What is general public consensus on which HDD to use in a PS3???

There's no replacement for displacement ;).
The best HDD for PS3 is SSD but cost a lot of money.
You can get a normal 2.5" 5,2000rpm on any brand will work
You can get a 7,200rpm with a little bit of speed but more heat.
It's up to you.

Not sure what's current max capacity right now. any drive will be good. I've read net stories about all major brands being the one to avoid. My objective would be get the most for the least as long as you recognize the company name of the HDD.

Yeah, you're probably right. I think I was remembering someone here comparing a SSD he used vs the 5200rpm SATA drive for data access; but again, I'm not an expert by an means.

Add me to the list of those running the 320GB Western Digital Scorpio. I bought a refurbished Dell Mini 1010 netbook for $245+tax a couple of weeks ago. It was supposed to have a 160GB drive. For some reason, it came with the 320GB Scorpio Blue in it. Last night I swapped my 60GB PS3 drive into the Dell and I have a 320GB PS3 now. Both devices are working fine after the surgery, and the Dell runs better after a clean install of XP without all the pre-loaded junk. I split it into 35GB and a 25GB partitions and am thinking I might try Ubuntu out.

And who needs 320GB in a netbook in the first place? This drive will be much better utilized in the PS3.

The best HDD for the PS3 would be the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 gig. It's the biggest and fastest drive at the moment.
