View Full Version : Nidec Fan = thumbs up! Quiet 360 finally!
BillKen 05-01-09, 02:16 PM Finally got my Xbox 360 quieted down.
After $40ish wasted dollars on a Talismoon Whisper Fan (louder than my stock DC Brushless) - I found a supplier for the supposedly quieter Nidec Fan. I figured for $12.99 it was worth a shot - WHAT a difference! You can barely hear the Nidec while the DS Brushless had a annoying whine to them. Since the new dashboard update - playing games installed to the HD really made my Elite's fan noise annoying since everything else was quiet w/o the DVD spinning.
So anyone looking to quiet down their 360 fans and don't mind axing their warranty - the Nidecs worked great for me.
Mw182006 05-01-09, 03:11 PM You guys must have robot ears, or I just have my surround sound way too loud, because I can't hear a thing from my xbox when I'm playing.
modiGTI 05-01-09, 03:58 PM On my current Elite, it's the drive that is noisy but if I install the game on the HD, I don't hear a peep.

I'd have to 2nd that, it only during quite moments in COD (not very many) that I hear my 360, or quite arcade games like worms.

And how do I come in contact with this supplier? I have an old 2006 Pro that I wouldn't mind opening up.

That's where I got my Nidec at.
Aren't the Nidec fans quieter because they just flat out do not turn on, unless the console gets really hot?
Since the install on drive came out I don't even here my 360 anymore
Thanks OP, my Elite is damn noisy not even playing games, same goes with my first 360 and my buddies. Those claiming they can't here are being a bit of apologist I'm sure, two 80mm fans are never going to be quite, especially the low end ones they put in the 360.

The low end ones can sometimes end up being as good as the high end ones.
When you buy parts in bulk you specify a range where quality is acceptable the wider the range the cheaper the part. That doesn't mean that a super high quality part couldn't end up being sent with the bundle (rarely but its still possible) .
I've been looking into fan replacements. My 360 is fairly quiet...to a point.
Just being turned on the fans have a whine to them. So even though they aren't whirring like jet engine, they are annoying. It's like having a slight headache you don't realize hurts you, unless you stop for a moment and notice.
mbeiler 05-06-09, 12:17 PM I'm seriously considering doing this. The fans on my 360 are so loud that I've stopped using it and get all multiplat games for the ps3 now (even though my friends are on xbox live)
The thing is, I have a year left on the MS warranty and am pretty sure the damn thing is going to RRoD on me again if I change out the fans
mbeiler 06-03-09, 12:29 PM Bill, I was wondering if you could give us an update on the Nidec fan. After a months use, is it still as quiet as when you first put it in?
With all the e3 announcments, I'm actually thinking of keeping it around for a bit longer. However the fan needs to be replaced before I end up chucking it out the window

Why not just sell it and buy a newer one? My Jasper arcade is way quieter than any of my other 360's, I have one of each type at most times kicking around the house...
mbeiler 06-03-09, 10:22 PM Who would by a used 360? and for how much. Would probably end up costing around $100 to do the swap. Fan costs $12. Neither methods are guaranteed to work, but one is defiantly cheaper.
257Tony 06-04-09, 09:10 PM I sell used pro systems for around $175 with the HDD. SO yeah it would cost you over $100, but you would get the newest mobo, and they are much much better than the older models. Very quiet, and so far looking to be 1000x more reliable.
