefly to save 15 bucks?

Sorry I don't just bow to my corporate masters like some people.Uh, you know that Sony, MS, Nintendo, and all the pubs are all "corporate masters," right? You're not "sticking it to the man" by getting a demo early.

I know I'm a bit over the top at times but I just hate to see people getting screwed for no reason like this.I have a hard time seeing how this is anyting like "getting screwed for no reason." That's like saying MS is "screwing" silver membership folks by not letting them get access to demos until the following week. Or like saying that Sony is "screwing" over people who don't subscribe to Qore for not letting them get access to certain betas and early demos. Seriously. It's not a big deal.

You're already "playing the corporate game" by playing video games in the first place. There's no way to escape it or to subvert it. Either you play their game or you don't play at all. Simple.

Exactly they are a corporation. Which means they care about MONEY. If pre-orders gets them the money that's what they will do. They aren't going to bow down to the average consumer in hopes of winning your heart. They will always try to do what they think is best for their business.

Have a nice day.

WELL, kinda true. Stores are already receiving X number of copies on launch. Those will be sold even if only half of them are preordered.....So its not like preording is making them more money in a sense. They are just trying to make people commit to buy before they play, which I never would do with any game.

So this demo is an enticement for people to again force the issue of preorder. Its totally a great marketing tactic and is a great incentive to pre-order thats all....

wow.. it seems people will look for any excuse to play the victim. I honestly see nothing wrong with pre-order incentives. After all if you're going to commit to buy something you should get more coincideration then the guy who waits till 2 weeks after it's out.

I preordered at gs and I don't care if I don't get early access to the demo because it doesn't take 2 weeks for me to form an opinion on a friggin demo!!

Well kinda true. In inFamous' case, the preorder tactics are for one reason: to lure buyers into a specific chain of stores. If you want the demo early, BB and Gamecrazy will be taking your money. If you want a super duper in-game power, GS gets the money. I hate Best Buy but my ass was in there for this. And as long as they are getting people in the door, this preorder "bait" is working.

Sony only cares if the game sells. Doesn't matter where. My guess on why they pulled the demo off the HK store was to appease Best Buy and Gamecrazy. Who would have preordered at BB or GC if it was available on the PSN store? Not many I would guess.

I wouldn't be surprised if this surpassed KZ2 in sales with all the preorder hype and uncharted 2 beta "carrot". Now only if Sony would put that Super Powers trailer on primetime tv.

They are just trying to make people commit to buy before they play, which I never would do with any game.Well, actually, not true. Pre-orders have a very specific purpose. Games (much like movies) sell best in the first few weeks of release. Doing pre-orders helps beef up those initial sales. Worse, pre-order sales are often used to determine how well a game will sell over its entire lifetime. So if a game doesn't do well in pre-sales, it won't get stocked in the future, it won't be seen by customers after those first few weeks, and it's doomed to sales oblivion.

There are exceptions (like Valkyria Chronicles), but those are few and far between. The situation's getting worse, which is why the pre-order gimmicks are getting more intense. Now places like Walmart are keeping stock for even shorter periods of time (2 weeks), so if a game doesn't sell well immediately, then its chances are even worse. Which, in turn, makes pre-order sales even more important. And so on. It's becoming a nasty cycle for developers and consumers. Factor in rising development costs and the recession, and you've got an unsustainably escalating situation.

...and this is why so many developers and consumers are loving the downloadable arena. Avoids that ******** altogether.

Buy the game used at Gamestop. Beat it in under 7 days. Return it. Payed the game without playing the corporate game. Epic Victory!

I was actually thinking if based on pre-orders Sony could estimate sales and decide whether it's worth it to have a commercial.

It makes a lot of sense, since inFAMOUS can't have a sequel based on the ending. The guys on the IGN podcast were asked a question if inFamous could have DLC and one of them hinted that it wouldn't go with Cole's story.

Well that probably does not matter. In Fallout you die at the end but the story still went on. No reason they can't be clever about it.

Spoiler tags for Fallout 1? Seriously?I guess he's just paranoid. Just to make sure we're all on the same page, Fallout 3 actually ends like this:
Good save, Tez. I almost fell for it and I've played through both Fallout 1 and 3. Fallout 3 isn't that old, so let's keep using the ol' spoiler tags for the ending, eh Cynn? ;)

The game needs to have BETTER AA in the final copy, that is the only thing that bothered me also the framerate needs to be a bit better during chaotic times.

I don't care reduce the effects if you have to because I rather have a smooth playing game with good AA, then a game having framerate issues and looking like its trying to do too much.

oh btw, I think that activision game looks to be a more mature/gory version
of the same exact game(or looks like it), if you get this game you have to get that game.

I get a lower base price, no tax, and free release date delivery with my Prime account...yet I have to go to gamestop to play early? Ghey.

Except for the part where almost every aspect of Prototype looks half-assed and inFamous is from Sucker Punch, who we know pours their heart into every title they make. I'll take my chances with the game by the good developer.

Got my pre-order from Best Buy, love the demo. If you liked Crackdown and Assassin's Creed you should love it. Very open world, nice level of detail, tons of ambient stuff going on.

Climbing feels a lot like Crackdown but the combat is far more engaging once you dig in. The XP and unlock system seems interesting, and the karma system should be a challenge as trying to be good is tough since civilians tend to stand slack jawed while you lob lightning bolts and shock grenades, hitting them and steering you toward evil. I got better at this with more play, but if you want to go fast you are likely going evil.

I'm glad I got a look at it, great game. Stop crying about pre-orders and just go get it.

The Prototype video that was released last week looks really cool. But Activision games tend to lower in price pretty fast. You should see the game for $40 one month after release. So get inFamous and enjoy it and then get Prototype one and half month later. :)

False dichotomy. Radical doesn't have to be half-assed for Sucker Punch to be great. Radical has produced plenty of merely average games, it's true...but they've also produced "Simpsons: Hit and Run" and "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction", both of which were great examples of the sandbox genre. Prototype was always presented as being an evolution of the gameplay from "Hulk:UD".

They are two different games with two entirely different focuses. They have a lot of similarities, but it's like arguing that CoD has to be terrible because Killzone is good. Both being good aren't mutually exclusive. I'm more interested in Infamous, personally, but that doesn't mean I expect Prototype to be epic fail.

Prototype's going to have to something special for me to take notice at this point. Each new preview video released has given me fewer reasons to pay attention. So far, the videos make it look like exactly what you describe: a licensed title without a license. And, yes, that's an opinion entirely independent of my thoughts on inFamous. ;)
