View Full Version : More demoscene goodness ala Linger In Shadows coming to PSN: .deTuned
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/05/01/introducing-detuned/
This one is called .deTuned and is made by .theprodukkt, who has been involved in the demoscene for quite a while now. They have done some interesting pieces, which includes .kkrieger, an FPS that is all done with one 96k file.
.deTuned is a bit of an odd beast that offers an abstract and surreal interactive experience like nothing else. It is not exactly a game or an art piece like Linger in Shadows. It allows you to create your own visual to accompany your favorite music tracks on the XMB, and using the SIXAXIS™ Wireless Controller, you will be able to manipulate the given scene by interacting with and modifying a man and his world. It even lets you tweak your music as you play with it.

funsocaltiger 05-01-09, 03:34 PM Wait... so does it actually integrate with the music player and work as a background visualization? Or is it treated as a separate app/game.
Probably a separate app, it'd be fantastic if they just integrated it with the player. The XMB visualizations have a strict memory cap though (it's why you can see where the star pattern starts repeating on the Earth one), it looks like this would be far above such a limitation.
Slacker George 08-14-09, 07:31 AM Teaser site is up on SCEJ. Maybe some more news coming soon.

Dashboard 08-14-09, 08:08 AM WOOAAAH trippy... can't wait to try it out! :D
It could be an awesome new music player. The one we have right now are kinda.... boring. I'm tired of watching the earth, I feel like I'm a part-time astronaut :p
Conspiracy* 08-18-09, 12:50 AM lol that second pic makes me think of "I wanna be...your sledgehammer" for some reason.
This is coming to the US PSN today for $2.99
TornadoTJ 10-15-09, 11:17 AM It would have been cool to integrate some support for the Eye. That way anyone walking by could interact without having to pick up a controller. Some of that functionality is in Mesmerize, but you can't use your own music.
Dashboard 10-15-09, 12:23 PM Might get this for another visual player for music :)

Really? For only 3 bucks, I'm going to have to try this out.

Mikazaru 10-15-09, 10:06 PM .detuned is really weird... but in a cool sort of way. My favorite is the Elephant Dance. Gonna have to check out Linger In The Shadows now.
TornadoTJ 10-16-09, 10:16 AM So far Linger was far better. I can't get the hang of this thing and the clicking when you move it is irritating.

You can turn off the sound effects.
I thought it was worth the $3. Heck, I'll continue to buy these little nuggets simply to support the idea of them, and to support weirdness in general.
TornadoTJ 10-16-09, 10:22 AM I admit I didn't spend long with it. I'll pick it up again this weekend and see if I can get it to do more than just run around the chair. Somehow I picked up 4 or 5 trophies just mashing buttons. LOL
I played around with this for about 15 or 20 minutes last night. By just randomly pressing all the buttons as fast as I could I managed to execute/unlock every combo (lists them all in the menu screen) and obtain 80% of the trophies! LOL
It wasn't quite as cool as I hoped it would be, but if you're tripping balls it would definitely freak you out! I think I would have to be in a different state of mind to actually spend an extended amout of time playing around with it. But for 3 bucks, I'm not going to complain.
*enjoyed it more than Linger...didn't care for that too much and I tend to appreciate quirky, artsy stuff.
TedSeattle 10-16-09, 03:02 PM I thought Linger was much cooler, but I don't regret spending $3 on this; I, too, like that Sony is offering demoscenes on PSN.
I think it was misleading of the Playstation Blog to say that it lets you create a visual to accompany your favorite music; that suggested that it was a visualization app. It's actually more of a gizmo that lets you choose what music is playing while you're fiddling with it.
TornadoTJ 10-16-09, 03:11 PM HA! I agree! that's funny!
I thought the music itself would cause some change in the environment as well, but that's not the case.

Same here. Was disappointed the environment didn't reflect the music, just based on what buttons you push.
Did anyone else notice the quality of the music not being very good? The bass seemed to be fuzzy, but when I just listen my music normally it is crystal clear.

You do realize that the button presses affect the music, too, right?

Yes, I know the different combos affect the music, but when none of it was being used I still noticed the audio quality not sounding as good as it usually does.
deathindustrial 10-17-09, 05:56 PM Meh. Considering how amazing some demoscene stuff has been done in under 64K I expect more from a 56MB download!
What Sony should be doing is supporting paid plugins for their MP3 player since they themselves have obviously lost interest in it (and fix the -4 to +4 volume limitation please). .deTuned should be a visualization plugin and not a standalone app. Pretty underwhelmed by this, especially considering how Sony is misrepresenting the music player aspect of it.
Not worth 3 bucks. A $3 theme would at least get some use where as this app will be ignored / deleted after about 5 to 10 minutes max.
Cheers
TornadoTJ 10-19-09, 11:33 AM $mitty, you've probably altered the music using the buttons. One of the modes is "fuzzy".
I played around with it for about 15 more minutes and decided I probably won't go back to it. Linger was much better IMHO.
ppshooky 10-19-09, 12:16 PM It was decent. But, I was disappointed I couldn't string effects together like it did in the intro demo.
bdwright77 10-19-09, 01:12 PM I liked linger better, but I think that's because I made an uneducated purchase. I pretty much thought this was a standalone application for a music visualizer, but since the environment experiences no change when playing your own music, it completely failed me in that regard.
Still an interesting experience.
TornadoTJ 10-19-09, 04:03 PM I agree completely with both the comments above.
So in conclusion...LAME.
Wish Sony would release another visualizer. Would even like the option to change the color of the background themed one from something other than purple. That'd be better than nothing!
TornadoTJ 10-20-09, 11:40 AM Aquatopia with custom tracks :)
I was pretty disappointed in it, but it was only $3 and I'm okay with supporting more demoscene work on the PS3.

My thought on the $3.... I played with it for an hour or so until I got bored of it.... maybe it was my choice of music (Clutch), but it was just too tough to get good mixtures of effect/movement with it. At first, my thought was 'eh, was a waste'. Then I thought about go-karts. $6 gets you like 10 minutes on a go-kart... to get an hour of fun on a go-kart is like $40, so it was well worth it, in that respect. I kept getting mad that I couldn't mix-n-match the effects. I really wanted the Elephant head with the ghost effects, THAT would have been sweet. Also, I'd have liked to be able to do a little more in the control aspects. Linger in the Shadows was incredible in what you could do with such a truly linear 'story', and in hearing this was another demoscene work, I was expecting another such level of tweakage.
All in all, I give it thumbs up, but will probably only fire it up once or twice a year to tinker when I'm not in a level state of mind.
